I picked up this little jewel during the Summer Sale and I'd recommend it a thousand times if I could. I'll try and keep the review short and sweet and hopefully spoiler-free, though some gameplay mechanics may be explained.

You begin your journey in the city of Cloudbank as the mute songstress, Red, wielding nothing but a talking sword which happens to be called the Transistor. Immediately, your companion tells you to move and you're soon running around the mysterious and towering city looking for answers to the events that have transpired, reading Function files and OVC terminals to find out what is causing the disappearance of the city and the people who had the most influence making the city into what it is.

The overall design for this game is absolutely beautiful. The blend of art deco and cyberpunk makes the game vastly unique with beautiful artwork appearing during cutscenes and optional areas. There aren't many characters in the game but the interplay between Red and her talking companion makes it hard not to care about their situation and the surrounding events. Sound design also plays a huge part in becoming immersed in the game as it is very influential and relevant to the story and really reminds the player of Red's past life as a musician. Often times, I will let Red hum to the background music for minutes without realizing how long I've been doing it. Yeah, it's that good.

As in traditional RPG fashion, the game involves a leveling system which unlock slots for upgrades to your basic arsenal of Functions. It also utilizes the ability to combine these Functions to upgrade your moves or give different effects depending on the slot they're in; giving the player quite a bit of options regarding how you choose to fight. Mechanics for the gameplay seem to try to expand on the typical RPG style and use a cross between real time and activating Turn() to strategically plan your next couple of moves without fear of retailiation from enemies. I personally enjoyed figuring out countless combinations to alter my playstyle, though some players may find the combat repetititve considering you will most likely use the most powerful combinations you can make and continue to use the same tactic to deal with every foe from about mid to end game. Fortunately, Limiters can keep the game from becoming too monotonous, allowing you to ramp up the difficulty at your own leisure and the Recursion playthrough will bring you back for more if you'd like 100% completion.

In summary, the game can be completed in about 5-10 hours depending on your speed and while not very lengthy, you can go for a second playthrough if you want more. The combat is intelligent, though some players will be turned off by its repetition and may find certain combinations of Functions too powerful or easy and can burn through the game using only 2-3 moves. The interaction between Red and her Transistor makes for a compelling story hopefully enticing the player to find out the truth behind Cloudbank and the Process and where it leads our protagonists. The artwork and design of the game is astoundingly vivid and the soundtrack fits perfectly with the atmosphere of the game and I can't possibly stress enough how beautiful it all feels. I also highly recommend buying the soundtrack. Do yourself a favor and get the bundle.

Overall rating: 9.5/10
