Take the time to configure and understand the controls and it's a very fun old school arcade mech shooter. Too bad it's not for sale anymore, I guess a lot of people complained because it wasn't easy enough to pick up and play. Games of this type usually take some time. Set the option to lock shots while attacking, which will streamline the controls a bit. Mechs are clunky.

Nice graphics. cool idea, but terrible tuning leading to a frustrating grindfest. Many mistakes will back you into a corner, making you unable to earn coins or progress, at which point, you might as well die and start over. The "meta" of the game is a result of poor tuning as well, as your strategy becomes to not build anything, and just spam archers. More work went into the gorgeous art assets than into playtesting, and the end result is a game that looks fun, but totally isn't. Also the music is great. I would not recommend paying more than $5 for this game, nor would i recommend it to anyone who values their time and just wants to play a chill game for a couple hours. KTC is addictive, yet completely unsatisfying.

THANK YOU HIRANYON FOR YOUR BEAUTIFUL GIFT
I have the old Japanese version of this game and have been playing it for years. It can take awhile to get into for sure, you need to learn your subweapons to play well. You won't have much success with relying only on your standard straight shot. The multiple and diverse weapon setups are a large part of the fun of this game, so dig in, experiment with the different characters, and find your favorite playstyle.
The bullet patterns in HELLSINKER are varied and gorgeous, there are several bullet types with unique attributes and come in different sizes. Visually this is one of the most stunning danmaku games, alongside Alternative Sphere. You'll really need to see the game in motion to fully appreciate it.
Cutscenes are very simple and fully skippable, but can provide a welcome rest from the intense gameplay.
HELLSINKER is chock full of unlockables and secrets, and the game will not hold your hand in finding them.
The music is excellent and goes a long way to set the mood. Most of it is a bit of dark, industrialized techno, with some calmer, pretty tracks and orchestral mixed in. The later boss battle anthems will help push your adrenaline to the max. I've spent many nights with my headphones blasting, my joystick hands covered in sweat and my eyes glued to the screen, scanning, praying I'll survive to see the next level. All the elements come together to provide a cohesive experience that is truly unlike any other.
All in all, HELLSINKER is a very worthwhile experience once you've learned to perform with the various weapon systems available. You'll be compelled not just to cope with the basic mechanics, but to master them.
I and many other players have been waiting literally years for this game to be released widely, stateside, and with a full English translation. It is my great honor to recommend this game to you, and I hope that like me, you will remember HELLSINKER for the rest of your life. Thanks again to developer Tonnor/Hiranyon, for offering his psychotic masterpiece to the world.
KEEP YOUR DIGNITY.

No button remaps in options. Decent GFX options but often graphical glitches. I can only get a glitchfree windowed borderless mode by using 3rd-party software. Looks like they should have held this one in Early Access longer. I will have to play more to see if it's worth the trouble, as I've not touched it since its official release, but it looks about the same. Thank you for reading my review and not whining in the comments! If you love the game good! I hope they update it so I can love it too!

"what we think is one of the most full featured, fun and accessible SHMUPs in the galaxy."
-dev notes on TURBO update

Well, let's speak on full-featured shootemups.
SGSEXT lacks a replay mode, a TATE mode, a practice mode, and a frame counter. Pretty much all these should be expected in a modern vertical PC STG.
It also lacks remappable controls and seperate volume options for music and sound effects. All PC games should have this.
Since the dev update makes it clear that this is the super mega final version forever, I assume none of these things will ever be added, making the above statement seem pretty ridiculous. When STG players think "full-featured", "Endless Mode" is likely the last thing on their mind. Study what actual habitual players of your game want, not just the casual indie game bundle shoppers.

Some of the music is pretty cool and most of the art is much better than the gameplay.
The gameplay is fun enough for a few playthroughs, but suffers from poor tuning. The first boss is too hard, the final stage is too easy, etc. The FINAL WEAPON is annoying to play with infinite lives(AKA standard difficulty). Infinite lives on a TLB? Go ahead and give me a game over, I stopped after 20 tries and had to turn the game off. Merciful death in shootemups is actually a good thing, the game is supposed to boot you out if you suck too hard so you can go do something else for awhile. Infinite lives just means you get to bash your head against the wall or give up manually. Modern game devs are quick to dispose of antiquated systems, while missing the reasons they work.

The respawning health system and bullet time seem like a crutch for poor tuning if you ask me.
This game supports GRAZING, yet it does not have a BRAKE button to slow your ship. These days, that seems pretty silly, especially with bullets this fast. Bullet time doesn't count, it's limited-use and is a lazy mechanic in almost ANY game. The fact that games market it as a feature is ridiculous, it doesn't take an amazing programmer to make a game run slower. Most danmaku games will give you a brake if grazing is expected or if bullet speed/density is as high as it is in this game.

I ignored this game for a long time and eventually got it on sale. Many many months later, I've only booted it a few times. I don't think it's as bad as some players do. Mostly it's a generic western indie retro STG that, like most similar games, fail to offer much besides pretty bullets and constant explosions. There are dozens of better shooting games on Steam and most of them were made in Japan. Western indies just don't understand these kinds of games, and most players, if they haven't been paying attention to the last 20 years of imports, wouldn't even know what they were missing. With that in mind, here are some other titles I feel better deserve your attention:

Diadra Empty
Gundemonium Collection
eXceed 2nd/3rd
RefleX
RefRain: Prism Memories
QP Shooting: Dangerous
Crimzon Clover
Eschatos
Mushihimesama
Raiden IV
Star Saviours

This program has some incredibly frustrating idiosyncracies, but also a strong core featureset, and a lot of potential.

First, am I the first to say this? The chunky 8bit stylization wastes an ungodly amount of screen real estate in the GUI. The minute I saw it in the trailer I thought it looked gaudy, gimmicky, tacky, unnecessary and wasteful. I'm trying to draw some basic sprites in an efficient interface, not pretend I'm using an ultra lo-res monitor with an 1980s microcomputer. Lets keep in mind I paid for every inch of panel space I have, and if a program just throws it away, I'm basically losing money. I also finds this stylization highly distracting, though that seems to have been the opposite of its developer's intention.

Intention vs. Implementation:
The first problem is that it wastes so much space.
Another problem is the icons become cryptic. It was very hard to figure out very basic things about the program, which doesn't yet have a huge community online do draw knowledge from.
Here's the big one, something the dev probly didn't consider.
This interface looks *nothing* like any productivity program I have running on my computer.
And herein lies the big issue, I am constantly having my eyes pulled to the GUI elements looming in my peripheral with their (as of 2016 at least) highly sylized blocky pixels. That bold, jagged, upscaled unicode font is constantly screaming at my eyes to look at it.
I would love to just have this look like my normal computer, which is running in Classic mode, AKA it looks basically like Windows 98.
I edit video in a program that doesn't look like a piece of glass candy. My eyes ignore the UI and focus on the content I'm making. It's lovely. Importantly, the interface doesn''t *match the content*, so my perception never blurs the lines.

There are some serious concerns I have with the default layout. I was unable to find any way to change it on Google and the program does not make anything about itself obvious. I was finally able to change it thanks to developer response(thank you), and I can finally get to setting up a workflow.

Overall the program performs well, hasn't crashed, and the thing that has frustrated me the most is that these issues stood in the way of me using a program that does have basically all the features I need.

UI scalling has steep gradations only. Everything is too tiny or too huge.
Same with zooming in/out. Going from 100-200% in a single scroll-whell step is not very helpful.
Preferences menu will hopefully see some expansion in general.
a "Dark" skin would also be a godsend, as with all productivity software.

I have only used this program for a couple hours. I will likely update this review with more notes once I hit hour 40.

It's actually pretty ghetto that you can't draw anything in the program.
