I play FTL when I want to relax and focus on nothing else. The art stye and setting are perfectly fitting for your space quest. You can play it at your own pace, and on easy mode is usually doesn't get too stressful. But if you let it FTL has the ability to overwhelm you and make you panic, and that is when the game is at its best. If you are unprepared you'll come across no-win senarios where you need to deal with a fire running through the ship, crew members suffocating, systems needing repair, missiles and drones bombarding your ship, and no way to comprehend what to do next. And that is before you play with the free expansion that allows you so many more ways to suffer. But with practice and time you'll be able to understand how to overcome the miriad ways your opponents make you suffer and turn it back on them. Burn them, shoot them, control them, invade them, incapacitate them, kill them one by one. Or offer peace and move on to more pressing matters like saving the galaxy from an all-consuming miasma of rebels.

As a PS, I really wish FTL had a multiplayer mode that allowed you to play against other people.

This game is a whole lot of fun but it is at its core a prequel. All of the significant plot points and character developments rely on the knowledge of Ys I & II, which you can buy on Steam. If you aren't the type to play 2D games then I would highly recommend Ys: The Oath in Felghana instead of Origin. It plays very similarly but has a pretty engaging closed story and is an absolute blast.

If you have played Ys I & II then this is the best game in the series. Origin lets you play through the turmoil that seeds the eventual corruption of Ys. You watch how characters are drawn by fate to play certain roles and see the motifs of the later games form. You get three playable characters with their own stories that justify multiple playthroughs, and they greatly expand on the lore surrounding the Fact line. A strong theme throughout the narrative is whether characters are doomed by fate and their lineage, with an underlying theme of elitism and gender discrimination that get resolved by the end of the story. They could have taken more risks but it certainly is engaging and satisfying.

The gameplay is fun and fastpaced, with interesting boss battles and a cool story that benefits greatly from knowing what comes before. Pick it up and have fun!

These games renewed my love for 2D RPGs, a genre I haven't touched since SNES. The soundtracks are definately a standout which you can hear in the trailer. All combat is in real time and remarkably fun. It works on a bump system so depending on what angle and direction you hit the enemy determines a sucessful hit. The story is pretty simple and the hero is a bland, enthusiastic young kid but the gameplay easily supports the game's few negatives. And after you're done the achievements are a lot of fun to go back and solve.

Ys I: The leveling system is so perfect in the first game. Every level makes you feel more powerful and that you've achieved something. The maps are serpentine but not too frustrating. The areas feel distinct and the art is just beautiful. The boss battles are really quite wonderful and the final boss was easily the hardest part of the game for me. It involved so much genuine strategy and forethought that finishing the game felt so darn satisfying.

Ys II: Very similar to the first game in music, art, maps, story, and combat but with the introduction of magic. One spell basically dresses you in a kangaroo onesie so you can talk to enemies. Every enemy. I honestly felt bad for killing hoardes of enemies that just wanted to go home but were there because I was their badguy. The biggest negative would have to be the final boss. They were a joke and the easiest boss in the game due to the items they give you beforehand. The third boss gets a special mention because they may be the most horrifying thing I have ever seen in 16-bit. Ys II is just more of a good thing and is immensely fun.

For me indie games offer a way to tell immersive and emotionally engaging stories in ways that are inaccessible in any other medium. I can easily say that Papers, Please is the most emotionally heart-wrenching game I have ever played. By far. I would go so far as to say that this is a perfect game. The gameplay itself is stressful and difficult, which may sound off-putting but that really is the point. You deal with the stress and paranoia because the game gives you reasons to do so. Throughout the game you make seriously difficult decisions which will always have consequences. In my first playthrough I took something that I knew I shouldn't, but I was scared that if I didn't my son would starve. That wasn't a fabricated choice the game threw at me. It was the result of my gameplay affecting the story in a way that I had to make these difficult decisions. This is perhaps the only game I've played where your decisions truly affect the story. And not just for 'good' or 'bad' endings. Everything is grey and unclear.

Papers, Please is an masterpiece with one of the most immersive stories I've ever played. This is all an attempt to say that I like it very much.

This is an excellent game that is rewarding and challenging and infinitely replayable. The levels are randomly generated and the gameplay is always pretty fair. The art is beautiful and everything works like it should. Just watch a youtube video if you're not sure. But I can't recommend this game more highly. It is my favorite cave-themed indie game. Below is an attempt to capture the gameplay-generated storytelling that will be unique to every run you make.

Journal Entry for the Daily Challenge, dated October 25:
What began as an omen for failure left me with an arrow head and the fangs of a bat embedded into my flesh before even reaching the second floor of the mines. I hastily bought everything I could from the short-tempered shopkeep that awaited my arrival. I searched in desparation for the pug that I had affectionately named Bread in the hopes that a kiss could boost my morale and keep me going, but to no avail. I finally reached a lush jungle filled with new and deadly obsticles. A udjat trinket that I had in my possession drew me closer to a wall covered in moss and vines. I placed my last bomb against the soil and a secret passage was revealed to me. I cautiously entered to find an illegal den of shopkeeper peddling their wares. Due to my moral compass, and perhaps because they had a lot of cool stuff I couldn't afford, I took a boomerang from one of the natives and killed every last thing that moved. Covered in blood I left the jungle, flying around with my newly acquired jetpack. In the ice caves I came across a giant blue head. An item I picked up in the jungle glowed gently. I knew that I had to die. I managed to crush myself under the weight of a falling platform, which unbeknownst to me at the time, exploded my jet pack and killed me instantly. I awoke inside the blue head and possessed a stylish new hat for my sacrifice. I felt refreshed, but devastated that I no longer possessed my jetpack. Into the temple I continued. A jackel-headed god felt the wrath of my recently acquired shotgun, and I took a shiny new trinket for my troubles. My attachment didn't last, as the trinket was a key to the fabled City of Gold. Everything around me shone brilliantly, though I couldn't lose sight of my task. I had few bombs and a tattered book of human flesh was the only treasure I sought from this place. I swiped it up to discover that the jacket-headed god had returned. Again they were no match for my shotgun. I left this place of wonder, knowing that it was only a distraction. I cautiously creeped into the next room. A cult was worshipping a statue of the great Omec. Before I could try anything the statue burst to life and crushed those around it. Before me stood the mighty Olmec. I climbed up high to safety and looked for things that might help my survival. I whipped an old crate and found just what I needed. The mightly Olmec was no match for my mattock! I dug a hole down straight down to lava. Olmec followed me, trying to crush me under its weight. But Olmec was too predictable. I stepped to the side and it fell down into the lava below. The exit was to my right. I knew that I had succeeded. But instead of leaving I jumped onto its head and rode my way to another door. The book I had acquired gnawed at my fingers in warning, but I could not be assuaged. It was hot. I knew why I gave my life to the Moai head in the ice caves. Because only the dead could descend down into hell. I had three bombs, too many ropes, and not enough health. I needed more items. I used my final bombs to kill the ancient vampire Vlad, so I could take their cape and amulet. To my surprise the shopkeepers had followed me into hell. But I suppose where else would they have gone? I could hear the booming of Yama, king of the underworld. I was so close. I would be remembered as a hero. But with Vlad's cape I wasn't able to get out of a hole I had fallen into quick enough. Two vampires dove in after me and ended my journey.
