The game does what it says it does well and I hardly have any meaningful criticisms of it. I found a lot of personal enjoyment in how little it says, rather letting the player explore and figure things out on their own. I was delighted to stumble upon certain interactions between the player's abilities and find unique ways to solve platforming sections. I genuinely had fun with the game, which is something I've not felt about a game in a long while. I feel that a lot of care and passion went in to this game and I'd like to say "Thank you" to the dev(s).

Note: I've only sunk about an hour in to this new Steam version of it, but that's not representing the hours I sunk in to the old Discord version of the game. There also was no changelog that I could find so I could be mistaken in some regards.

(Original Review)

I'm honestly at a loss for words with how disappointed I am with the Steam launch. I got this game back when it came out on Discord and thought that it was a novel idea in need of work. It has been just about a year since then and the game has failed in nearly every expectation. Many features were tweaked or removed (including in-game voice chat) and other promised features feel shallow or half-baked even after a year of dev time. They're releasing the game again with no mention of the extremely poor Discord reception and also right before the Holidays again- meaning if anything goes south then they'll be away for vacation. I'm too tired and angry to go in to precise detail of everything wrong, but I'll just leave it at: I feel like I've been scammed

------------

(Updated Review)

Gonna expand this because people were (rightfully) saying it offered little insight. The original Discord version of this game wasn't perfect, but only needed some fine-tuning and content. We never got either of those and ended up waiting a year with total radio silence from the devs while their Discord mods would issue perm-bans on a whim. We waited all this time for the promised new content and progression system and get what feels like a hollow shell of the original game.

Mechanics:

Survivor:
The game is a Five-Versus-One asymmetric horror game where you play as a bunch of highschoolers trying to escape. Most people will immediately compare it to Dead by Daylight since you have a group of people trying to not get killed by one other player. However, I would liken it more to Left 4 Dead's versus mode seeing as it has a linear objective that gets you to an escape zone and player death is not permanent. Survivors also are not only equipped to run away- they can easily fight back. Survivors are split into four different classes and they can be reselected upon death. The classes are pretty simple: you have an assault class to fight the killer; a medic to heal the team; a scout to find traps and the killer; and a technician that can place turrets and board doors. Since there are four classes and five survivors you will end up stacking two survivors on one class. Survivors can also create gear using scrap that they can scavenge around the map. Dead survivors can be rescued from various closets around the map.

Progression:
In the Discord version scrap could be used to upgrade your class as well as make items, but this seems to have been scrapped removed with the introduction of the "progression system". The system looks like a Bloodweb from Dead by Daylight and contains different nodes where you use currency you obtain through gameplay. One currency (coins) is obtained based off of an assessment of your performance in a round in regards to combat, objective, escape, and rescues. The other currency (cards) is based off of the amount of survivors that actually survived the round and escaped. Cards are used to obtain cosmetics while coins are used to progress in the tree. The "skilltree" has a bunch of nodes which contain "spells" which are one-time buffs you can use in a round. You can equip up to two spells and they are consumed on round end or use. You can buy more stock of a spell in the tree for a cheaper price than the initial investment in to the spell. This progression system and spells are seemingly only for survivors currently.

Fiends:
Then there's the other side of the coin: the Fiend (as they call the killers). There are four fiends in the game: Slasher, Strangler, Giant, and Spider. All of them but Spider were in the original Discord release of the game. The fiend's goal is to kill all survivors before they can complete the map objective and escape. They can do this by: placing traps in a sort of pre-plan mode (kind of like before you spawn as an infected in L4D versus); waiting in ambush at one of the designated insta-kill spots that are plentiful around the map; or just running at survivors and attacking them head-on. Each fiend has unique abilities and play-styles lending them more prone to certain approaches. If a fiend were to die in combat then they suffer a short cooldown and must respawn as a different fiend. Maps seen to have also been reworked to include tiny little spider mobs that attack survivors for the killer.

My Review:

I admittedly have not tried playing as a fiend in the Steam release as I could hardly force myself to play as much as I did as a survivor. Gameflow typically boils down to survivors running through a map as fast as they can while the killer spams the insta-kill zones since they easily tripled the amount of them. Much like the Discord release- if a fiend shows hide or hair, then survivors quickly descend upon them and attempt to kill them in record time. The fiend is deceptively weak to being simply jumped on and beaten to death. This is especially true if survivors stock up on scrap and then make really useful gear all at once. However, without voicechat it's a fair bit more difficult for survivors to coordinate as well as they did in the Discord version making it less likely that a fiend will be repeatedly obliterated by a well-coordinated squad. Fiends now also have the option of nearly never having to take on a full group of survivors with the introduction of dozens upon dozens new insta-kill spots. The things seriously litter every room and every turn. Ambush spots used to be tastefully spread at certain key chokepoints, however they now occupy every five meters. The new fiend really gets an edge with this too since their ambush spots have no discernible telegraph. While Slasher uses skylights, Strangler uses vents, and Giant uses (admittedly not always obvious) walls- Spider can use nearly any patch of floor that has enough space for it making it extremely frustrating to move forward. Normally this is countered by scouts, but should you lose your scout or have one that isn't cooperating very well... then you're going to have to suffer the world's worst game of minesweeper. The progression system is not at all what I thought it would be and feels really shallow and boring. It looks like they cut out some things such as upgrading your class and instead expect you to stock up on spells in the progression tree, but it just feels like an annoying feature to micromanage with no actual sense of "progression". Not even to mention how some of the spells look super infuriating to deal with for fiends (instant self-revive? melee attacks ignite?). Cosmetics aren't all too exciting either with most lying in the realm of just being a recolour. Oh, and those skins exclusive to us who bought the game on Discord? Either don't exist or are a really shoddy Discord logo + Recolour of the survivors that we still have to grind to purchase. We don't just Get them.

All in all, I feel like the devs fled after a rather poor reception of the Discord release and are now back after things have died down to milk unsuspecting steam users of their money. The main man behind this released some sob story on imgur to promote the game because he doesn't want to just buy ad-space and throws the word "I" around a lot rather than crediting the team behind the game. Also makes a bunch of pretty pretentious claims like how he never partnered with a publisher (Uh... hello? Discord?) and overall sounds like a total dunce. I'm not the best at giving reviews and didn't expect people to really respond to this- so I'm sorry if this is really shoddy. I'm just really passionate about people exploiting games for a quick buck without delivering the quality product they promised.
