tl;dr A boring collection of mechanics from better games; an open world survival crafter where you are unable to change the world beyond the tiny borders of you home zone.

It's extremely pretty, a gorgeous treat for the eyes; but other than "it's functional" I don't have much else to say that isn't negative.
There is no real drive to go out into the world, nothing pushes you - nothing tracks you down or hunts you. All dangers in the world sit in their little spawn area and wait for you to come to the them.
You have no real control over the world beyond your limited number of home zones, the shrines. You can level up and get more, bigger zones - but don't expect to be doing megaprojects or changing the world the way you would other voxel based games.
Everything resets and respawns whenever you restart the game. Nothing is dynamic or random, so you'll rarely be surprised once you know where an enemy is. Once you find a wolf, that wolf will always be there when it respawns. If you need of a resource, you can just restart the game and all the nodes and veins will be where you found them last.

This makes for a fairly dead, overly-safe feeling world; and I honestly felt no impetus to go beyond the few hours I played once this became clear.
There are no invasions, no predatory creatures, no dangerous nights or roaming bosses. Literally nothing goes out of it's way to challenge you - you have to go to it.

Having gone and watched youtubers play it, to see if I'm maybe missing something - and no. The world remains passive and unchanging, with no real pressure to ever leave your home or drive you forward in the game beyond narrative quests or ones desire to grind.

Maybe the devs will add more features to the game; it is early access after all, and my opinion could change. At the current price however, there are other games I could have spent the money on, and I might have if a friend didn't ask me to play... and then they didn't even buy the game

Note: Sega effectively launched a new MMO called PSO2: NGS, and used the PSO2 page - because of how they structured it.
Most of the positive reviews on here are going to be for PSO2 - which you can probably play, but understand NGS is nothing like PSO2 outside sharing a franchise.

NGS is suffering a lack of content - it had less than PSO2 classic on launch, and people are trying to defend it because NGS is free to play.
So was PSO2.
They got the combat mechanics down pat, the world is in place - but as far as things to do, like max level (which is supposed to be 60), or end game (which will be at level 60)...

The current 'end game' is socializing in town, sitting the character creator, trying to find an alliance that isn't dead or dying, giving Sega money for cosmetics of questionable value, and waiting for the scheduled hourly boss fight.

Game lacks any serious content - unless you really want to spend money to get loot boxes for cosmetics (the only thing being added right now), don't expect anything until August where we get a partial content update; then October when we get the rest of what was supposed to come in August - and hopefully the autumn mini update.
Don't expect this game to have any major content until sometime in Winter. When in Winter? I atleast did hear any official date from Sega.

Sega is currently delaying content in order to fix the multitudinous bugs in the game - ignore the official twitter account, it's run by a boomer who'd rather post garbage memes rather than keep us updated on anything except gacha and extended maintenance.

The bugs go anywhere from annoying - stutter or freezing on the server side, to hourly urgent quests breaking.
Are you whaling? Good news - a ton of bugs make you look ugly as sin, and changes your skin color too boot - not that you'll know, because everyone but you can see it.
Most cosmetic previews are being rendered at low res for some reason - so you'll have a hard time telling if it's good unless you open your wallet up and get it.

A working auction house ("player shop")? maybe on a good day, and even then, only on ships who's number isn't 1
Rampant goldseller chat spam, which for some reason is zone wide? Enjoy friend, it's yours - no, you can't easily block them from chat, you have to play a game of hide and seek with them for that! (good luck, they like to go out of bounds)

4/10, The gameplay and combat is absolutely amazing.
I have developed a crippling gambling addiction, and wish I'd rolled on the JP servers instead of Global.
If they can add content before most of the player base quits and doesn't come back - it might be worth it.
Otherwise Sega will probably cancel the Global servers and Phantasy Star goes back to being a Japanese only franchise.

Great game, but lacking many classic monsters such as the crab family of previous gens. Variety has been creeping back to the series over time, both with newer monsters alongside familiar faces.
With the announcement of the final content patch however, it looks like we'll have to wait for the next MHW to see more.
The game brought a number of quality of life updates, and the change to large seamless hunting grounds is a nice change. The seamless nature of the maps comes along with vastly larger areas to fight in - with some parts of a map spanning multiple levels. This in turn plays into the nature of combat changes in the game - much more mobile, and with a variety of ways to leverage verticality from pluging attacks, mounting, using the claw etc. Even simple slopes offer a change in fighting moves, offering context sensitive moves for every weapon.

My one criticism of the game however, is the relatively short support life of Capcom's second foray into monster hunter on PC. Granted the game is multi-platform, and available on consoles; given the timing, I'm given to speculate whether this is due in part to the beginning of a new console life cycle.
Comparatively, Monster Hunter Online, a Chinese exclusive MMO by Tencent in cooperation with Capcom, has had ongoing support and continuous content releases for about 7 years now.

Why it is we can't see remotely the level of content support globally is unclear - but I would have a hard time seeing eye to eye with anyone who's had the privilege to exclusively access a Monster Hunter game for so long, and then decided to complain about Monster Hunter World this late into it's release.

MHW is well worth the play through, and starting sooner than later will ensure you have an easier time experiencing co-operative play, essential for getting the most out of the Monster Hunter experience.
