Don’t buy this remaster in its current state, you can get the original games on sale for 90p a pop, and you can use the files in those to play functional, cared for remasters the fans have created.

If you already own the remaster -
on Steam, you can download Patch 4 either via the client console or via DepotDownloader.
on GOG, there’s a version selector where you can choose to play a specific patch.
I’d recommend the following mods found on Nexus Mods:
‘OG Mode 30 FPS Limit Unlock’ by MuruModder
The TR1 & 2 Higher Quality SFX replacement, and TR3 Higher Volume SFW mods by Swiftie24
‘Remastered TR1 FMV’ by SteveOfWarr

You can still buy the original releases on Steam and GOG.
For Tomb Raider 1, you can either
use Carlmundo’s Automated Fix found on the Steam Community Page.
play in DOSBox as is. There used to be guides to restore some PS1 features, but they’re unavailable.

For Tomb Raider 2, I’ve had limited results getting it to run out of the box without the resolution switching between 480p and 1080p playing FMVs.
use Carlmundo’s Automated Fix found on the Steam Community Page.

Tomb Raider 3 should run out of the box provided the game’s resolution isn’t above 1080p. I’m not aware of any method to play the game’s expansion using Steam/GOG.

You can use the files from the above versions of the games in TRX on Github. It runs on Linux natively! If using KDE with multiple screens, you’ll need to force the program to use the desired screen in the ‘Configure Special Application Settings’ menu.

Following the release of the Star Wars Battlefront remasters, published by Aspyr Media, a friend came to me puzzled on it’s poor quality compared to the Tomb Raider remasters. We’ve recently found it’s because the remasters were mainly developed by Saber Interactive and that they hired skilled members of the community who had a deep understanding of the games’ codebase including, but not limited to, XProger of the OpenLara project and developers of the TR Main projects.

Based on posts on social media, the developers of these remasters worked under incredibly poor conditions put on them by Aspyr, Crystal Dynamics, and Embracer Group. The team effectively had to push out 6 remasters in 2 years, and ideas such as the “amulet upgrade system” were argued about and shot down. The team at Saber understandably doesn’t want to work with Aspyr again.

It would appear as though Crystal Dynamics hasn’t taken notes from the crunch on developers at Core Design, which lead to the rough release of Angel of Darkness.

Saber’s contract with Aspyr, Crystal, and Embracer had expired after Patch 2 of the 4-6 remasters. 1-3’s Patch 5 was outsourced to a company called Magic Media, a Web3 mobile developer, who were responsible for developing the challenge mode and the new outfits. While Aspyr have put out a statement expressing ‘no AI generated assets were used in the update’. As a digital artist, I think this is an attempt at gaslighting the audience.

All you have to do is look at the advertisements to see that there was no soul put into the artwork, it’s the same soullessness ‘generative AI’ tends to have. The new outfits are non-sensical and have little to do with Lara herself. The ‘atlantean bio-armour’ looks like it belongs more so in Tomb Raider Anniversary than it does the original games, which suggests to me direct involvement from Crystal during development.

On the Tomb Raider forums and subreddit, you’ll find consolidated lists of bugs including, but not limited to, texture glitches, animations failing to play, traps failing to function, save deletion, etc. Arguably, these games are more broken than they were on release 30 years ago. I can only assume this is the case because the devs at Magic Media didn’t understand the games’ codebase well enough to make anything of substance so they instead opted to vibe code with AI instead. The results are unsurprisingly poor.

Developers at Magic Media are posting on Linkedin inferring that the game has just released without disclosing they had only developed Patch 5, and Aspyr and Crystal Dynamics continue to promote the game in it’s current state and have refused to revert the patch a week in. I doubt the problems consolidated on the forums are going to be resolved, as Aspyr are tasking fans to provide bug reports on their website.

I won’t sugarcoat it, this is vandalism. The developers and publishers involved with this patch have vandalised the work of the original devs at Core and the work of the devs at Saber, that they had to do under such appalling conditions. They’ve spat in the face of those who’ve supported the franchise financially, in it’s development, and in the community.

This update showcases how little care Crystal has for the games created at Core 30 years ago, and has spurred further the idea that they harbor contempt for the series. A sentiment that originated from around the time Core’s ‘Anniversary Edition’ Trailer was leaked, as well as that game’s cancellation. It’s been a sentiment that has festered over time and has been fueled by actions such as the Evercade releases of the Classic Games, which replaced the original lore of those games with lore from Crystal’s unified timeline.

Tomb Raider (1996) is one of my favourite games of all time, I find the gameplay to be simple, yet unique and effective. While not everyone’s cup of tea, I find the tank controls intuitive. The environmental puzzles are engaging and I really enjoy utilising the moveset to optimise how I move around the environments. It’s a game that I recommend to anyone I get the chance to, it’s an important part of the industry’s history.

So to see it and this trilogy vandalised the way it has been, with little to no acknowledgement from the teams that did so, is incredibly disappointing to watch. The best thing to do was to have not released this patch at all, the second best thing would be to revert it as soon as possible, though it seems unlikely right now.

If you find an inaccuracy in this review, or think I should add something I’ve missed, please don’t hesitate to comment.

♥♥♥♥ you Aspyr, and ♥♥♥♥ you Crystal Dynamics. <3

--Original Review--
As much as it pains me recommend against these games, the latest update that introduced Challenge Mode not only introduced terrible new outfits, but new bugs. One of which completely wiped my save data, which included a 100% completed TR1 save, on closing the game.

I don't know what the circumstances were for Crystal and Aspyr to outsource the update to a mobile blockchain team, and also I can't believe someone signed off on them. I'm majorly disappointed, I would recommend buying the original versions of the games instead, there's a lot of cool fan projects in addition, too.

"The Pope can't hell dive, none of us hell dive."

While the decision to make mandatory linking to PSN has been reverted by Sony, this game is still unavailable on the storefronts of the 177 Countries that were taken down. I will not be changing this review or re-installing the game until this is reverted, anything less is PR for Twitter.

There are a ton of other reviews and resources on this topic that discuss it in more depth and detail than me (so I recommend seeking them out), but the addition of EAC will ultimately damage the game and it's community, removing a ton of accessibility mods that people need to play the game in particular, as well as bits of optimisation that the game desparately needs. It's a laggy, slow mess as it is in it's current state.

In which case, I'd recommend looking for alternatives, which I will be doing.
