Has the same issue like the majority of the games like this with broken scaling. Its fine, an experienced player will get 10-15 hours of gameplay before the pevees start to mount up. Midgame the game becomes easy, lategame you can just afk because if you've built your weapon well, you're not going to see a single mob on the screen. they'll be killed before they reach your field of vision long before you've unlocked everything and upgraded all your genes. Once you've made a broken weapon once, don't worry, the next run you'll have two. Making it even easier.

The crafting and unlocking system, rogue-like system by buying power you carry over into the next game kind of mask the game's core gameplay mechanic not really being very fullfilling. By being locked to base weapons that limits the game unnecessarily. I'd make every weapon a group of basic parts with stats and allow players to swap components occasionally and let it organically grow. If it's a gun-crafting game, go all the way. Let us swap out the reciever, the barrel and caliber, buttstock, optics the magazine, etc not only upgrading but changing the base stats of the weapon itself but also components we've picked during gameplay.

It's also coming into an already crowded genre with a lot of strong contenders. The differentiation this game has is mostly superficial. Either the devs need a little bit more time to sit down and think what makes this game stand out against all the others or they're intentionally playing it safe and making the differences to the rest of the genre small to reduce risk.

Ultimately, there are very good survival games out there and this game fails to meaningfully build on that with somewhat superficial additions and changes (some of which i like). At a lower review rating i'd give it a thumbs up. But at 87% i'm not sure it lives up to the reviews. I don't think it's a 9/10.

Since it's an early access game i'm more than open to change my review later however some of the changes i'd like to see are a lot of work and the roadmap appears to be more about being content rich than redesigning basic systems based on player feedback.

Simplistic. Game has a pacing issue. The actions you're required to take each turn to be efficient scale exponentially.

At the start of the game you might use 5 cards in a turn. At the end of the game you could be using a hundred per turn and manage 20 units and several cities.

Researching technologies should automatically burn outdated technologies and card costs should scale with power to better manage having tons of resources and gold which causes the card mill that you become.

Overall it's still a quick simple 4x Game in a card format but it's following the civilization mold a bit too strictly. Cards are only ever removed if you personally burn them. The scaling you can achieve which is exponential ultimately causes a balance issue as well. I had no issue steamrolling hard AI on my 2nd game. if you get it on sale and don't expect 100's of hours of replayability it's fine.

By having technology destroy outdated cards, limiting redraws so they're not unlimited (as long as you have gold) and have card costs scale with technological level and power this game could really become quite good.

Previously, my review from 17th August 2024 was negative. The game has improved since then, with quality of life features and new content that make the game better. While i'm not entirely satisfied, for example the map generator on small hard, is still not satisfactory, the game overall is enjoyable.

I am a bit concerned that the devs might overcomplicate the game however, i have no issue with how the game has improved. it's in a good place at the moment and that makes me hope it'll keep getting better.

The latest patch has gone a long way towards making the game a lot more player friendly. It's just a bit, unfortunate that it took a release and negative reviews to make it a priority (and have it be completed within a week) when a basic playtest by an unbiased audience would suffice.

The fast reaction time is a plus and if they keep player experience in mind this game could become fantastic.

Most of the advancement still comes from unlocking extremely powerful powers and passives and bulldozing trough levels (And using spells to destroy enemy structures) rather than outsmarting or outplaying the challenge and sending zombies at enemies to destroy them.
I hope they focus on replayability and building a better core gameplay loop so they don't need to rely on the upgrades crutch so much for people to experience progression and enjoyment. Personally i find the power creep a bit too high. It's definitely an upgrade buying game.

So, this game is right now (early april 2024) in it's minimum viable product stage. It's barebones, a bit clunky.

An Orcs must die! clone in space. That doesn't mean it's bad or unethical. Honestly, i'm hoping for someone to do a good reinterpretation of Orcs must die, i like the game. I think it could potentially have promise if the dev keeps working on it.

Pricey for what you get.

Game is ok, you need to manage time and can't do everything each stage which is fine but difficulty needs to be adjusted. The start is difficult even for someone with a lot of genre experience which leads to slow resource acquisition, slow upgrading and unlocks and just a grind overall. Some obvious balance issues aswell.

It's actually a problem with the genre as a whole that has unmitigated powercreep the more you play making gameplay duller instead of making the game more challenging the more you play. Wish someone actually did something about that. Ease a player into the mechanics and then apply difficulty as they gain upgrades and unlock new stuff.

This is the typical unbalanced experience we see in the genre that's excused by being "hardcore" when in reality the devs just haven't paid adequate attention to the balancing of the initial 10 hours of the game at all and made it unneccessarily hostile to the player.

Extremely unbalanced. It is playable, fun for a short time but largely flawed. Some weapons just don't work well. Some are insanely OP. The game is very snowball-y and that's not very fun giving you a further incentive to abuse overpowered weapons. Its rogue like elements aren't very fun implementations and just give you a straight up power boost upon completing a background.

Depending on how much you value your entertainment and if you enjoy the idea/setting. this could be somewhere between a "buy it on sale" and "waste of money" game. I advise to play on the easier difficulty initially and then go to harder ones as you unlock the boosts from completing backgrounds. Mostly it's a gimmick with janky combat.

It's still a thumb up overall but i think the game needs another combat rework to really shine, improvement to throwing weapons, maybe add in dedicated throwable weapons, auxillary weapons like holding a spear, shield and a small dagger, a bit better AI, fewer traps in the maps. Honestly, maybe just split the game into arcade and tactical game modes? Things take too long to die and that's not fullfilling on a personal level. On the other hand faster combat would make the issue with management worse.

There's also too much gladiator and equipment management in the game. I'd prefer having access to the shop and services every 5 fights (1 week, being able to skip fight for fame) with occasional invitations to single special events etc. This would allow to speed up combat and make it more decisive without having people spend the majority of their time in career management. There are a lot of opportunities to improve the game and that's the reason i'm giving it a thumbs up. I think the dev needs to sit down and reconsider what are the fun elements of the game and how to maximize them and make them replayable. Too much of a good thing (inventory, weapons, career management and shop) can harm gameplay. Having enemies too tanky feels bad. Even if the combat is longer it's not satisfying.

Started a undivided Archeon campaign to recruit and play around with the new Blue scribes because the aimlessness of the changeling doesn't appeal to me. Part of the quest was to conquer and occupy a region that was the last region of a possible vassal (Boris). Captured a region but gave it to vassal thinking it can't be that silly, handing out a quest that's detrimental to the player and the faction objective/mechanic (vassalage). Can't declare war and take the region, and the quest line didn't change to a more suitable target. 10/10 would buy again. Can't play the hero i wanted.

Honestly... I'm not having a great experience with the DLC, it looks rushed, not very well tested, thought out and underwhelming in what it does offer even if we ignore the price entirely. The complete inability to settle as Changeling just makes me uninterested. I'd be happy if we were able to establish a large main base in each theatre at least but that's not the case. With AI not seeing your armies it just makes the campaign uninteresting and there's little to no threat in doing anything.

The AI is not fun.

All it does is attack you with overwhelming odds. You'll never fight a winnable defensive battle without absolutely cheesing the AI. And it constantly runs from every fight it's not favored in.

The reason AI gets insane bonuses to combat and economy is so we can have a challenging and fun experience with AI running multiple stacks and stronger units. If it uses that to abuse information the player doesn't see (FOV) to attack undefended settlements and then further starve them out until there's no chance of victory, if it runs from every fight not in their favor, what's the point?

It's OK if the AI occasionally does this - that would make it look smarter. But it's so bad CA had to remove small settlement siege battles because the game was boring and the AI refused to fight.

Running around in AI's territory? Unless the AI had a overwhelming advantage i've never seen it come and try and stop my army on the field.
