Very spooky and has a great progression that appropriately makes you overconfident just to be caught by the spooky again.

As the game stands on 20 March, there are limited play options and a few major but infrequent bugs that require you to reconnect or restart the game. However, if you can enjoy the difficult activity of crewing a ship through a sea battle while cannonballs are flying into your face, water is rising up to your knees and the captain is spewing orders like a broken record, then this game will be fun for you. 7/10 in current alpha (daily/weekly patches)

More info about the game, as it currently stands.
The objective is to crew a ship as Navy or Pirates, sail across a long open space / around islands / around icebergs / nearby a volcano to sink your enemy ships using not only plain ol' cannonballs but also 'bar-shot' 'chain-shot' 'grape-shot' and 'heated shot' until one team can get past and access the enemy's island fortress - at which point you must blow out the gate and go up a ramp or two and pull down the flag to win.

Upon taking damage from enemy cannonballs, you need to find and repair holes in the ship, pump out the water, fix sails and potentially put out fires and/or burning crewmates. Once one ship is close enough to fire grappling hooks, you can board and fire rifles and guns of all sorts and engage in deadly sabre / pike / axe / grenade / broken bottle fights to kill the crew and gain supplies - which are needed to reload the cannons.

The learning curve may be steep, though overall there is not much to learn. Learning to captain a ship is a whole new experience, that not only requires the same knowledge of crewing but also directing 6 (small ships) or 14 (large) crewmates as well as strategically piloting and aiming the ship while being fired upon.

Thus far I have equally come across 4 types of players, not counting absolute newbies. I think the community is still small right now, and so will become better in the coming months:
- Trolls, who usually spew discorse over voice chat
- Vulgar Knowitalls, who can play well but tend to use a lot of profanity
- Quiet folk, who get the job done and don't say much
- Helpful veterans, who given the chance will advise new crew and captains in learning

Don't like long reviews? Here's some opinion keywords off my noggin:
Engaging. Deep. Critical thinking. Moving. Emotional. Replayable.

-----
And now the real deal. Forgive me for the lack of structure of my review, I prefer to just blurt out everything that comes to mine without planning my sentences. I'll try to avoid spoilers.

I've only played one other game that made me feel the same as this, being Bioshock Infinite. The storyline is really well set up - the characters dont seem forced, the voice acting is neat, the dialogue seems natural. They say "something" and "whatever" a lot, but if you think about it ... we say these words a lot when we are stressed for a word we can't quite get out. The characters definitely feel like legitimate people, especially in one particular scene where you must choose which of your friends to bring with you and which to leave behind to bunker down. They all shout at once XD

Mechanically, the game really only brings one or two new things to the table ... but in this day and age, even THAT is a challenge. And it must be said, everything else is damn solid. Controls don't feel clunky, they feel slow because you're a teenage girl walking paths or climbing walls. It feels realistic, which is good. It's technically a platformer I guess, but with contextual jumping/vaulting and climbing.

Back to the whole 'neat mechanic' thing: you have a radio that you must tune to particular frequencies to progress puzzles, being lights or shapes you come across in the environment. It's not altogether hard, but the frequencies are chosen seemingly at random and so you just have to scroll back and forth 'til you find it and the light changes.

Similarly, the other puzzle mechanic is winding tape players that are moving slowly. Again, not that hard, but you can't just do burnouts on your mousepad and get the puzzle in 0.54 seconds. The reel has to rotate at a set speed, which you have to judge using music that plays from it. Simple, but still very engaging.

Finally, there is a collectable/hidden items option 'quest' available if that takes your fancy. I personally only found one note accidentally, and I realized after I finished that the little somethings I was coming across could be radio'd to collect things. I was drawn in to complete the story and didn't care for collecting nicknacks at the time.

A piece of advice you would do well to remember: Listen to yourself when you talk back.

Very engaging and sometimes shocking game. Perfect 5/7.

Didn't know it required DirectX 11. My AMD card is too old to support that, meaning it crashes upon startup.
Lesson learned boys and girls. Check the game requirements before you buy.

That said, I'm gonna keep it until I get a better PC.

"Mixed Reviews" is about right. Some people are able to ignore the problems and make fun with what the game does, and others get hung up on the missing gameplay features that "every game should have". It's EA. It's being made. We're helping to make a difference by playing and showing SOE (Now Daybreak) what we want and what's broke.

I have fun playing. I'm in Australia and I have ~2-5 sec of lag. I get my friends and have a good run for several hours, avoiding the other players and attempting to 'level up' to the point where we have guns, backpacks, helmets and a car.

We're not there yet. But ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is it fun trying.

So if you have friends that play, you enjoy this kind of game and you have $20 to spare, give it a go.
If you're a lone wolf, get very angry with kill-on-sighters and can't bring yourself to look past sometimes blatently obvious issues, steer clear for a few months until a major update. Or Beta.
