TL;DR: Game takes very long to complete, and will take multiple playthroughs to get 100% of the story. Very good narrative game with well-designed language deciphering mechanics, but some slightly clunky controls and dialogue.

I feel very conflicted about this game. On the one hand, the story was so intriguing I burned 17 hours nearly straight on this, and even the slow walking didn't feel that much worse when I knew something exciting would be right around the corner. Certainly huge props to the writing team of this game for some of the best pacing I have ever seen in a game, but this only applies on the first time through.

Now, 17 hours later, I'm finally done with my first playthrough only to be given a cryptic choice, with many questions left unanswered and the game not so subtly hinting that I would have to go through it again, and frankly all I feel now is exhaustion. There are other reviews that go far more into detail about this, but now at the second time around all that pacing works against the game, basically forcing you to go through all the cutscenes and dialogue that was once fresh but now stale.

That being said, this game still gave me a feeling of wonder and discovery that I hadn't really felt from a game since playing Outer Wilds or Chants of Sennaar, The non-linear storytelling was done masterfully and I found myself repeatedly impressed by the game's ability to keep track of everything that had happened, and then have the characters react quite naturally, tying together pieces of information I had learned before with what I just discovered. The only time I noticed this falling apart somewhat was during the sailing sequences where Aliya would frequently repeat the same phrase every time we entered or exited a slow patch.

This also brings me to the control scheme for this game, which I can only describe as...strange. Moving around the world feels intuitive enough, until you enter the many, many points where the game decides you're no longer playing as your character but rather watching a mini-cutscene. It almost feels like you're playing with the game with how often you trade control. The dialogue options when speaking to other characters is similarly limited, with typically up to 3 options being presented, and if there are more you have to cycle through them, 2 at a time. Explicitly telling your character to respond was interesting at first, but quite quickly became tedious, especially if that was your only way to get more context on something that you've just found.

This awkward control extends to the translation part of the game as well, especially if you're playing this game on a controller. The early passages aren't too bad, but later on in the game you encounter more complex phrases that can contain entire sentences, and at this point the drag-and-drop mechanic just feels clunky to navigate words from all the way on the left of your word bank to the very far right of the sentence. Then once you've finished, it's quite easy to misclick and end up back in the word selection again rather than confirming your guesses, though perhaps that last one is more a personal problem.

I really wish they had fleshed out the language system a bit more. While it's already impressive that they created an entire conlang with consistent script, many of the words clearly follow an English interpretation, such as a particular word being used as a verb and a noun for a double meaning, with the script of the game clearly indicating one way when you're really meant to interpret it the other. I would be very curious about how well this game localizes into other languages given this design choice.

Overall, despite thoroughly enjoying the game, I can't quite recommend it due to the sheer amount of time you have to spend doing anything in this game, and ultimately not for much reward unless you're willing to put all that time back into it. If you enjoy a good narrative experience and have some time to burn, or have more self-control than me and can put the game down and play over several sessions then perhaps you should give this a try, but be prepared to at least spend 12 hours.

By far the most fun I've ever had trying to play a 53 hour tutorial.Game is HARD but if you have experience with souls-likes then this should be nothing new. What is interesting is how you'll have to figure out everything you can do all while fighting for your life. IMO the best way to experience this game is by NOT looking up any material for it until you are well and truly stuck with no way forward. Until then, the game practically begs you to try random things and learn how the mechanics work, all while subtly hiding things from you to give you a sense of wonder when you find them. I for one found myself cursing the game devs several times for making me walk all the way around the map only to reveal that a shortcut was just around a hidden corner right where I started.Perhaps my favorite part of this though is that even after you've finished the game and learned all the mechanics, unlike other hidden knowledge games TUNIC is still fun to play NG+. Now that you know how the game works, you get to play the game again feeling like a real gamer using mechanics you weren't supposed to be aware of at that stage of the game.10/10 wish I could forget everything and play this game fresh again.

I thought I'd just have a little bit of fun playing around with a simple shipping route and next thing I know I'm 16 hours in blasting tunnels through mountains to connect a high-speed passenger railway across the country.
