I don't want to sound too harsh, if you enjoy anomaly hunting games, you *might* enjoy this. The premise is not to find differences, but rather indications of a haunting. So you may notice something has changed, but if it's not outright acting like a haunting (moving on its own, floating, possessed, etc.) then it is not something you should mark as dangerous. Don't go into it thinking it's simply a spot the difference type of anomaly hunting game.

There are mainly two issues with this game for me, the first being that the scares are not effective. The things that can happen inside the cabin are not subtle, there's not a lot of "anomaly hunting" in this. When something is wrong, it's very apparent. Which you might think would make it easier, but sometimes there are random events in which you can die and have to start over regardless. The speed and clunkiness of your character makes avoiding harm difficult in a way that does not feel challenging, but more like it was probably a mistake that they left it that way.

The second issue I have with the game, is that it is made up mostly of prefabricated assets. I'm not calling it an asset flip per se, plenty of great games have used premade assets effectively, but seeing and recognizing "Factory Interior", "Log Cabin", and "Apartment Interior" from the Unreal marketplace, implemented mostly unaltered, makes the game feel like a cynical assembly of stuff the developers had lying around rather than a game with any real vision or direction. The minimal amount of content in the game also makes me feel as though it was assembled quickly and without much consideration, in order to take advantage of a trend in games that is currently popular.

Cynicism aside, I didn't refund the game because for the price point, even if you don't end up enjoying the experience, it's not a big loss. I just think, unless you're itching for more of this type of game (but not exactly), then you probably won't get much out of the maybe 30 minutes of game play that this game offers.

I would recommend this if you like short horror experiences, Lovecraft, and can deal with a few caveats.

Pros:
- pretty faithful adaptation of the source material
- it has decent atmosphere
- penguins
- it's concise, doesn't overstay its welcome for the amount of content that's in the game

Cons:
- difficult to tell where you're supposed to be going at any given time, especially in the city of the elder things
- bare-bones menus and UI
- not very scary, the encounters with various creatures are pretty underwhelming. There is also a glitch where a static floating model of the nautilus crab creature stays in the last place where you died. This glitch has appeared every time I've played the game so I don't think it was a fluke
- many small bugs and glitches, though none of them are game-breaking that I encountered
- collision is rough, stairs and slopes are not friendly to the player, you'll often find yourself getting stuck on and jumping up what look like easily-scaleable terrain

Overall not a bad time if you're looking for a short lovecraftian horror experience. There's room for improvement, and hopefully we can see a sequel or more lovecraft-inspired games from this developer with some of these issues fixed and improved upon.

While I appreciate what they were going for, and I really like the concept, it just didn't land for me. I found the handful of puzzles and hidden content to be underwhelming in terms of providing a compelling mystery and the ARG elements are not done all that well.

Additionally, I didn't think most of the effort put into "playing" the game pays off considering almost every scenario ends with a Mandela Catalog-esque jumpscare face and a loud noise. They were too predictable to be effective on top of that.

If you're really desperate for some kind of meta-horror arg type interactive media you might have a good time with this if you keep your expectations relatively low, but otherwise I can't recommend it.

I recommend this game tentatively on the basis that if you want to play a competent souls-like, but don't care *too much* about good bosses or story, you could have a good time with this game.

I think it's gameplay is a solid 8/10 - satisfying combat and a number high-mobility options for navigating levels quickly, interesting enemy design, sometimes interesting boss design. However the bosses do not feel particularly menacing or like an event. /minor spoilers/ The final boss was particularly lackluster and there was virtually no build up to it and no fanfare for defeating it. Environments are visually neat but sometimes blend together in ways that make it easy to get lost. That can make doing side quests quite tedious, even with the optional objective marker the game gives you in the form of a compass item.

Story is meh, alternate history french revolution stuff. Interesting concept but it's delivered with such soulless character-to-character dialogue and cutscenes that I never felt particularly engaged. Things certainly could have been pulled off better. It doesn't help that all of the human character designs are quite boring and they're rendered fairly ugly. Their rough motion-capture animations paired with overly poeticized period dialogue made the whole thing feel rather goofy.

The game does have its jank. I didn't experience many glitches or bugs in my play through and it ran fine, with one or two moments of stuttering throughout the whole thing. However the quest system and progression itself seems kind of precarious. I accidentally sequence broke a few events, but were able to return to them later and they triggered correctly after I fulfilled other prerequisites for the quests. But it sounds like I may have gotten lucky based on some other reviews. And one of the side quests never left my objective marker or location quest indicator, even though I had completed the criteria for it and it was added to my finished quest list in the journal. The game allows you to move freely between areas, however I'd be wary of picking up items when exploring areas you're not sure you're supposed to be in. It's very easy to get over certain obstacles that aren't obviously meant to keep you out of areas you're not meant for yet.

Really didn't care for it. A lot of quality of life features missing that even an actual ps1 game would have had. No mid-level checkpoints, each chapter can only be accessed from the levels menu, no real save system. Unskippable cutscenes make it tedious to get back into a chapter if you died or quit halfway through a level.

The gameplay itself is okay. Nothing special. A lot of backtracking and hopping around fairly small levels to get keys and objects that you could have picked up the first time. For example in the apartment chapter; it's obvious that you'd need to pick up the sledgehammer in the utility room on one end of the map. But the trigger doesn't appear to pick it up until you've gone to the next objective on the complete opposite side of the map. Feels like padding to me. The gunplay is nice, using the gun actually feels very impactful, and the reaction from enemies is visceral in a satisfying way. The knife system is pretty underwhelming though. No stabbing animation, the thing just kind of tweens into position and then the enemy dies. Animation and sound design overall are pretty lacking. It didn't feel as though the sound was spatial at all, as if every sound effect played at the same volume regardless of proximity or direction. I played with headphones as well, it was really immersion breaking to hear a zombie groan repetitively from a random location on the map I was nowhere near.

Overall unless you're solely in it for the over-the-top gore and vulgar humor, I don't really think it's worth your time if you want a good gameplay experience.

As some other reviews have pointed out, this is essentially a slender clone with a somewhat unique framing device to draw you in.

I love games like hypnospace outlaw and simulacra, arg's and creepypasta-esque horror in general, so a game about a found computer with a haunted game on it is very attractive to me.

However the haunted operating system concept factors into it very little, and basically the game consists of the following and can be completed in about 10 minutes (spoilers, if you can call it that):

find Game.exe in files, it's corrupt
look at command list, open prompt use 'fix Game.exe'
open Game.exe
find 10 candles and avoid monster

That's it, that's the whole game and while there are a few narrative clues to be found in some of the documents, it's just not that fleshed out or interesting of a story aside from the game itself being very shallow. No Players Online is very similar in concept but executes it better and for free.

If you could get it for free it's worth the 15 minutes or so, but I don't think it's worth money, and on that grounds I can't recommend it. But I'd love to see a more fleshed out version of this concept.
