....You're not technically not wrong, but you ought to know that "Gunthro and the Epic Blunder" is actually the *fourth* game in the series, and the easiest one.
The release date is as follows:
1: King Dungan's Dungeon
2: Journey to Rooted Hold
3: The City Beneath
4: Gunthro and the Epic Blunder
By the time you finish "Journey to Rooted Hold" you should have seen more or less all of the game mechanics the series has to offer, and anyways, I would highly recommend playing them.
DROD1 (KDD) Architect's Edition is free, and should be what you play next after DROD4 (Gunthro) as it's the next step in difficulty. It doesn't need to be purchased through Steam if you're ok playing on the older engine.
Many of the custom holds are difficult, as that's what the community wants, but there are still many high-quality, easier holds. It is unfortunate that CaravelNet is paid, but it makes sense for a dedicated community.
