The Dark Souls of racing games. It will beat you into submission, but once you get the hang on just how to get around the corners without killing yourself and your co-driver, it offers one of the most rewarding and satisfying driving experiences I've encountered in gaming.

After five and a half hours I finished my first match against AI. Despite what the reviews have said, I had an absolute blast playing as the US.

Conflict quickly brewed on my continent which escalated into war. The powers across the pond attempted to assist their allies, but thanks to my early implementation of towns along islands between us, I was able to keep them largely at bay with ranged units. As my army grew and marched to fight wars on the Southern and Western front, I rocketed through the ages and soon found myself developing my first nuclear weapon with full intention of utilizing it against the last French city to the South.

Unfortunately, my troops to the West proved prevalent against their adversaries. As the Western front grew quiet and the first civilization was knocked out of the game, I was awarded with a victory screen. "You have won the Modern Era" it says. But I hadn't won in my mind, I'd only won that front. I still had France and a whole continent to liberate! They had oil! That could have kept my war effort going for another 30 turns!

But unlike previous iterations of Civilization, there was no 'Keep Playing' button. Only 'Continue'. I hadn't developed satellites, finished my atomic bomb, or even liberated my entire continent. I was ripped from the game with a victory animation I felt I hadn't deserved. The save was gone, and unable to be reloaded. The French had escaped yet again. An unacceptable turn of events.

I do wish there was a 'Mixed' option, as I DID have fun, but it felt as though those hours were wasted as the snowball I had accrued for myself was ripped away without warning. Not sure when I'll play another round.

Melancholy Angel made me vulgar. Would race again.
