This game is a glitchy mess.
The lore is top class, but you're better off watching a video-essay about it. Gameplay is BAD - 3/10 (for new players)

I played through the singleplayer campaign on medium. The brightness adjustment got stuck for me in the lowest setting for the whole duration of the game which made some sections an actual unfair, unbalanced nightmare. For hours i was walking into pitch black tunnels getting killed by things i couldn't even see. Not to mention the headache it gave me from staring at my monitor on max brightness for 10 hours. The pitch black darkness is NOT A FEATURE. The game is supposed to be dark, but you should be able to see atleast 3 feet infront of you without a source of light. If this happens to you, go into advanced settings and manually crank up your "brightness enhancement", the game does not tell you this in any way.

You can get your character stuck basically anywhere, as the polygons of the maps are misplaced. This translates to getting stuck on what seems like perfectly flat ground. There are a couple of jumping sections where you can get completely stuck by crouch jumping and clipping into some prop. The interaction boxes for actions are all over the place. You can interact with a blank wall in order to go through a door which is 4 feet behind it or next to it. Doors themselves are finicky. Many times you will press E to go through an unlocked door, only to find yourself still on the same side of that door. Same goes with item interactions. It's very easy to dodge by accident and end yourself by jumping off a roof or into an enemy. Also the swimming mechanic is a complete afterthought, it's a punishment to you for playing this game.

Map design is clever throughout the game with new shortcuts being unlocked all the time. The setting is gloomy, dreadful and repulsive which is great for this game, but you CAN AND WILL get stuck progression wise many times. The game does a BAD JOB at navigating you to your objectives. You have no compass, no tips, no hints, the game will NOT help you. Large, mandatory areas are made accessible only by a tiny window, vent or door hidden in the last place you'd expect it. For each objective you're given one or two short lines of text and you've got to figure the rest out yourself. This results in you having to wander aimlessly throughout the HUGE MAZE that this game is, searching for hours on end for a key item hidden away.

Items on the ground can be hard to tell apart from junk and debris, and sometimes when you drop an item it will completely disappear or clip into a wall and be lost. This can lead to a hardlock if you drop a key item. You will often find yourself spamming E to pick up an item with nothing happening, with space in your inventory. Also the game nonchalantly cuts your already small inventory in half at one point which is just plain annoying.

The combat could use a lot of improvement.
Melee combat feels silly because none of the weapons have any sort of range. Whether you're using a tiny pocket knife or a long sledgehammer, you will still only be able to hit enemies when you're right up in their face. The hitboxes of enemies are generally fine but some can be ridiculously offset and infuriating. The only way to not get hit yourself when attacking with a melee weapon is to hit the enemy in the head and then dodge. The hitboxes make this hard to accomplish and it just ends up feeling unfair to the player, made even worse by how rare healing items are at times. You can ONLY heal with said items.
Ranged combat is better. If you have any ammo left in your current magazine you will throw it away by reloading, no way around this. It's STUPID that enemies take the same amount of damage in their torso and their head. Also enemies have certain animations which make them completely invincible for a bit with no indication, which will get you killed many times. A whole damn shotgun deals only slightly more damage than a pistol, very silly. Firing spread can be INFURIATING. You can be right in the face of your enemy, probably kissing them too, and you will still MISS on occasion.

To me, the only good part of this game is it's story, which is unfortunately overshadowed by sloppy, unrefined gameplay.

One of the best games ever made, both in terms of gameplay and bang for your buck, its absolutely amazing!
The combat system is so satisfying and rewarding and it makes you feel really badass once you get the hang of it. I recommend this game to everyone! Also the story and lore is great aswell!

Great game with great potential

As long as you don't mind grinding and some minor bugs here and there War Thunder is basically everything it strives to be - a fun, large scale, complex battle simulator. Attack the D point!
