TL;DR: If you like Super Monkey Ball, puzzle games, or games with big speed run potential, get this game. It is, all things considered, the best that Super Monkey Ball has ever felt, and there are very few complaints of merit I have about this game. If you have this, you do not need to spend hundreds of dollars or break the law to play Super Monkey Ball 1 or 2.

Now for those who want to read...

Context/Credentials "Why Should I Even Read This?"
I've got about 13 hours into the game now and I've completed the "main story" mode as well as a couple of the challenge mode difficulties, and played around with all of the party games to at least some extent, so I think I now have enough experience with the game to give it a proper review.
I spent 25 dollars on the Digital Deluxe edition when it was on sale.
I have recently (within the last 6 months) played through Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2, unmodded, on their original hardware, the Gamecube, as originally intended by the developers, so I have recent experience with the games this game is based on at the time of this review.
I have been playing specifically Super Monkey Ball 2 since its original release on Gamecube.
I will hope to answer all of the questions that I originally had before buying this so that hopefully yours will be answered too.

What is this?
I would consider this game most accurately to be a remaster of SMB 1 and 2 combined into one game. I think it is largely superior to the old games but I do have some minor gripes. It's setup for local multiplayer and has no synchronous online functionality. You can use remote play together through Steam but to my knowledge the game has no idea such a thing is happening and it's only able to do this through Steam. There is asynchronous "ghost" racing for speed runs and an online leaderboard.

What's the deal with Monkey Target?
Nothing. It's fine. People are complaining because it IS DIFFERENT FEELING than the old game and they have to actually learn new skills. It's easier to fly in my opinion, I think it feels great and I prefer it over the originals. You just have to give about 5-10% stick rearward to fly level instead of it basically coasting for you. WAAAAH NEW THING BAD NEW THING ALWAYS BAD! WHY HAVE TO LEARN???

So what's wrong?
I think the music is generally inferior. Sometimes the new music is better but I think it lacks character a lot of times.
I don't like that Challenge Mode doesn't have multiplayer but this is usually done by passing off the controller anyway, so it is not a huge deal. Party games, the important part, are still 1-4 player capable.
I don't like the female or male narrators (female for puzzle stages, male for party games) voices as much as the original.
Monkey Bowling feels dumbed down. It's playable but the lane feels too short and spin feels too strong.

So what's DIFFERENT?
The physics feel different, I think they're better than the original games, but they are DIFFERENT. Your muscle memory will NOT translate 1:1 and you will need to re-learn.
There are some minor changes to some of the stages presumably for balance with the physics, and to remove the AV logo branding from those stages. The stages remain mechanically similar and are perfectly playable.
"Play Points" are replaced with banana coins but function much the same way. Spend them to get special modes and some cosmetic stuff.
You can play with other controllers instead of being forced to use a Gamecube controller (which is a neutral because GC controllers are very good but so are Xbox Elites so... I do miss the forward gate on the GC controllers, though, hard to go perfectly straight on an Xbox controller)

So what's better then?
YanYan is adorable and I love her.
Monkey Target is better. Fight me.
Monkey Boat is VASTLY better. I can't even begin to describe how much I hated it on Gamecube. It's fun now.
All the party games are unlocked out of the box.
I generally prefer the newer character art styles.
HD textures and such, looks amazing.
You can change the camera independently of moving with the secondary stick
Challenge mode no longer has limited lives. Instead it is much more of a marathon and will keep track of your cumulative time.
The challenge mode and practice mode are setup super well for speed running.
Lots of controls customization and options expected of a modern game.
I can play with my friends over the internet using Remote Play Together.

So is it a good value?
I think it's a good value in a vacuum. I wouldn't personally pay full price for the Digital Deluxe edition but 30 for the base game when not on sale is an acceptable price. 25 for the DD edition, great deal. 35 for a physical copy on Switch right now, also good.
The real value is when you consider what you'd be paying to otherwise play SMB 1 or 2. To do this legally, you are going to be spending ~30-50 dollars apiece on a used game disk then running it on an emulator, minimum. If you want to do it in the living room, you are buying a console and controllers, used, for another 100+ dollars. In this context, this game is an absolute steal.

Summary:
I think this is the best that Super Monkey Ball has ever felt or looked, and I think it's a good game for 30 dollars and you should get it. If it's on sale, for sure do it.

I thoroughly love this game. The story is why you play it. This is a game that knows how to tell a narrative. Beyond that, though, the game is good to look at, and it always flows well. This is more, in my opinion, of what a role playing game ACTUALLY is supposed to be. You play a ROLE in the game. Your role is not about getting an XP bar to the next level, you're a guy trying to cope with emotional trauma in his own way.
I enjoy these types of games, especially when they are both visually appealing AND have a captivating story.

I really can't find any more criticisms besides I wish there was more. When it was over, both the first time I played it and the second time, I wished so hard that there was more. I wanted to meet the lady on the other end of the radio.

This game takes place over the course of a summer, with the prologue taking place over a lifetime. Even only playing for a few hours, it doesn't feel rushed. This feels more like a movie that you have an active part in, and I love every minute of it.

I want to say this might be one of the only games I've ever played that's made me cry. And not tears of frustration like some games. Genuine, heartfelt tears of emotional investment in the story. I'm actually getting a bit watery writing this up now.

The game made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me feel alone, it made me feel helpless at times, it gives you the feeling of the total impermanence of everything. It makes you fearful for the characters, it imparts wonder and suspicion as the story unfolds. There truly is not a dull moment in the game.

This isn't even to mention all the theories you could come up with about the game, I won't get into them as it's not appropriate for a review and might spoil the story for others, but there are certainly some tantalizing assumptions one could make about the main character and the story that make the game more interesting.

I think I got it for the full price of 20 bucks, it's worth that, but if you're seeing this on sale, like right now during the winter sale it's 4.99, absolutely it's worth it. In fact, I think I might go ahead and pick it up for my friend who has it on his wishlist as well.

Summation:
A short, beautiful, emotional masterpiece that will make you feel something.

"One of the most beautiful ways you could possibly spend 5 hours."

I have played through the story of this game and I feel I have enough time in to offer up a review. I will be structuring it in sections which will be: Strengths, Weaknesses, Value, then Summation.

Strengths:
-By far the best part of this game is the artwork. It's like playing a painting. The art is fresh looking, well done, and absolutely gorgeous. I feel like you could take a screenshot from literally anywhere in the game and it would look beautiful. Colors are vibrant, the music is great, sound design is absolutely top notch. The sound design and art direction for this game are spot on and the whole thing is just an absolute feast for the senses, which I appreciate over almost anything in these types of games. Yeah, that's the best way I can put it, it's like playing a painting. Beautiful.
-The physical parts of the game feel expansive, even for the short story that it is. The art direction was done in such a way to create open, spanning worlds that feel huge and infinite.
-I like how they modified some animals to be "not quite" real animals. They look like they BELONG in the world, and fill their role. I guess the best way I can describe how this is and how I appreciate it is that "the game uses the IDEA of a type of animal, rather than trying to put every individual species in the game." I like this approach.
-Every animal feels unique. They are all fun to play and fill a role in the world.
-All the animals are adorably modeled and animated.
-The best part of this game for me, is running through the various worlds and areas as different animals, making this into more or less a type of 3D platformer where you shapeshift for changing circumstances.
-The game flows well. I rarely found myself getting stuck for very long. It is also very gracious with hints and nudges along the way to keep you on track.

Weaknesses:
-I did not find the story to be exceptionally captivating. It was a nice story, there isn't anything wrong with it, but I didn't feel immersed in the storyline, or that there was anything new or different about it. It was sufficient and filled its role, but did not blow me away. It had some nice twists and it was a sweet story but I didn't find myself truly wound up in the character's personalities. What this game perhaps has in visual and auditory beauty, it somewhat lacks in depth of story.
-I found the lack of facial animation on the wolf to be somewhat unnerving. The body was very well animated, as are the other animals in the game, but the eyes of the wolf in all the cutscenes kind of threw me off and I found myself focusing on the fact that it never blinks rather than getting emotionally invested in the story. Even some minor movement of the eyes would have made the wolf more expressive. I understand that real animals don't have expressions, but that's the beauty of games. This really only applies to the face, as the body animations were very good. HOWEVER, this criticism is not to say anything negative about the model itself. I am totally in love with the overall design, just like all the other animals, that part falls right in line with the rest of the game.
-Some of the scripting/dialogue chosen for the "lost ember" is not my favorite. Overall, I appreciate its presence and it lends itself well to highlighting the game's crucial moments. However, I would have appreciated some of the hints to be a bit more vague, especially during cutscenes. This may have been some of my problem with the story. I don't even mind that they're narrated with the lost ember's voice, but some of the choice of dialogue seems to always describe what you can already see happening, or doesn't allow my mind to process it. It's hard to explain exactly how I would improve it but I think my problem is that the dialogue seems forced and not natural, as if the lost ember has done this already a few times and is trying its hardest to make it seem like this is a totally new thing, but the way it's written suggests false surprise at the cutscenes.
-The voice acting is just OK. I suppose I shouldn't be too harsh as this is not a AAA title, it's a small game made by a small studio. The voice acting just didn't seem to fit the best. This is a minor complaint as it was OK overall.
-The game is too short. I want more. And I mean that in the best way I possibly can. It's so beautiful I didn't want it to end. This is how much I love looking at this game. I wish it was longer or had some more replayability, but after one playthrough I think I am done indefinitely. It took me about 5 hours to get through, and without any more depth to the story or any more worldbuilding to be had, it is now off of my backlog and into more or less of an archive, a memory. A fond memory, but a memory nonetheless.
-I don't find myself compelled to collect all the artifacts or "see all the stuff" - The game contains a system of a few different things you can "collect" - Artifacts, mushrooms, and legendary animals. You encounter them in the world, and best I can tell, that's it. You found the thing. You interacted with the thing. It's now in your encyclopedia, that's it. The story still goes on identically whether you pick up all of them or you pick up none of them or, like me, you pick up about 1/3 of them because they happen to be along the pathway. Now, I'm making an assumption they don't have any real bearing in the game. That assumption is based on the fact that I beat the game and got a credits roll without being prompted or urged to get the items, and was not blocked in my progress by lacking any of them. If they change anything in any way, then it is not obvious to me what that is. Yeah, some of them might be related to your character as it appears in the story, but you the player don't gain any feeling for these items at any point. Since they seem to do nothing but unlock achievements, I am not finding myself compelled to go back and collect all the items for completeness' sake. Perhaps a younger me would be more completist. This would be a totally different story if there was more replayability and the items you collected were useful in some way in that world.
-There is not much replayability. As said above, in my mind this is a sort of "one and done" story. I wish it wasn't, but that's the particular box my brain has put this game into due to what is presented. What would have brought me back longer? I would honestly love, once you complete the game, if there was a sandbox type mode where you could really sit and explore all the different animals and environments. Yes, I know you can re-play chapters, but, you are limited on what animals can exist where - You literally cannot proceed past certain points without certain animals. In the story/during the normal game this is fine, but I would desire a sort of fun sandbox where I could just spend hours soaring around as an eagle or a parrot or swimming as a fish, whatever it is. But such a feature is apparently not implemented in the game. This is okay. I still love the game for what it is.

Value:
-I waited to get this game during the winter sale. I paid 17.99 which I think is just about spot on for how much enjoyment I got out of the game.
-At 30 dollars normal price, I am a bit more hesitant, this does not mean the game is bad, it just lacks replayability for me.

Summation:
-I thoroughly enjoyed the audio visual aspect of this game. It is a truly beautiful game for the senses. I wish it were perhaps a bit more mentally and emotionally stimulating, but it does not entirely disappoint at all in those regards. I hope you do not see the length of my criticisms and get the impression that I did not like the game, because that definitely was not the case. I really enjoyed it overall, and if another game comes out down the line under a similar premise or in the same universe, I'm definitely interested.

Great game whose point is to be not visually stimulating, but psychologically thrilling, and it does that well. The graphics are not the focus of the game but they are absolutely sufficient to tell the story clearly and fill their role as they need to. If you enjoyed the humor and antics of the Portal series, you will enjoy this game. The gameplay mechanics are not as physiologically challenging, there's really not any special timing or puzzles to solve, but the interaction between an all-powerful voice watching your every move and you is the same. The difference being that this game breaks the fourth wall much more readily.

I've played through as many of the endings as I care to discover, and found the rest on a Youtube video. If you have some patience, this game will fulfill perhaps 2-5 hours of play, depending on if you explore every ending. Of course if you decide to ACTUALLY go through with every ending, you need to spend at least 4 hours on one particular ending. I did not do this because I have better things to do.

The artistic value of this game is unmatched, and while, yes, it's beginning to become an old game now at this point, this is right up my alley in one of my favorite genres "psychologically thrilling puzzle games" - Games with a good story are one thing, good puzzle games are another, but there is an intersection of both of them that rarely gets touched, and said genre seems to be one of my favorites. The game makes fun of itself at points, it makes fun of the player, it provides a commentary on the mundane life of your average worker.

This game is not one that challenges your reflexes or paints a beautiful picture, but, it does constantly challenge your curiosity. Your persistence. How many times will you go through the first scene? Will you find all the things the game will let you find? What will you explore? Does everything you touch have a consequence?

Even for being pre-recorded tracks, the narrator feels as if he is talking to you, and you are having a conversation, it breaks the fourth wall in just the right way. Plenty of fun easter eggs and references to find laying around. Minecraft. Portal. Office Space. I'm sure there's others but those are the ones I noticed and the first two are quite obvious.

Great game, if you haven't already played it by now in 2020, do it. I'm going to go so far to call this a classic of its era and genre.

I love this game.
I've been playing Ben's various games since 2007, most notably the hit game Starfighter: Disputed Galaxy. It still today remains one of my favorite games I have ever played.

This is so much more. Everything I loved about the old game is here, and there's loads more to do, loads more to explore, and it feels like it could go on for...Infinity. So far, this has been worth every penny spent on the Kickstarter for me.

I'm not even sure where to start, so I guess I will begin with what this game does extremely well:

- Dogfighting. By far the absolute bread and butter of any of Ben's Starfighter games has always been the dogfighting action. Some may believe that the decision to keep the game's movement restricted to a 2D plane is "limiting" or "over simplified" for space combat, however, once you get into your first real firefight, all of that goes out the window. You're too focused on laying out the enemies to care that there's no "up" or "down" - I say, it isn't needed. Certainly, the fusion of 3D modeling and retro-style planar navigation in game is familiar yet refreshing.

- Weapons. The weapons you had access to in Disputed Galaxy were creative and fun to use. This game takes that and turns it up to 11. Nay, 12. While the vast array of weapons DOES get slimmed down a bit when you consider that many weapons have levels, I promise, you will not be able to choose just one thing that beats all. There is so much variety in the builds you can run on your ships that it might as well be infinite. Teleporting torpedoes, blackout stealth systems, autocannon turrets, big balls of light that chase your enemy, flaming hot cubes of an element known as Xandelevium that set your enemies ablaze, mines that follow you, radioactive nuke torpedoes, plasma relays, lightning bolts, rockets that look and act like bees, laser beams, dumb torpedoes! It's all here! Go wild as you create the most absurd builds possible! It may look like a somewhat stark and bleak game on the surface, but lying just beneath is a whole rabbit hole full of explosive goodies.

- Ships. Oh the ships. There are plenty to choose from, hailing both from Human and Alien (Aralien) design houses. You used to be only able to select one for your race, now you can find ways to pilot both. All of the Disputed Galaxy and Quadrant Wars ships are here and just as good as they used to be if not better, while there have been many more added, and they're quite varied. Ben does an incredible job of making all the ships feel unique, alive almost. There are big, slow, lumbering tanks that can soak up damage for days, and light, nimble craft that can dodge even some torpedoes, while still others are ominous harbringers of sector-wide destruction, turning over the guts of seasoned pilots and greenhorns alike. You will find at least one ship you like, and probably closer to 15.

- Letting you do your own thing. You don't have to be violent. You can be a big herbivore, consuming asteroids and exploring the galaxy if you want. You just need to find the ships that play as you want. There's missions to destroy, and there's missions to collect. There's missions to guard, there's missions to scope things out. Or, you can totally ignore the missions. That's something I love. You don't HAVE to grind away at missions to level up and unlock things. You can earn XP in any number of ways that you feel like doing.

There's a whole several layers on top of these items above, but those core items are the absolute key to what makes this game so enjoyable.

Highly recommend you pick up this game, Ben is a great and responsive dev and you won't be disappointed.

What a great little game.

Full disclosure: I paid full price for this game at the time I bought it ($19.99) and learned of it through my discovery queue. I'm writing this with 4.8 hours on the record.

This game is so fun. Think Minecraft meets Spore space stage meets what No Man's Sky should have been. The controls are VERY easy to pick up, and are very smoothand intuitive, if not for taking a bit of getting used to as they are sort of odd. But certainly nothing you cannot learn.

I've only unlocked some basic stuff so far, but I'm having all kinds of fun. It's certainly a very simple game, but that's the joy of it, I feel. It's simple yet complex. It makes no promises to anyone and puts you immediately into the action. Very minimal game. The low poly graphics of the terrain are pleasantly done and it's a pretty small game to download.

There's no real enemies I can think of so far, just some passive flora that seem to act in self defense if perturbed. Oh, and the windstorms. Bit scary there as you get hundreds of cubes falling/flying from the sky.

It's a forgiving game, it's fun to play, and there's not even that many bugs for being in pre-alpha.

Not that many bugs at all really.

Few things I'm not a fan of, but none of them are game-breaking, more, minor improvements. Sometimes the terrain editing bugs out a bit and leaves artifacts if you're not careful. That I'm sure the developers are looking at. The rover controls are....Weird. They're WASD but it's always relative to the camera. So, if you are kind of looking at the rover, and you're wanting to back up cause you're against a wall, you'd hit S right? Well, no, S will keep driving you into the wall if you're looking backward. Really weird and I guess it could work over time, it's definitely something that'll need some getting used to. The only other thing that kind of bothers me is there's quite a bit of choppiness during transitions, but as an 8350 CPU user, that might be my own fault. And again, it's early alpha.

Other than that I really can't think of any improvements, maybe more will come as I discover more so we'll see there.

Honestly, the biggest thing I can appreciate in this game is the work that is put into the game play, not necessarily the graphics. The graphics are NOT unpleasant, in fact it's refreshing to see a game that puts just the right amount of cartoony-ness into the graphics while still keeping them crisp. Another thing is that it doesn't seem to promise much. It's not creating illusions of grandeur whilst in actuality failing to deliver on the promises that the advertising made. Maybe the developer learned from the folly of No Man's Sky. But you see it here, the description is plain: "A game of aerospace industry and interplanetary exploration." That's it. There's no words or dialogue in the videos, no promises made other than basic gameplay mechanics. The developer delivered the game in a way that allows you to discover for yourself. And that's something that very few games enable you to do now days.

In game, there's work to be done, sure. Collecting resources, keeping safe from the windstorms, and building and supplying your base with power. But it doesn't feel like a grind. There's always something new around the corner.

For the $20 I paid for it, this has been great for the first 5 hours and I only expect it to get better.

Great and refreshing game, highly recommend if you enjoy open world games and making your own way.

Update 2019:
I'm about 170 hours in and I still love this game every bit as much as I did when I bought it, if not more. It's evolved so logically and I love how the game itself IS the UI, there is no real UI, just what you can touch, feel, and interact with. The next step for this game would be VR support. If it had proper VR support I would probably go out and buy a headset just to play this in VR.
