Breakpoint in 2025 is a strange mix of Type 2 fun and questioning reality.

TLDR: Gearscore is still trash, play Operation Motherland on Immersive Mode. It's what the game was meant to be from day 1 and it is well worth the money if you find it on sale. Pick and choose your way through the Episode 2 and 3 missions for fun. Don't worry about "missing out" on story, it doesn't make any sense no matter what you do.

-------------

It's hard to talk about Breakpoint without beating another horse to death, but I think it deserves a narrower look from a standpoint of what it delivers today.

Breakpoint has the bones of a game that should have dominated the milsim-arcade niche for years.

What I mean is that there is a VERY good framework of core gameplay functionality here. The gunplay is solid. The sniping (a disappointment in Wildlands) is now fairly satisfying due to far better draw distances and spawn handling/culling.
The moment to moment action when you end up in a firefight is very satisfying and on Immersive mode, downright thrilling at times.

The story is wildly confusing and painful to interact with thanks to the pinterest board from hell they decided to shove into the UI.

The upgrade path feels arbitrary and lackluster unless you play the "l33t g34rsc0re m0d3".
The skill system fell into the same trap many other games did, where it is gatekeeping core functionality instead of offering specialization and development of playstyle.

The gear nerd/fashion souls aspect is somewhat hampered by the painfully awkward leavings of the monetization plans and gearing gates that used to be strapped around the whole thing.

The modding scene has taken this game to an even higher peak of raw tacti-cool fun, and I strongly recommend you try it out (go look up "DEEF" on youtube for some excellent content and a solid step by step to modding the game).

All in all, I hate that I love the gameplay so much, because this should have been so much more that it ever was.
