It has a different feel from Doom Eternal or Doom 2016, but I actually consider that to be a good thing. A FPS veteran of a certain age, I don't feel I have to rely solely on fast-twitch or extreme weapon swapping to get the job done, and the platforming elements don't require absolute perfection to pull off. Whenever I go down swinging, it is because I didn't quite pull it off, not because the game seems unfairly biased against me succeeding.

The shield mechanic is deeply ingrained into this game - you won't make it through without using it. It becomes second nature pretty quickly and adds a whole other level to playing Doom. In this case, defense is sometimes the best offense, and it doesn't take long for it to become a very lethal weapon all its own. As with any modern Doom game, there is a resource limit to the shield - the number times you can parry damage is finite, so you'll be running and gunning in nearly equal measure. The shield rush game play is a literal blast.

The only potential downside to the Dark Ages is the lack of any sort of multi-player action. Does that make me feel the game isn't worth it? No, but it does break with tradition to not have any version of it available. I didn't quite get into the Doom Eternal version of multi-player, and I can see how that lack of uptake across the player base may have contributed to the absence of death match play here. With the hundreds of online choices these days, attracting enough players to keep multi-player alive on any sort of continual basis is next to impossible. Choosing to focus only on a single player campaign experience is actually a good decision, I think.

If you're like me and have played Doom since its inception, it's my opinion you'll enjoy this latest installment as well.

For anyone even remotely interested in tower defense games, this one has the most options and upgrades and variety of any I've played so far. The first night I played it I was up until 6am and I was still wanting to keep playing even then. The graphics are retro but totally functional and keep the focus on the game play, where it should be. Each 'tower' or trap has levels as well as upgrades that can be piled on the higher the level gets. There are skill trees that can alter your resources or traps to allow you to dial in the game to fit your style, plus treasure items to boost or change the stats of the traps, very similar to what you'd find in Diablo. Unlike some tower defense games, there is no attempt at a story here - just straight up enemy annihilating fun.

Old school at its best. A game you can play with just the keypad, with any graphics card created in the last 10 years. The best part is the humor to go along with the turn based fireballs and hack 'n slash. Laugh along with the Great Old One as he saves the day.
