The developer's anti-science, misogynistic nonsense is bad enough on it's own, but letting that make it into the game and into customer interactions is another thing entirely. It's extremely unprofessional, no matter what your views are. If he'd kept his mouth shut he could have just been another anonymous moron, but now he's a moron AND a terrible businessman. Insulting and soapboxing at customers is a poor practice even if I happened to respect the dev's point of view, but this... all I can say is, backlash fully deserved. I'll be removing this game from my library shortly. I feel like an idiot having given this guy a cent on my money.

A fantastic game which offers a lot to both beginners and veterans. It's easy to pick up and play for the first time, but it also has tons of progression systems to keep the game fresh and engaging hundreds of hours in.

Gameplay wise, its a co-operative shooter in the vein of L4D2, but with randomly generated, fully destructable maps, access to tools like zip-lines, shields, platforms, and turrets, and multiple mission types. The map generation is some of the best I've seen full stop; some of the maps look amazing and have a lot of verticality which makes traversing them challenging and fun. The different mission types all offer something unique, but generally hinge around mining minerals and defending points while completing various tasks. On top of the basic mission tasks, there are also plenty of secondary objectives, minibosses, and hidden treasures to discover. Deep Rock has a healthy variety of enemies that threaten the players in different ways and require teamwork to deal with. The game has 4 classes that compliment each other very well, meaning there are multiple ways to approach each objective depending on your team's combination of classes and loadouts.

Outside of the direct gameplay mechanics, Deep Rock has a deep variety of progression systems. At first, you'll be unlocking new weapons and basic equipment upgrades for your 4 classes, but over time you will start to unlock weapon mods, cosmetic items, and perks, many of which can change the gameplay experience in a significant way. There is even a progression system for unlocking new types of beers in the bar. I've never felt lacking for something to work towards while playing this game.

Deep Rock also just has a lot of character. The Dwarves are very loveable creatures with great voice lines. The corporate theme is funny and can be surprisingly thought provoking. The enemies are iconic - the kind of design where you could identify each enemy simply by its silhouette. This strong design means the game needs to lean less on special effects, and it looks great even at very low graphical settings. Its efficient to boot, at less than 2 GB, a serious feat for a game that looks this charming.

What truly sets this game aside, though, is the dev team, and the community they've fostered. When I bought this game a few years ago in EA, I was already impressed by it, but it was only a tiny slice, or a foundation, of what it is now. The devs are constantly adding new content and balances to the game, and they really do listen to the communities input. Their love for the game shines through in every facet of its design. I'd say the game has probably tripled in size in terms of content since I started playing, with a constant stream of new enemies, missions, weapons, and progression systems to play with.

In summary, Deep Rock offers deep cooperative gameplay with tons of different tools to approach each situation, a broad array of iconic enemies, charming characters, voice lines, and visuals, deep progression systems with an endless list of missions to complete and new toys to unlock, and a dev team that just won't quit. It's easy to offer this game a strong, unqualified recommendation to anyone who enjoys cooperative play and teamwork. Rock and Stone!

Unintuitive, challenging, old-school, and absolutely unforgiving. You need a good imagination and some patience to enjoy this game, and a bit of experience with older, clunkier games will help. I have to disagree with other users - I haven't found the game experience to be "unfair". Yes, sometimes an enemy will get a lucky shot and get you in the head with an arrow, and you'll die. Yes, it is hard to kill bears. Yes, you can work all winter to build a nice cabin, only to absent-mindedly fall through the thinning ice carrying too much gear and drown. In all of these cases, I felt that the challenge was fair, and I could recognize the mistakes I made that led to the death. I felt each death was meaningful and I learned a lot about the game each time, and I am still learning.

Once I got over the initial learning curve, this has easily been one of the best and most immersive experiences I've had with a game. I can't quite describe it, because it looks pretty underwhelming at a first glance, but there is some magic in this game if you are willing to hustle a bit for it. The game constantly challenges you to make tough decisions and manage your time carefully. My favorite part is the wound system - ripping off a piece of my fur cloak and dragging myself to a branch on the ground to splint my broken leg just feels perfect. The animal AI makes hunting a constant challenge, and the wide variety of traps, weapons, and hunting strategies keeps it fresh even hundreds of hours in. On top of that, it just has this indefinable charm - it's a loveable game.

I can't recommend this game to impatient players or those looking for a "smooth" experience. Nor can I recommend it for those looking for a quick couple hours of fun. If you're like me and love simple looking games with unbelivable complexity under the hood, pick it up!

Great fun if you have someone for CO-Op. Best on LAN. Have your buddy bring his laptop over.
