Su nombre en inglés proviene de las palabras inglesas combat (combate) por su tipo lucha o de commotion (conmoción, alboroto), en referencia a los ruidos que genera con sus escamas y de la palabra hawaiana mo'o (dragón).
Su nombre en japonés, Jyararanga, procede de ジャラジャラ jarajara (onomatopeya de un tintineo) y がらんがらん garangaran (onomatopeya de un sonido metálico).
