I REALLY hope the developers read my review. I love the souls genre and the aesthetic of abstract/atmospheric horror games. I also really respect the time and effort that it takes to create a video game.

On to the review: I sadly think this game is very bad. Normally if an indie game is unpolished or lacking in certain features, I would give some credit, but this game is just bad. From simple issues that annoy the crap out of you to design choices that are SERIOUSLY questionable, this game just falls completely flat. Even at 25$, it feels overpriced. An analogy I would use is Dark Souls is a ferrari and this game is a beat up 2005 Toyota Camry. The beat up 2005 Camry will get the job done if you need it, but why the hell would I pay 50% the price of a ferrari for it? To anyone wanting to buy this to save money, just spend the extra on an actually good game.

Controls: The controls are horrific. I think I remember the starting scene saying that it was optimized for mouse and keyboard maybe? I certainly hope so because the experience on a controller is terrible. The default button to interact is right trigger? Or you select items in menus with B, instead of A? I accidentally fast traveled immediately because I pressed B to get out of the menu, but it turns out that B selects things. It should be EXTREMELY easy to make controller mappings user-friendly. It feels like the developers have never played a video game before and just bound actions to random buttons.

Gameplay/Combat: One review I read said that the game utilizes a combo system, and the combat feels clunky if you dont use it. I would argue the combat feels clunky regardless. Your character moves extremely fast regardless of what you want to do, but the enemies typically move slow (similarly to DS1 or DS2 enemies). This creates a terrible experience while fighting. Your character also swings super slowly despite moving very fast? It feels like bloodborne movement with DS1 greatsword swinging. Also the movement feels...off. Its hard to describe, but its similar to mortal shell movement. The rate at which you move and the animations of your character are clearly not in sync. It creates a very bizarre and unpolished feeling.

Visuals: The design of the visuals are appealing. I like the environment that they are going for. This is the main reason that I even bought the game. The graphics arent amazing, but I am okay with this due to the small design team. My main reason that I cant even give the visuals a complete pass is because the animations are particle effects are TERRIBLE. Weirdly enough, many of these effects would actually be better if they were just removed from the game. For example, when you stab a giant enemy in the back, rays of bright white light erupt from their back, covering your ENTIRE screen. How does this even make sense? Just remove that all together, its terrible.

Level design: The level design feels terrible. Half of the areas are just bridges and pathways with single enemies. It doesnt feel very interactive or real. It almost feel like this floating arrangement of pieces that you traverse alone with the occasional enemy. In some cases, it feels appropriate due to the abstract nature of the game, but in most areas, it just feels like poor level design.

Conclusion: The main things I look for in good indie games is gameplay. Gameplay is King. If a game looks mediocre, but the movement and combat is a crisp and refreshing expansion to the Souls genre, I would still LOVE the game. Sadly this game just falls flat in general.
