Medical science has a long history of testing on animals along with the cosmetic and food industries as research methods have moved on, there are now many arguments supporting the abolition of testing on live subjects. Activists argue there are other methods available to science and industry that will provide results of equal value. During the course of this essay I seek to illustrate both the pros and cons of animal vs non animal methods of testing.
One argument that supports the use of animal testing is its proven contribution to certain lifesaving cures and treatments. The California Biomedical Research Association states that “every medical breakthrough in the last 100 years has resulted directly from research using animals”. Whilst this may indeed be the case new methods now make this obsolete, as a progressive society we need to continue to explore alternative ways of testing.
