It didn't take much time playing to see that this game has excellent gameplay as a framework for designing more levels, and that the levels that come pre-made are excellently designed. I wouldn't normally review a game this early, but I can already tell the quality, plus it's on sale right now.

- There are powerups that change the gameplay.
- There are hidden collectibles and reason to replay levels for all enemies, all collectibles, and speedrun time.
- You can trigger level events from switches.
- Level sharing is well thought out, improving upon Super Mario Maker.
- You can cooperatively build.
- You can grab "shells" from any direction and not have to hold the "hold" button to carry them. (In other words, the controls are better than the Super Mario Bros. series.)

I got this on a $0.99 sale and that's a darn good deal.

Edit: I previously said that this didn't have other dungeons to do if you got stuck before finishing the main story, but I just didn't realize where they were.

I'd recommend Serpentcoil Island over this for newcomers to the series, since that one is easier to start, has more quality of life features, and has more side dungeons to try if you get stuck. However, this is a great game to play after Serpentcoil Island, because it ramps up the difficulty very early on and has items and gameplay elements that Serpentcoil doesn't have, in particular the day/night cycle (which totally changes the gameplay).

Anyway, this game is brutal. It's not quite like a typical roguelike where you try to work with what you get and start from scratch every time. Instead, you can (with the right items) safely escape with your inventory and store up resources and better equipment, along with knowledge of which enemies and traps to expect and when, so that you can go in prepared for all of the possible things that can and will go wrong.

There are enemies that, if I was designing a game, I would not even consider to put in. Enemies that downgrade your equipment, your stats, your level(!!), prevent you from unequipping your equipment, etc.. There are invisible traps that may downgrade your equipment or hit you with temporary or near-permanent debuffs. But, knowing that these things exist, you can bring protection and learn to expect them.

Shiren the Wanderer is a series about learning the hazards and preparing yourself to deal with them. It's like being an experienced adventurer and packing your bag with the appropriate ointments and tools for the area. It is not simply throwing yourself into the unknown and hoping for lucky drops (although there is still some of that).

Once again, if you haven't played the series, I highly suggest Serpentcoil Island as a starting point and then consider this one as the next step up if you enjoyed that. I know the price of entry is steeper that way, but I think the average person would have a rough time getting into the series with this one as a starting point.

It's very much like Centrist, but with some improvements. If you didn't play that, you can skip it and go right to this one, imo. If you did play that, this feels like it should've just been an update, but I can understand why it wasn't. It's different enough that it would invalidate previous high scores and achievements if it was a patch to Centrist.

Anyway, this is a surprisingly good Tetris-like game that makes you think differently than what you're used to from standard Tetris because of how you need to complete squares around the center.

It's nice that there are multiple modes, and unlockable tilesets and difficulties to shoot for.

It still looks rough around the edges visually, and feels like it could use some quality of life touchups to the gameplay (though it's hard to put my finger on what exactly; maybe more delay / audio & visual indication / forgiveness when you're about to incur a loss). But it's priced pretty low, so I can't complain.

There really are hours of fun to be had here if you're into this kind of game and chasing the unlockables and high scores.

Update: The more I play, the better it gets. This is a super solid game with a lot of content!

I accepted a free copy of this since I used to play Cribbage with my dad and grandpa when I was a kid.

I was expecting a lazy Balatro copy, but though it may be a copy of the idea, it's not a lazy one, and it's super addicting and fun. The graphics don't especially stand out, but the UI is perfectly functional (albeit generic) and the gameplay is excellent.

There's a poop-ton of content as well in the way of different deck variations and difficulties, as well as unlockable perks and items and decks for clearing those decks on different difficulties (or for other achievements). Rather than considering the cost of the game, I'd be more concerned about the time cost of getting addicted to this game.

I have not actually played Balatro yet myself to give a comparison on that front.

Also, I feel like I'd have to be a mathematician and really master the game before I'm able to rate how well the items and perks are balanced, so unfortunately I'm not going to try to speak on that aspect of it.

Quite satisfying! It's not simply arranging tiles where they fit; it's arranging them where they fit and score the most points. Every few level there are more gameplay gimmicks added, for example building around trees, covering geysers to open other geysers, using paths to keep your building colors contiguous for bonus points at the end, etc.

The leaderboards, level creator, and challenges are icing on the cake.

At first I thought "only 4 worlds? This'll be a short one." But it's not. If you spend as much time thinking as I do, this game will take you a good... I dunno... 10+ hours to finish.

Oh yes, this is a cool new take. I'm going to want this one.

Criticisms from the demo:
- Soft drop is slow, imo.
- I'd have to think about anything additional, but Tetrachroma super nailed Tetris controls, so I'd give that a try to get an idea for ideal control options / handling / audio/visual gameplay guidance, etc.

It's pretty much just as fun as Beat Saber. This feels more like dancing and Beat Saber feels more like drumming, usually.

Very good. Very smooth. Very options. Like it.

**Update:**
*Extremely* good game.
This is a top-tier Tetris-like game with lots of modes, customization settings, unlockables, the best Tetris programming one could hope for, excellent audio and visual cues for every gameplay element.

You know how in good game design, you give the player a bit more forgiveness than they might expect because it's more satisfying that way? For example, in other games, making hurtboxes smaller or letting the player make a jump when they're only a few pixels off. This game applies that to Tetris by giving you ample repositioning time with soft dropped pieces, and making the Game Over threshhold at the top of the screen last longer than expected by allowing you to squeeze in more pieces than you'd be able to in a typical Tetris game, even if it might be only a visual difference (I'm honestly not sure). There are even limited Undo's for those times when you do a simple screw-up.

I don't think I've ever said this about a game, but Tetrachroma feels like it is *underpriced* at $5. This easily feels more like a game that could be $15 or $20 (and which I'd be happy paying $10 for).
