The Nexus Mods App [github.com] - this is the new Nexus Mods app and officially supports Linux. still deeply in beta right now, but they're working on it pretty consistently, and it already supports Cyberpunk 2077 (albeit a little janky lol)
Heroic Games Launcher [github.com] - this is the Heroic Games Launcher, it's like Steam and the Steam client, but it's for epic, GOG, and amazon prime games. really great soft and it natively supports lots of Proton versions built right in. really flawless.

if you've read this far, you're clearly deeply interested in us, and wanna know some of our morals, ethics, and the like. congrats! you're curious, so read on and enjoy, this is gonna get detailed, and perhaps even a little vulgar as we're passionate about this stuff.

DRM is fine, it's fair, and i'd even say it's good, if it's removed once it serves its purpose. a reasonable time frame being a year after release, or upon their final patch/update (perhaps even put the game on the biggest sale of its release to encourage purchases instead of piracy), to ensure that games can't be lost, and prevent people who buy legitimate copies from getting their game revoked, as when this happens, piracy is encouraged. frankly, the best form of DRM and assurance against piracy is quality control, ensuring that legitimate purchasers have the complete and utter best experience, where pirates' experience lacks a lot of quality and/or polish. people are extremely unlikely to pirate if buying the game is the best experience, and at a fair price, but they will change their minds if piracy provides a better experience. companies are making and selling a product, an experience, and that only works if what people receive is the best experience. think about it this way: you can buy hot dogs cooked with a lighter for $1 at one person, or walk a minute and pay $3 for one cooked to perfection at a cart, with a selection of toppings. which will you pick? the second most likely, even though it's triple the price. but who will make the same choice if it's $15 for the better one? almost nobody. the same thing will happen if the prices are swapped, you'll choose the better option, and much more easily if it's cheaper. companies & devs need to ensure they're the hot dog cart for $3, not the other way around, and not for $15. people will pay for things, and most will even pay really quite a lot if it's something well worth it. over-zealous anti-cheat and anti-tamper methods ruin the experience. all that said, good DRMs that are not overzealous and fair, and protect the games without diminishing the experience are as follows:

Steam's various protections are fair and good as they are built into the platform seamlessly, with virtually 0 impact to legitimate purchasers and users, and highly trusted with a long tenure of compatibility and excellent service
Denuvo's Anti-Tamper that purely mangles the executable (hot take, i know). it only mangles the executable file, and runs alongside it to communicate with things like Steam's protections to ensure they work, and has Linux compatibility.

Kernel Level Anti-Cheat services are filthy spyware, and just an ever-encroaching hand in the lack of privacy, right to own, right to repair, etc, that corporations use now. user level things such as ones that run alongside the game and monitor the system while it runs, bundled as part of the exe, similar to DRM that is uninstalled alongside the game being uninstalled are fair and plenty of detection, and should be used if the game has a PVP focus, but for games with single player and multiplayer, it should only be required for the PVP sections of the game. and should not require an internet connection at any time (if you're doing PVP, you'll have one anyways). think about it this way: would you buy a painting if the seller stipulated that they need to accompany it at all times, and must come live with you when you buy it, and if you do something they don't like, they'll throw a tantrum? no, especially not when you would need to give them access to your home, which is a security risk. how do you know they won't let an intruder in and destroy the place? you don't. that's essentially what anti-cheat is, and when there's better ways that are less intrusive, such as putting the painting in a glass case and ensuring it cannot be physically touched, similar to DRM that unnoticably mangles the exe or prevents modifying/observing it while running, kernel level anti-cheat is an overzealous, toxic, controlling, pathetic excuse to give companies deeper access to your digital property, and devices

there are very few times where buying a license to a game is ok in our opinion and i'll explain those below
1 - live service or mmo games advertised as such where on the store page is says "purchase license to game" and have a legal guarantee the license will last for at least 1 year so long as you don't cheat (no servers will shut down for at least a year).
2 - competitive or similar games where you can harm the experience of others who bought and paid for it and it will end up being required that some players get banned for doing so

that's it. and if it's single player or advertised as anything other than a license, or selling it as a license doesn't make sense, then the developers and/or publishers that made the decision are ♥♥♥♥ and deserve none of your business. full stop. if it is sold as a license however, it needs to be stated that that's what you're buying, in plain text, on the store page, next to the purchase button, in clear text stating you are purchasing a license. period. anything less should be illegal and any dev and/or publisher that doesn't do so doesn't deserve your business and again, is ♥♥♥♥. full stop.

this is a list of every product, brand, dev, etc that we despise, and refuse to provide further business with, including the justification for such, and we encourage you to re-evaluate spending any money on their products. vote with your wallet if you agree. similar ones will be bundled into groups.

these are all of the worst offenders that brick devices, ruin experiences, have horrible track records for quality, remain on your machine even after the game is uninstalled, and/or have extremely high level access, and high threat security risks should they be compromised due to said access.
they're trash, have minimal compatibility, they also seem to have been breached in March of 2024, and therefore all devices with their anti-cheat are now vulnerable. i hope they go bankrupt
they are overzealous and their anti-cheat runs the minute your PC boots up. if this is breached, there's the capability to make a RAT or other form of software that can quite literally brick every single computer it is installed on.

these are all the devs that have disappointed us, and begun to fall into the sinkhole that is toxic, leeching capitalism that is so overzealous that supporting them isn't worth the money, or just made horrible decisions as a company/development team that have lost our respect
they are a hyper-capitalistic company that has become so money hungry that even some of their most die-hard fans have begun to lose faith, and respect in them. they are an unreliable company, whose pleasing of their most loyal fans and customers is entirely binary and unstable.
their EULA for many if not all their games states the game is licensed to you and not sold. they will receive no more of our business.
