As a long-time Resident Evil fan, I’ve been with this series for years. I started with Resident Evil 2, then went back to experience RE1 and RE3, and later even played RE0. I’ve followed this franchise for a long time and watched its story evolve step by step.

That’s exactly why this entry disappointed me in several ways.

To support the dual-protagonist / dual-route structure, the game turns Grace into an unarmed FIB analyst. I understand that Capcom was probably trying to build tension and vulnerability, but for someone who is supposed to calmly assess situations and analyze the scene, she feels surprisingly helpless far too often.

And then there’s the whole “Return to Raccoon City” angle. For a game marketed around the idea of going back, it honestly feels more like Raccoon City was just used as a selling point rather than a fully realized setting. Leon spends quite a while exploring the eastern side of the city, but when it comes to the Raccoon City Police Department, the game barely lets you be there before moving on. It ends up feeling like the RPD was included only as a brief callback, almost like the game is saying, “here, have your nostalgia moment, now let’s leave.”

But Raccoon City was never just the police station.

If we’re really talking about the roots of this franchise, then the Arklay Mountains should have mattered too. Why not go there? Even letting Leon pass through it briefly would have helped the world feel much more complete. Instead, it feels like Capcom only treated the RPD as the one and only landmark worth revisiting.

Another part I honestly found completely unnecessary was the orphanage section. In RE2 Remake, I understood why it existed — it helped reinforce Sherry’s escape and added emotional tension to that part of the story. But in this game? I genuinely don’t see the point. That entire section could have been replaced with files or environmental storytelling. It didn’t need to be a full gameplay sequence. I would’ve much rather had that development time spent on more exploration within Raccoon City itself.

That said, this game is not without strengths.

The return to a stronger balance of fear and combat is something I really appreciated. The switching between first-person and third-person perspectives is also a genuinely interesting gameplay choice, and at times it even gave me a bit of that classic RE2-style story progression, where both sides feel like they’re moving forward together.

There are also plenty of nice fan-service moments and callbacks. Seeing things like the giant spider and the return of classic Tofu was a lot of fun.

So overall, I’d give this game an 8.5/10.

It’s still a good Resident Evil game, but if I had to name the entries that surpassed it, I’d say RE7, RE8, the original RE1&2&3, and even RE1&2&3 Remake left a stronger impression on me.
