After finishing the game, I'd say it's worth the base price if you love the franchise like I do and have to have it now - otherwise wait for a sale.

Do NOT buy the deluxe edition, it just gives you blatantly the best gear for nothing, and you don't even get to use it most of the time. That said, keep in mind that it is extremely story forward - so not a lot of exploring or free-form game play (if any at all really) to be had. Story was good though, game play was fun, and the characters were (mostly) compelling. Not the Mafia of old, but I'd give it a 7.5. I'll definitely be going back through the first and second again.

It's everything I thought it could be, like stepping 20 years into the past. This is how I saw it then, so glad I get to see it again now.

It's great. This is my first Monster hunter, and looking back at the series I can say that the Focus stance is a game changer (ie making it playable at all). Story is good, anyone saying otherwise is a monster hunter veteran who just wants to get straight to the bonking. Optimization for PC is weak, including the controls. Once you get used to it and compromise a bit on your graphics settings you're fine.

Incredible. In early access and it's already the greatest ARPG ever made in my opinion.

Pros:
-Devs seem dedicated to making a great game, not more money. This is huge. Your $30 to gain entry to this title comes with $30 worth of in game currency. Which is used exclusively for cosmetics or stash tabs. All of the packs are like this, and it will be free to play on release like it's predecessor. Additionally, updates 3 days after launch are out fixing many of the initial concerns from the community. A good sign for things to come I hope.

-Content. I already have over the quoted "25 hours" for the campaign, and I'm only just now into Act 3. There are 3 acts, and then for EA you play those again on a harder "cruel" difficulty (eventually to be replaced with 3 additional acts). And then there's countless hours of endgame content.

-Customization. It's insane. You have a class (of which 6 of I think 12 are in ea), which determines your starting position on the passive tree, beginning attributes, and suggested weapons/skills. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO STICK TO THAT. You can follow the branching path anywhere on the tree from your starting point and pick any skills you have the attributes to take. The skills are gems that you slot into your character. You can further augment how that skill works using another kind of gem, and then there are auras that trigger passively when conditions are met. All that before you consider gear and all the customization that brings to the table.

-Graphics. Not much to say here but if it matters to you, the graphics are very good.

-The game does not hold your hand and will let you fail. It treats you like an adult, and it's refreshing to see in 2024.

Cons (as of early access 12/9/24):
-It's early access as of writing a this, as such things can change, there are bugs, and some interactions don't work as expected.

-Instability. I've had crashes as have others. To be expected and I expect these will be fixed as time goes on. My recommendation is to cap your FPS if you're having studdering or crashes. It's an ARPG, you don't need 120+ FPS anyway (by the way, you should do this for any new title, remember New World cooking Nvidia cards??).

-Difficulty. I like that it's difficult, it was one of my pros. However, some people will be turned off by this. It asks you to learn the systems and learn the attack patterns of bosses (or over level yourself as needed to compensate). The game drops things that might not be for you, encouraging trading or crafting. Nothing is given, everything is earned. If you like that great, otherwise I'd watch some more gameplay before diving into EA, or try it on 1.0 release when it's free.

Disappointing. Lots of promising things about this title, and I really wanted to like it. End game seems interesting (though I never got there), skills seem fun, leveling seems engaging, and crafting is apparently some of the best arpgs have to offer.

However, the game is ultimately stuck in the past. No WASD movement? No built in dash mechanic? No character creator? These things might not matter to a classic arpg enjoyer but it sure feels bad to someone entering the genre when things like POE 2 are just on the horizon, WASD is available in d4 and even immortal (you know, the primarily phone based game??), and there are crazy other games in awesome settings like inquisitor martyr.

Even if you wanted a classic arpg play experience, go play poe 1, it's free.

No hate to these devs, it just is disappointing to see such a cool concept held back by carpel tunnel inducing and lazy game design.

It's the greatest looter shooter in existence at time of writing and nothing else even comes close. The game play is a blast from humble beginnings to the godlike minmaxing glory that is the end game. The graphics hold up despite its age. It's constantly getting updates. The story, while unorthodox, strange even, is amazing. The monatization is reasonable, only containing cosmetics or convenience, all of which you can still get for free if you want because the premium currency is tradeable in-game with other players.

If you were on the fence, or if you like games like Destiny, then try this, give it a solid try, I doubt you'll ever look back.

Edit: Sony seems to have backtracked on the whole PSN issue, which is what the community wanted. So... for now I'm going to begrudgingly revise my review to "Recommends" because I think the devs are looking out for the community despite their unfortunate publishers and because I think it is a fun game. I'm keeping my original review below though and reserve the right to change my mind at the earliest sign of tomfoolery by Sony.

:That said, if you live in a country that can't link or create a PSN account, I still wouldn't buy it because the second this all blows over there's a good chance they do it all over again and you literally won't be able to play the game you bought.:

Original review: "First the Kernel level anticheat and now requiring a linking to PSN on this PC game? Yeah, it's only going to get worse. I'd stay away from it."

Frankly, it has outdated game-play systems that feel out of place in this style of game, particularly one of this difficulty.

-If you like difficult games the difficulty itself won't be a problem, but constantly going back for repairs is dumb, and serves no purpose other than to unessarily frustrate players. It's bad game design.

-Cooking feels weird, but it's not too intrusive. I just don't like feeling like I have to use consumables in my game. Chalk that up to Skyrim brain ("I might need this later though...")

-No respec? Really? Or at least not one that is readily apparent. This is the one that hurts the most I think. If you want to use a different weapon, you better hope you put enough points into it's skill. Oh, got a legendary weapon? Too bad it's for strength you stupid wizard, etc.

I'd be remiss to not mention that it feels a bit unoptimized, but I'm going to say that's probably going to be fixed as early access continues so your mileage may vary.

Combat is fluid, I'd call it good. It's going to take you some time to become comfortable with it, but that's probably part of the charm. To be fair, I did not fully explore this aspect before refunding so that's as far as I'll comment on it.

On a more subjective note: The character design is just ugly. The rest of the game is gorgeous, but the giant disproportionate arms have always rubbed me the wrong way (think V-Rising except a bit more egregious).

Is it scummy that CAPCOM has included micro-transactions in this single player title? Yes. Should they be punished monetarily for it? Absolutely. Is this a good game? It's really good.

24 hours in at time of writing, and I can say I've had a good time. A hallmark of a good game to me is that when I have to stop playing it, I continue thinking about it, and this has that. The combat is superb, the effects are fantastic, and the skills are interesting. The story, while trope-ey is... fine. Don't pick it up for the story, pick it up for monster go smash.

There are some bugs, and it is poorly optimized. You will need a beefy PC, and even then you'll probably crash out a few times. It saves often enough this has not been too frustrating for me yet.

Hopefully the damage is done, to CAPCOM's wallet, and you can pick it up. TBH, you can probably wait for a sale unless your friends are playing it and/or you have some serious FOMO. 7.5/10, 8.5 if and when they optimize it better and remove any and all micro-transactions.

How could I not recommend this? As it is right now in early access it's pretty much Warband with better graphics and a few new features, and who wouldn't want that? It's unfinished, sure. Balance and AI issues abound and the main quest just kind of cuts off as do the total 4 voice lines in the whole game, but the quests have always been the smallest part of a Mount & Blade game anyway and is bound to be fixed soon because the developers are hard at work pumping an update a day (as of writing) out to it's dedicated fan base. Warband is my all time favorite game, and Bannerlord is sure to surpass it once complete!
