I taught my son to play poker a few months back, and he returned the favor by pointing me to the demo version of Balatro. It has quickly become my game of choice. Poker, but with more ridiculous hands, decks, and modifiers. What's that? A straight flush made up of A 3 5 8 of spades and 6 of diamonds, because of the wacky jokers that make it possible to score a 4-card flush, a 4-card straight, and have spaces in straights? Yeah, it's kinda like that. Excellent game, and it's got an extraordinary amount of content.

In more than 20 years of 6dof games, there have been 3 and two-halves good games in the genre -- Descent, Descent II, (part of) Descent 3, (part of) Sublevel Zero, and now Overload. I've spent years playing Descent, both in PvE and PvP modes, and Overload recaptures almost every part of the original with some modern twists. It's not completely going to replace the 1v1 ladder-match experience, but the single player, challenge mode, and anarchy modes are all top notch.

Barely six months into development, and we already have a playable game in the style of the Descent series, with some new features in place and many more to come.

What it's not:

- a pure remake
- a complete game (yet; this is still early access)

What it is:

- FUN!
- a unique flight model (unique to the Descent franchise as a whole)
- a fitting successor to the classics
