This review will, necessarily, be a bit long, because the game tries to be all things to everyone without quite pulling off any one thing.

Coming from BGS's TES series (Skyrim, Oblivion, etc.), I expected more personality to this: though, given that this game is more like WoW than a Bethesda game, perhaps I should not have, Often it shows in the little things: the loading screens, much of the soundtrack, and most of the writing and voice acting are weak compared to a BGS game.

Fundamentally, this game struggles with identity issues. Is it primarily a multiplayer RPG, or a single-player one? There's plenty of content for the single player, but resource instancing means you are competing with other players to mine ore, for example: though loot drops from bosses are available to all. Doors in dungeons that need to be opened by puzzle may need to be opened by EVERY MEMBER of a party, which is truly one of the game's bigger puzzles.

Conversely, the multiplayer content is mainly endgame, for guilds and people who have been playing most or all of the game's 10 years. And the bulk of the MMO parts of the game is PvE, so even if there are multiple PvP modes, most of them feel neglected.

Then there's the issue of DLC and the ingame economy.

Anyone who doesn't subscribe to the roughly $20 CAD/month ESO Plus service is at a severe disadvantage when it comes to build optimization especially for PvP, game progression, and particularly crafting. Inventory management is, bluntly, a nightmare. The game throws contrived and arbitrary limitations at you which often can only be solved by spending real-world currency. You will see more people at any given time managing their inventory or in a bank, than in a dungeon.

That being said, is the community mostly good, other than the obvious scammers and the odd troll? Yes. Are there hundreds or even thousands of hours of content in the base game that don't require DLC? Also yes, although much of it will feel like cheap copy-paste of all the other areas and dungeons you have been to.

The game feels like it's on its last legs. Most of the updates for years have been uninspired cosmetic updates, not new game modes or kinds of enemies, abilities, etc.

Still, if you can get this on sale (as it is right now), it may be worth it for the sheer amount of content. Just don't expect the game to last much longer, and remember that since it's a live service game, when the plug is pulled, all those fancy cosmetics and player homes that people have spent real-world currency on, will just vanish. But give it a try if you like fantasy RPGs, because although it doesn't do anything close to perfectly, it does enough stuff well enough.

For a console port, this is pretty decent. If you have played Sekiro then this will seem familiar in design and combat, even though the theme is quite different.

Ultimately, I prefer 1st person to 3rd, but there is good exploration, combat, loot, and level progression in this game.

It takes 4 minutes to load a map, then you spawn in right next to a bear and get killed in 12 seconds.

10/10

I'm giving this a thumbs-up, but... there are a lot of "buts."

This is a huge, epic-scale open-world ARPG. I wish Fallout 4, made about the same time and also by Bethesda, had had this level of detail and playability, because I much prefer its post-apocalyptic setting to the faux-medieval world of Skyrim, even though I like DnD, Warhammer, etc. (Unfortunately, though, Fallout 4 is a settlement-building simulator for the first countless hours, but that's for another review.)

So what's my complaint about Skyrim? Mainly, dragons.

Dragons are supposed to be the whole point of Skyrim, and entirely propel the main plot, which has superb voice acting by the late Max von Sydow and Christopher Plummer, who represent the leaders of two rival factions with different approaches to the dragon menace.

But the dragons have buggy AI, sometimes flying away from a fight. Worse, they become a mere distraction from the immersive open world, which is ultimately the greatest part of the game. The main plot, and a number of the major side plot lines (such as the Companions and Thieves Guild and Civil War quest lines), try to pull you away from natural exploration, and each other, and the main quest line.

And yet, at a certain point, your skills could be such that the dragons are only a minor nuisance, less of a threat than a random magic-using bandit in a small dungeon, or a group of 2-3 Falmer (a Gollum-like annoying race that only lives in certain caves and Dwarven ruins).

Right at the beginning, your character is sent to retrieve a stone mapping out the dragons. Is this map overlaid on your in-game world map? Nope, it's just a piece of paper stored under "Miscellaneous" in your backpack. Do the dragon lairs have any real function? No, other than some (not those on the dragon map) which give you "words of power" which you can use to progress towards acquiring "shouts." Some of these "shouts" are locked behind side quest lines, and many are functionally the same as magic spells, or just don't work or level well.

Back to those dragon mounds on the stone, though: dragon spawns have little or nothing to do with this map, and are instead pseudo-randomly created by the game engine, sometimes resulting in two dragons spawning at once. At other times, there might be no dragons for days, even if you run around on a dragon mound clearly marked on the map for minutes. So why did I bother getting that map at the beginning of the game, again?

There are also significant issues with enemy levels and the way side quests are ordered, assigned, etc. You may have to use console commands at some point merely to avoid your playthrough being completely broken. I understand that it's practically mandatory to use something called "the Unofficial Patch," but my review isn't based on that, but rather the game itself.

And, that game is visually stunning in a way that holds up surprisingly well. The combat and loot is great, as is the soundtrack. As in most ARPGs, your character can become various kinds of specialists by gaining skill points, which is a fun mechanic here.

Skyrim has many great qualities, and I would even say something for everyone, but is ultimately a little disappointing because of its numerous bugs and plot holes, and the imperfect relationship between the main and various side quest lines and the open world.

Fallout 4 is a post-apocalyptic Bethesda open-world game, so as you'd expect, there's wonderful design/aesthetics, lots to explore and loot, tons of crafting and weapons, and also lots of bugs and things that are counter-intuitive and will have you pausing the game to look up things on your phone or second monitor.

Still holds up well for a game of its age. Totally worth it on sale.

This is the first game I ever played on Steam, and it's a classic. But get the Orange Box on sale.

A brilliant form of torture invented by the KGB, to protect against an even worse form of torture also invented by the KGB: having a 4-stack of Russians in CSGO screaming insults at you because you don't hit your shots.

A dark yet very well-made PvE crafting survival game. Instead of surviving a nuclear apocalypse like Fallout or Rust, though, you must survive during a war closely resembling the Siege of Sarajevo with a team of civilians.

You can use crafting, barter, and scavenging/looting to try to get by. Sometimes the RNG will be cruel to you, but that's war.

You can replay the game multiple times with different character combinations.

Not a cheerful game, but a deeply powerful one where you must make moral choices as well as quick, practical decisions for survival.

I have only played about 10 hours of CP2077 and I am just at the very beginning of the game. With many other games, I'd be almost done or halfway through at the same point.

There's a lot of content, combat, and loot in Cyberpunk 2077, and the experience is immersive, with great world creation, art design, backstory, atmosphere, and the ability to change the outcome with your choices.

Most (but not quite all) of the bugs people complained about at launch seem to be long gone, and with the different specializations and story lines available, I can foresee playing this for hundreds of hours. Not many AAA games, even, hold that potential for replayability.

UPDATE FOR PHANTOM LIBERTY/2.0

Though this is still a good game, it's not nearly as good as 1.3-1.6 were.

In 2.0, Projekt Red has introduced level scaling and non-transparent skill trees where you can't see what attributes are next until you have picked them.

The Diablo-like levelling system has also eliminated the usefulness of clothing and the ability to upgrade anything but iconic weapons, creating a constant lack of useful gear and the need to re-craft or upgrade the few iconics the game drops every few levels.

Worse, there is now a needless grind for crafting components, which used to be available for sale at merchants.

The new skill tree system has effectively stripped specialist playstyles (netrunners, stealth builds, assault rifle builds, etc.) of their strength, and pushed everyone to a medicore generalist playstyle.

Note that you can still play v1.63 by selecting the Beta branch, but then you can't play the Phantom Liberty DLC.

If you are sitting on the fence whether to buy this now, I would wait weeks or months until things have stabilized, because v2.0/the DLC have added some game-breaking bugs that weren't there in previous versions.

A free turn-based espionage game where you play against AI to undertake missions for your country's secret service.

Mainly fun, but sometimes the game hangs/freezes despite my having a good system. Still, it's free.

Part of the attraction is in the national flags you can get as drops to decorate your profile.
