Ready or Not – Review

Overall:

Ready or Not is a great game, but it can be very challenging. If you’re unfamiliar with close-quarters combat (CQC) style hardcore shooters, expect a steep learning curve. That said, it’s a lot of fun once you get into it.

You can genuinely pick up real-world tactical concepts while playing, as some of them are absolutely essential to succeed; especially on harder difficulties. While I recommend the game, there are several areas where the developers could improve.

---

Commander Mode Feedback:

Persistence of Officer Deaths and Stress After Mission Failure
  1. It doesn’t make sense for team stress levels and officer deaths to persist after a failed mission.
  2. Most games treat failure as a “reset” that clears any setbacks from that attempt.
  3. For example, going into a mission with a full, high-morale team, failing, and returning to the main menu to find two officers dead and the others in crisis mode feels unnecessarily punishing.
  4. For example, going into a mission with a full, high-morale team, failing, and returning to the main menu to find two officers dead and the others in crisis mode feels unnecessarily punishing.
  5. Ideally, failed missions should revert your team to the state they were in beforehand.

Result: I end up using the old Alt+F4 method to avoid losing officers or having them stuck in high stress after a failure. This is compounded by the fact there’s no “Retry” feature; meaning you must restart the game, go through the mission briefing again, and wait for the load-in every time.

Gameplay Feedback:

Grenade Throwing Mechanics

  1. Throwing grenades accurately is far too difficult.
  2. At least half the time, I get a friendly fire penalty because I accidentally flash a teammate.
  3. Often, I’d rather throw a flashbang myself, but end up delegating to AI since it’s so tricky to get grenades exactly where I want; especially with objects in the way.
  4. I can promise you it's not this difficult to throw grenades in real life. Lol.

---

Conclusion:
Ready or Not is a great game, but really could use certain quality of life improvements to make it that much better.

Now. Developers if you're listening, PLEASE either entirely remove the censorship from the PC version or implement a toggle feature. I want to be horrified playing this game. Being a SWAT operator in an extremely dangerous city is scary and stressful. I want to feel that.

It's a better and more modern Left 4 Dead - it's just as fun if you're not blinded by the clouds of nostalgia as most people seem to be.

Honestly this game has a lot more potential.

This game can still give you a decent amount of playtime with the right mods and scenarios, but there are some things to consider.

1. The movement is really clunky - does not feel natural nor is it efficient.
2. The singleplayer campaign is terrible. The missions are buggy, and if you don't have a keyboard with a numberpad (I.e, laptop, or a Corsair K65 like me), good luck skipping whatever bugged up mission you're on because you can't rebind the cheat hotkey. Your best bet is putting the game on windowed and using the Windows onscreen keyboard with the numeric keypad enabled which still only works half of the time.
3. The inventory/backpack/item transfer system isn't good.
4. Unoptimized. The game isn't that impressive yet doesn't get the performance you'd expect.

The game isn't worth more than $15-$20. One could argue that the only reason it could potentially be worth more is because of the extensive mods available that improve the terrible experience I've had without them. However, you shouldn't need to rely on mods to give you a good experience.

I will start this off by saying that this review should be taken as a subjective opinion as opposed to objective fact. I find that most of the negative reviews are due to the server issues the game had post-launch that have mostly been fixed.

Some points:

-First of all, the gameplay is fundamentally unique despite the game looking very similar to Battlefield on the outside. +1

-The movement at the moment is quite janky - very often you'll get stuck/start moving very slowly while grinding against a wall or if a teammate is in the way. The movement needs to be smoothed and in my opinion, quickened to improve the flow of the game. It would be best if you also had a more natural and faster movement capability while prone. -1

-Bullet registration at the moment looks fine to me. Shots seem to be hitting when and where they should. +1

-Some overpowered weapons and particular weapon spam, in general, that is incredibly annoying. The Vepr-12 shotgun and RPG fragmentation rounds come to mind. The Vepr is a shotgun yet can sit there getting instant kills from distances a shotgun shouldn't. The RPG spam is also a fairly common occurrence although personally, I will admit I've been abusive of it myself (I'm not going to lie, it's fun). -1

-Game optimization currently is non-existent. High-end hardware computers are figuratively being crushed and adjusting graphics settings to me literally makes absolutely no difference to FPS. I have a 6700k CPU and a 1080Ti GPU and get bizarre frame rate inconsistencies. One day maybe I'll be stuck on fluctuating 50-70 FPS (all on the lowest settings, by the way(even with my high-end build!)) and another I'll be getting 120-150. It's weird, inconsistent, and unoptimized. -1

-Weapon damage and the armor system. I do like the idea of customizing armor to be able to absorb more damage in exchange for movement speed. However, some aspects to this seem broken right now; a .50 caliber sniper headshot that deals 65 damage? Really? Moreover, sometimes having to hit three shots with it in the chest to kill? I get the armor system, I like it, and I get the idea of aiming for another part of the body, but the current system with some weapons and bullet calibers is pushing it a bit IMO. -1

-The vehicles in my opinion (I think an unpopular one, not sure) are well balanced. You'll often see people post scoreboard screenshots of ridiculous kill:death ratios obtained via tanks and AFV's, but the enemy team in those screenshots must not only have no fingers but probably fell asleep on their keyboards as well. Vehicles are easy to destroy, but not too easy - it's just perfect IMO. +1

-Customization. It's amazing. It's extensive. You can get lost and lose hours just customizing and having fun with weapons. Need I say more? +1

-Weapon and vehicle variety. Currently, there aren't a whole lot of weapons or vehicles. -1

-Scorestreaks. People bash on this, but they are a creative way to implement modern warfare tactics like air strikes, artillery, etc. I also find that they're not even really that powerful - they can get many kills or none; they should be well-placed. +1

There are more points that I can't think of right now; I may edit later. Overall, I give this game a thumbs-up because, despite some of the problems it has, it's still an enjoyable game and the issues I listed above can be fixed with time and dedication from the developers.
