With the latest update I can finally say they are not just building new systems but something that interacts with existing ones making it feel like something that might actually make a good game in the future and not just a collection of game jam ideas.

It's an incredible remix of the base game's mechanics that realistically no one had the time to fully explore during the campaign, repackaged into a roguelite. In short, it's Deathloop except it doesn't fcking suck.

A couple major parts that no one enjoys about roguelikes are still there which seems to be what the majority of the critique is about. The story isn't great. Starting out sucks. You're weak and running against timer that just outpaces you. That phase can and will take multiple hours to get through. But you are gaining permanent progress every single time and will eventually get through it which is when the game starts to really shine. The timer, while still a factor, stops being an issue. You'll stop thinking about the game as a roguelike and more like playing through a campaign with multiple characters, all with their distinct playstyles. And the moonbase, though essentially the same map, keeps revealing it's hand all the way through.

Each playsession is short (though increasingly lengthy as the game goes on), which enabled Arkane to flesh out existing mechanics to be more interesting. Combat has lasting effects. Environments are more punishing to explore and there are roadblocks you have to find a way around. They also weren't afraid to block progress for certain builds because they knew you are going to play with different ones. Failure is part of the gameplay loop and Prey is much better off for it.

If you think the main game was underappreciated then this is underappreciated's unpopular little brother.

Simply put, Hades but bigger and better.

I would play 1 first, though. That way you get to play 2 gotys back to back. But also because my one gripe with the sequel is that it does deviate from "rules-as-written" philosophy whenever the devs felt like it would result in too powerful a combo. Which is just silly because it's not like there isn't a myriad of absolutely 'broken' combos in the game - there is - but that they were apparently the 'correct' ones.

That being said it's by and large a better designed game with a ton of new stuff, enjoyable characters, ton of playstyles, tight controls and banger of a soundtrack to boot.

I dunno. It's three-part dlc and plot-wise the first one was a "I'm 12 and this is deep" -tier ♥♥♥♥
on the other hand who knew you can overuse lasers so much and yet somehow still find new ways to do it

see if i can be arsed to finish the other parts at some point
