Slay The Spire 2 ★★★★☆

Disclaimer: At the time of this review the game is still early in its relative development post-launch. Current opinions are likely to change as the game goes through its update cycles. Assuming it is anything like its predecessor, I expect it to get better, not worse.

The defining staple of deck building strategy has a fantastic sequel with this title. Most of my opinions regarding the first game apply here—this game balances its complexity incredibly well for new and experienced players alike. It is challenging and rewarding, both defeats and victories inspire new runs. The balance is still being refined, multiplayer has several bugs and a lackluster UI, but in time I can only hope these things improve. For fans of the first game this is a definite purchase. For anyone new to the series, unless you want to enjoy the multiplayer aspect I'd personally recommend the first game over this as it is a completed product.

Rainbow Six Extraction ★★★☆☆

In my experience it's not too frequent I find a Tactical Coop FPS title that's easy to get into while still being interesting. Rainbow Six Extraction has been quite fun solo, more so with a group, presenting gunplay and enemy design that feels satisfying to engage with. While the game has really solid elements all around, I can't help but feel that a lot of this was likely just ported over from Rainbow Six Siege (I haven't played more than a little bit many years ago) in order to keep players already interested in the franchise hooked just a bit more, rather than being built to be a strong title independently.
This translates into the progression and pacing structure of the game feeling lackluster, uninspired, and ultimately pointless. Increasing operator levels feels like a consequence of playing rather than something to engage with, missions have no grit because you can leave effectively whenever you want, and recovering lost operators is too easy a mission type and boring in execution. While practically irrelevant to gameplay, the weekly reward of premium currency from the game's most difficult mode is such a pittance of a payout (within an absurdly priced cosmetic shop with a downright predatory purchase scheme) it hurts the little incentive that could have existed for engaging with end-game content.
Despite these things, this only somewhat undermines how fun the gameplay is. I just wish it had more depth to extend replayability.

Remnant: FTA ★★★★☆

Important Note: This rating assumes both DLC are owned, as they greatly contribute to the overall experience. Without them the game would likely fall a star rating. Still a good game, but notably less enticing.

This has been a fantastic co-op 3rd person shooter experience. I can't say I feel Remnant: FTA does anything particularly innovative, but that's not a bad thing as it's easy to pick up and hard to put down. It's got great build customization, simple but intriguing bosses, and solid gameplay mechanics. I do have several gripes: Melee is generally awful despite having plentiful equipment tailored to it (I could explain at length but for review's sake I will withhold), many enemy attack hitboxes are seemingly disjointed or delayed unpredictably, and puzzles are almost entirely of poor design; many make no more sense after researching the answer. Less problematic but noteworthy, infrequent yet game breaking bugs cause random deaths or the inability to use certain inputs. This could just be a server issue, considering some items don't work properly as a client. Despite interesting worldbuilding, the lore and story is a cobbled mess, which to even the attentive player will leave much to be desired. Still, the gripping gameplay and colorful worlds greatly outweigh these issues.

Worth a buy when Remnant II exists?
I find Remnant II to be a sidegrade at best, with the additional added complexity to be bloat at worst. Remnant: FTA is far more streamlined; It's got great replayability and difficulty factor despite housing a simpler customization system. For many, myself included, this is generally a positive, as too many build decisions makes choices needlessly difficult. Besides, there's enough unlocks that the added layers in the 2nd game really don't add as much as it may seem at first glance. My main point to take away here is that the first game is independently good enough that it's still a worthy buy comparatively.

Sunderfolk ★★★☆☆

The fact only one person has to buy this game and can then share it with countless others is its biggest selling point to me. This has the vibe of picking up a board game for game night, or playing something like Jackbox (in terms of shareability). I've completed two campaigns, one in balanced and one in challenging (the middle two difficulties), and have had a blast (roughly 30 hours each). The storytelling is lighthearted and goofy, but is still reasonably interesting. The gameplay provides enough depth to carve out your own preferences and strategies, though simple enough it's easy to pick up.

On the flip side of things, the game is a bit rough around the edges. The mobile app controller can feel a bit clunky; it would have been a huge plus if you could fully play on PC. Additionally, gameplay elements can be confusing or outright misleading. I find the lack of consistency with my ability to predict how the game works (despite the information tabs being thorough) massively ruins the approachability of the harder difficulties. Something as simple as "Does this terrain feature with health count as a creature for my ability that only damages creatures" unfortunately has a multitude of different answers depending on what the object in question is, and inconsistently so. There are plenty of other small gripes I have, but ultimately these do not dissuade from the casual experience of your average group, I just tend to be very particular with strategy games and approaching the more challenging difficulties they provide.

TLDR: This is a fantastic strategy party rpg, which gains significant buy value the more people you can play it with. The world and gameplay is incredibly enticing and easy to understand, though the lack of polish is of significant detriment for those who enjoy the challenge of higher difficulties in strategy games.

Outer Wilds ★★★★★

This game is brilliant. What an absolutely fantastic 20~ hour experience this was. Every corner of this game is colorful and interesting. They really nailed the ambience provided by the music, planets, and lore you slowly uncover. The way that everything begins to connect together as you explore the galaxy and solve its mystery is incredibly well done. Interestingly to me is that the game can (practically speaking) only be played once. The progression system is entirely based on your own knowledge, made conveniently accessible as things you find automatically log into your ship. This is a game that can be completed quite quickly once you understand what's going on, and thus the journey you take to get there can't be replicated once you beat the game. Unless you get stuck, spoilers will completely defeat the point of the game. The "going in with no knowledge" attribute is so important here I would caution against reading too much about this game, the experience is worth it! A definite recommend for anyone interested in an exploration game where learning and problem solving are the main focus of game play.

Peak strikes the perfect balance you want from a simple premise game. It's cheap, easy to pick up, fun with friends, but has just enough depth and replay value to make it hard to put down.

Pegglelike meets Roguelike in a fantastically charming and interesting game. If not for how well polished the game is, the puns alone give this a recommend.

Great Roguelike FPS. My only real complaint is that the English translations are pretty bad. Feels like I need to check the wiki constantly to understand things.

Raft ★★★★☆

For a fairly simple survival-crafter, Raft is surprisingly polished and well thought out. The gameplay and progression systems are solid, being fairly easy to understand and reasonably satisfying all the way through. Besides a few minor bugs I've encountered in multiplayer, everything seems to work as you'd expect. It's got a great amount of depth without overstaying its welcome, perfect for a game of this genre. Good solo, better with friends!

With an unaccounted for 275 hours when this was Epic exclusive, I've now played over 300 hours in both this game and the original. I've found that this game does what a lot of sequels wish they could, offering a game experience that matches the tone and feel of the first, while offering a new and interesting angle. Darkest Dungeon 2 does this really well.

The biggest change from the first game is trading out town management for in-depth party mechanics and equipment considerations, which makes sense considering the more rogue-like style of this game. While the experience can often at times feel a bit bloated with all its layered mechanics, some feeling less necessary to the enjoyment of gameplay than others I do feel rewarded for taking the time to properly manage and take advantage of all of them. If you liked the tone and difficulty of the first game, and are willing to take a good amount of time micro-managing everything to mitigate the innate difficulty, this one's an easy buy.
