Fantastic little game, well worth its price tag

If there's one thing I'd ask for its more maps and more music!

A short but fun game. Its quite pricey for the length, 8 dollars for roughly 2 and a half hours of content. With that said what is here is very well made and I have no qualms about paying a bit extra for a single developer indie project.

The boss fight at the end was surprisingly great. At first I was skeptical because it was just reusing enemies from earlier in the game, but the way it all came together worked wonderfully and resulted in a very enjoyable fight with a nice tempo to it.

An incredible dissapointment. I would love to review the game based on it's gameplay, but sadly I'm not able to because of constant lag and stuttering which I expect is coming from when textures are streaming. The game is completely unplayable in it's current condition and it's honestly a travesty that the developers claim that this game is a finished product. It's a beta, at best, and I will most likely refund my purchase.

Maybe I'll pick the game up again later. Maybe in a year or so. If the game has improved then I might change this review but in it's current condition it's completely unplayable.

***PS: I have not yet played the campaign as of writing this review. It is purely based on the multiplayer***

So. During the Beta playing 3v3 I found the Multiplayer to be pretty boring. It seemed like the games were determined from the start, with almost no way of coming back from loosing the early game. Why is this? Because as far as I've noticed if you loose your first units then it is game over. Your enemy will always have a larger force since they will be getting more resources and from the fact they did not loose those starting units.

However, having played more of the Multiplayer, specifically 1v1, I have been able to look at a few more aspects. Is it still decided by whoever wins the early game? Yes, in some way. However I also find this to be a case of git gud. Now before you call me an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for saying that I would like to explain why.

I find the races to be fairly balanced in the early game. You will both probably have the same amount of units if your build order is correct and they will both probably be about as strong. With correct micro you can start winning those early engagements, and even if you loose them you should be able to keep your units alive and fall back. This will leave you with a force about as strong as your opponents, and while you will be on an income disadvantage it is still recoverable with good engagements allowing you to win a game even though you lost the early game.

I would however be lying if I said it had been completely "resolved" (or perhaps rather that I have learnt how to deal with it since) because there is a distinct lack of harrasing capabilities. In Starcraft 2 you can come back from a disadvantage by being a pesky harraser and destroying your opponents economy which is something that adds a good element to the game. There is very little of this in Dawn of War 3 however. Why? Well let's look at the maps. The maps are in general very linear with obvious lanes that you fight down and while on some maps there are smaller lanes to sneak around (which btw if you use correctly can help you win an engagement you would otherwise have lost) it is still impossible to get into their resource generation without first defeating their army. There are hover vehicles that can combat this by floating over impassables but they are generally a heafty investment and not something you can afford while being on the back foot and still having to fend off your opponents army, and as such I don't find them to be particularily useful.

THE NEXUS:
I have a sort of love/hate relationship with the MOBA like nexus and tower mechanics. I like the Nexus because really the only thing it does is stop your opponent from hiding away a building in BFE just to spite you. However I find the turret to mostly be a time sink since any smart player will simply tech up and steam roll the turret once they have a big enough army, meaning that what could be a cool mechanic to get back into the game seems to mostly just drag the game on longer.

THE GRAPHICS:
Some people love it, some people hate it, some people don't care. I like the graphics. They're bold, pop and are nice to the eye however I can understand if they don't seem grimdark enough. You can't say that the graphical
fidelity isn't there, but the art style is purely subjective. I like it.

BETWEEN GAME UPGRADES:
You can level up your elites and you can buy Army Doctrines and new elites with skulls. This mostly seems like a time sink to me and not something particularily enjoyable. Many games have some sort of unlock system and to be honest I don't see the point of any of them unless it's a F2P game where the devs need to make money somehow. However what is especially egregious are the Army Doctrines that need you to level up elites. Most of the time they don't seem to synergize specifically with the elite which makes having to level them up first seem pointless and like a huge time sink. I really don't like it and since all of the races use the same skull pool it means you can't change races if you have spent all your skulls since you will be at a disadvantage.

BASEBUILDING:
Building up your base is nothing special. You have a small number of buildings that produce a small number of units each. In my opininon base building has never been the strong point of any RTS and what they have seems to be enough to do the job.

COMBAT:
I see that a lot of people on the steam forums and on the review page has been bashing the combat for it's slow response time and general clunkiness. I however have to say this is where the game really shines and makes it worthwhile to recommend.
I find the combat to be incredibly exhilirating due to the fast pace and abilities allowing you to make important quick tactical decisions. Nothing makes me so happy as to use my Space Marines flamers to roast charging orkz or to rain steel rain (drop pods) from the sky unto the cowardly Eldar Skum's firing lines. There are a lot of tactical decisions to be made all throughout the game from the early game where having one unit engage the enemy in melee while the rest provide covering fire can be crucial to the late game when knowing where and when to use your droppods and assault marines can win you the battle.

It is in my opinion a huge step up from DoW1's combat where you would simply throw two balls at eachother and spend most of the time making sure the unit pathing got them to where they should be. Anyone who says DoW1's combat is better than DoW3's is either looking through rose tinted glasses or we have very different ideas of what is fun in an RTS. But it is better than DoW2's combat? I'd say they have two very different beasts. DoW2 is on a much smaller level with different tactical decisions. If you prefer DoW2 or DoW3 is mostly up to your own personal preference wether you like to control large armies where the units and abilities are the focus or wether you like to control smaller units where their placement and anticipation of enemy movements is more important.

CONCLUSION
As a conclusion I would like to say that this game has it's faults that can turn a game into a slow drag where you are always loosing with no hope of winning in sight because of that one fatal mistep 20 minutes ago at the start of the game. However the large scale engagements and combat (especially when you are playing an even match) is in my opinion some of the most enjoyable RTS experiences I have had the joy to play in a long time. Perhaps with future patches bringing more units, variety and better maps this can truly become the staple of the DoW games to come, however with it's problems weighing down it is not that game just yet.
Would I recommend this game? If you are tired of SC2 then yes, perhaps mostly because it is one of the few classic RTS games still out there but I do at the same time find the game genuinely enjoyable.

This is a small hidden gem, it's singleplayer leaves much to be desired and the multiplayer is very small if not practically dead, however if you have a friend or multiple friends to play with then it is definitely worth picking up on a sale. Personally I have gotten over 27 hours in this game by only playing with one of my friends against eachother and it is always a new experience with many different fleets and tactics to explore.

A definite recommendation from me if you can get it on sale, however 10 euro might be a hard bargain especially as you will probably need a friend or two to play it with.

This game is so bad that it's great! A must buy if you're having a LAN. Buy it for you and your friends and watch as the halarious randomness ensues!
