An affordable, exciting, and challenging tower defense game with a ton of build variety and unlockables to collect. I usually like having the ability to determine the enemy routing in my TD games, but this one has me hooked!

This might well be the best indie "Pokemon-like" on the market, but with the spirit of an old school RPG. It solved one of the classic problems of all monster taming games: what if you really like a monster, but it evolves into something you don't? Enter Hybrid forms that alter the physical makeup of every monster that (often) vibe with each of the five types: Brutes, Malicious, Unstable, Relentless, and Will. This is in addition to the Base form, which is also one of those types, meaning that each monster has six total designs for you to choose from, and another six on top of those if it has an evolution or special fusion (and some even have both!).

I've encountered many a monster that just wasn't my style, only to fuse it and find out it has a fantastic hybrid design. I usually don't get into breeding mechanics in these kind of games, but I've really enjoyed chaining fusions to build my own dream team of wild beasties. In some monster tamers I struggle to find even a full team of creatures I really like, but here you will be truly spoiled for choice.

The early towns are a bit rough, with some repeating dialogue among NPCs, but once you leave the first little region I almost never encountered any NPCs without unique dialogue, and what they had to say was typically valuable (or at least interesting) information. I've enjoyed the story so far, and I genuinely don't think it's "too edgy" or trying too hard just because death is a possibility in the narrative.

Overall, if you have any love for this subgenre of RPG at all, you'd be doing yourself a disservice to not give this game a try.

A truly great RPG with a narrative that, while not the most original in content, was executed with great skill. The English voice cast did an amazing job, and as I watch the credits roll I already find myself missing its eclectic cast of characters. I personally enjoyed the combat, so much so that I wish there had been more of it! If you're looking for an RPG with a lot of meat, heart, and soul, you can't go wrong with this one.

I went into this game with absolutely no expectations, so imagine my surprise when Ground Zero wound up being perhaps the best homage to classic Capcom survival horror titles to date, without just being a 1:1 copy of any of them. On top of that, it features as much, if not more content than even modern AAA horror titles. I played far from optimally for my first run (Hard difficulty), and got graded accordingly at the end (E...feels like it's been awhile since a horror game actually had some tough grading), but I feel like the average first playthrough will still be around 15-20 hours.

Beating the game once also unlocks three more difficulty options, ramping up enemy aggression, reducing healing capacity, and removing autosaves, as well as a full blown time attack mode where you play as one of three characters with their own loadouts, racing against the clock through familiar levels for points. The game also has separate combat and puzzle difficulties, which is always a nice feature.

There are numerous unlockable outfits and cosmetics, with the first outfit unlocking if you complete the training from the main menu; good if you're not a huge fan of the default clothing. It's also a complete tutorial level that lets you run around the HQ lobby and gun ranges, which is a welcome surprise.

There are RE3-style choices to make periodically throughout the game, with the most substantial one being a decision to go to either a Hospital (more medical serums, used to upgrade stats, and a corrosive knife) or Police Station (more weapons early and a charging electrical knife). However, I felt it was a bit of an underutilized mechanic by the end. I would have liked to see one more split choice before the end, perhaps choosing between the University and making the Zoo a more complex level with its own new enemy type ala Outbreak. It's still a nice feature for repeat playthroughs.

The plot wasn't overly complex, but I was surprised at how much I came to like the twin protagonists. The dynamic between their more by-the-book and by-the-heart philosophies lead to some heated conversations and amusing banter, without being too overbearing.

The fixed camera was often utilized to great effect, with interesting angles and sneaky enemy placement keeping the tension high. You can also find a scope attachment that allows any gun to switch to first person view for more precise aiming. You can also still use the game's "critical shot" mechanic, which lets you time a button press to one-tap most regular enemies, while in scoped view.

The game offers both classic tank controls and more modern controls. I used tank controls, but it's nice to have the option for those not overly familiar with the genre's classics. Manually aiming can be a bit finicky, but it's also mostly unnecessary, as you can lock on and switch targets with a button press. I didn't have too much issue with it, though aiming defaulting to the nearest enemy sometimes made it tricky to switch to shooting environmental hazards like barrels in the heat of combat.

On the topic of performance, I only had one crash in my 20+ hour playthrough, and only noticed some fps issues on a couple screens that tried for some unorthodox moving camera angles. I do think there could stand to be some better optimization here though.

Enemy designs are appropriately gruesome, with twitching movements and strange growths and (most importantly) incredibly distinctive and unsettling noises. There's decent variety, though I would have liked to see a couple more types, especially in the Zoo.

I would say that the pacing does hitch a bit post University, and like even official Resident Evil titles the "lab" equivalent isn't my favorite bit, but given the amount of ground our protagonists have to cover I for the most part didn't really get the sense of "padding".

I could gush about this game all day, so I'll cut the review here. For me this easily stands tall among the other indie horror greats like Tormented Souls, Signalis, and Crow Country. 100% recommended for any long-time fan of the genre.

A gripping survival horror game in classic style that did not disappoint. There is a stronger emphasis on puzzles and exploration than combat, but the concept of enemies visible only by their shadows was just so excellent. It's a game that requires thoughtfulness and thoroughness, and I was quite pleased whenever I realized a solution to an apparent dead end. The sound design was also fantastic! I would wholeheartedly recommend this to fans of the genre.

Before I Go is an unapologetically difficult but remarkably fair precision platformer with wonderful visual style and atmosphere. There is a story (that mostly went over my head), but gameplay is king here. Controls are impeccable, movement feels smooth and both enemy and obstacle hitboxes are very precise. I did not encounter any bugs during my playtime.

Your arsenal consists of a stasis field, projectile shield, rapid-fire blasts, long range laser, explosive missiles, charge shots, and an arcing blade attack. All of them feel very easy to weave into your platforming, which will often prove necessary against the game's dangerous enemies. At the start you have very little margin for error with taking hits, but by the mid-game you should have more than enough health (temporary or otherwise) to serve as padding for your mistakes.

I may go back in and comb the map some more to find the handful of collectibles I missed, but I just wanted to gush a little about my experience with this game first. I can wholeheartedly recommend it to any fan of the genre, especially those looking for a little more Metroid in their -vanias.

A wonderfully charming with a lot of heart. Controls are perfect, the map is fun to navigate, and there is plenty of challenge to be had for those interested. It made me nostalgic for a time I'm not sure ever really existed...but I remember the joy and wonder the animated film Adventures in Slumberland brought me. It is truly a marvel that this game could be so radically different in nearly every way, yet tap the same wellspring of playful whimsy. Thank you devs for allowing us to experience your dream.

If you're at all interested in Soulslikes, Tombwater is a worthy entry into the genre. The exploration was top notch and genuinely rewarding; there are so many spells and guns and weapons I never got around to using, but there's certainly an arsenal for everyone. I would have liked to see a few things explained more clearly, but perhaps I'll find out in the sequel (hopefully)!

Grime 2 is the Silksong to Grime 1's Hollow Knight: a more mobile protagonist, a massive world brimming with challenges and secrets, an arsenal of tools, and a much larger and improved cast of characters. It's setting becomes ever more compelling with each new entry, with alien vistas and cultures inspiring awe and a desire to learn more.

The difficulty and learning curve of the game is quite excellent, with each new area tutorializing its mechanics and newly acquired movement abilities before throwing you into the deep end, and the further you go, the more the game mixes these mechanics into the general platforming. Combat likewise ramps up at an even pace, with some basic enemies having movesets more varied than early bosses. And wow, the bosses! Some of them are quite challenging, though only a couple were what I would call "unfair".

The Mold system is interesting; by the end of the game you'll have six slots assigned to two weapons that can be assigned with either abilities absorbed from enemies, cast using renewable paint, or spells with limited uses per rest (though you can upgrade their uses with some exploration). I didn't really click with any of the enemy molds, but the spells are incredibly varied, from homing projectiles and weapon buffs to shockwave-creating bells and exploding spears. I think my only complaint about Molds is that in the late game almost no enemies can be absorbed, so there's a pretty sizable stretch of play without new abilities to play with, while you can keep finding new spells right to the ending.

There is quite a bit of weapon variety for accommodating different playstyles, whether you want to get in close and personal with a big nasty hammer or keep your distance with poisonous shuriken or longbows. Every weapon has a unique rechargeable ability, so even weapons with similar movesets can feel very different in practice.

For those of you who didn't care for certain Soulslike mechanics in the first game like Stamina, you'll be happy to hear it was removed for the sequel. Instead you have a "Force bar" that empties with every attack or dodge, and above a certain threshold, all of your attacks deal tremendously more damage. This encourages the player to attack with rhythm instead of blindly mashing, but also allows you to do so if you just need that quick bit of additional damage. Likewise, you can always dodge, even when your Force bar is empty!

The game does have some rough edges, but nothing so fundamental that they could not be smoothed out with further updates; the occasional strange hitbox or misread wall dash was not enough to ruin my enjoyment.

All in all, Grime 2 may well be the perfect sequel I didn't know I wanted. If you haven't played the first game, I can wholeheartedly recommend it as well! I can't wait to see what the devs have in store for future updates, and hopefully a third game!
