Huge sandbox with tons of things to do.

The problem is, all those things are the same. Add to that incredible jank and you have a game that's not really worth dredging up from the olden times. The newer games of this same franchise at least execute its idea better.

A metroidvania which tries something actually new, with the completely unique traversal mechanic of the bike. Gets unreasonably gory at times so take note of that, but it is in the service of the overall bleak and brutal vibe. But game good, go play.

It's Pretty Good. It's very pretty, the atmosphere is heavy and unique, the characters have depth, and the gameplay is fun... but you better learn to love the parry button because hoboy this is a "press parry on cue" kind of metrsoulsivania, not a "zoop, dodge and roll" kind of metrsoulsivania.

It's just not good. It feels like an early access game that got tied together into a "finished" product that's yet unbalanced in what got developed.

Singleplayer campaign veteran difficulty review only. The graphics are all right, the story's fun enough, and the presentation is generally decent. And that's about where the superlatives end.

The AI is truly braindead. Not only does it glitch out sometimes, its gameplan is generally to just suicide its forces in an endless wave from its entry point to your HQ. You'd think that might be a problem for it since those forces cost resources, but naw, it just gets wave-after-wave for free. It leads to ridiculous situations like where you're supposedly a big warband going after a small entrenched group of elite warriors... except whoops in the actual mission the gameplay means you end up effectively controlling a small elite group that you have to carefully husband (your resources for building/rebuilding the army being in short supply), while the opponent keeps trying to drown you in an endless horde of disposable meat.

The balance is wack. Missions can switch between easy and a slog with no clear pattern.

The UI is bad. It ignores genre conventions like manipulating the selection group by shift/ctrl/double clicking on the portraits, so if you're a genre veteran and want to split your army to give them different move orders, that will involve fighting the UI to do so. And speaking of moving, there's sometimes no clear reason why units do certain moves as a result of their orders so that's always cool.

The "rewards" for playing the game like account levels and borders and such are a waste of time that take you out of the campaign and remind you they'd reeeeeeeeally like it if you moved on to the multiplayer instead.

And then there's other annoyances like for example the fact that you can't destroy your own buildings (it would be very useful in some circumstances to say transition one resource generator into another, at a big price - the only way to do it is to let the AI near it and hope it doesn't bug out), and that while you can skip cutscenes (more or less, it takes a weirdly long time to do), once a mission starts you'll probably get followup dialogue and stuff and that will effectively be a cutscene since the game loves taking away control from the player in those times, except those you can't skip. The game commits a capital sin here in that it takes away the control to throw Plot at the player, but it doesn't pause the action. You can potentially lose an entire army because surprise surprise there's another main objective for you to go for and you need to be slowly told all about it while your army (which could otherwise be perfectly fine if only you could press shift+R for Retreat, but oh no it's plot time, can't be distracted by giving orders now) gets slaughtered.

It's not a terrible game and some fun can be had with it but, all in all, it gets a hearty "not recommended" from me.

Giving it a thumbs up, but do note: it's a "it's a bit complicated++" rather than a straight-up endorsement.

The short of it is, Evan's Remains is a truly excellent example of what a tiny studio run-of-the-mill indie game should be in an ideal world. In that world we have a studio whose capacity for handling the workload isn't very big, but instead of that leading to the project getting away from it with all the things they'd like to do until it either ends falling apart, turns crap or just gets stuck in the early access hell, they scale it back and polish it according to their strengths. And so it's a small game from a small studio, but one that's lovingly crafted. The art is pretty, the story is interesting (even its plot holes) without dwelling on needless detail, and the gameplay is serviceable - it's a "puzzle platformer" but the puzzles aren't really the point so they're kept rather easy. The result has its limitations, but it's overall a worthwhile experience that doesn't overstay its welcome. I don't know how big the studio who made it is in actual reality, but this picture of what that perfect world tiny indie studio would do should give you the idea of what to expect of this game.

For the long of it just play the game and see. It's basically a movie length affair.

Another candidate for being an example of "Steam needs an 'eh' button for reviews". The good: the story flows nicely and the story/gameplay integration elements are neat. The simulation aspects of the terraforming are pretty cool. The terraforming itself is also cool, though kinda unrealistic with the scales involved (importing enough nitrogen to build an atmosphere of an entire planet with some piddly rockets within a few years? Yeah I don't know about that one).

The bad: it might be my playstyle but the pace of the game is SLOW. Absurdly so. A lot of time the game is just looking at the planet (or your whole logistic network - depending on how you play you might end up in a logistical nightmare, but honestly that's okay since it actually makes for a bit of a challenge), waiting for the things you put in motion to finally happen. It spreads out the good bits suuuper thin. Also there's combat which is simplistic to the point of being a complete afterthought, but w/e, it's not what the game is about. Some UI choices are questionable, too, but the obvious solutions would increase clutter so I can understand things being the way they are.

Would I recommend the game? I don't know. It's more of an extended session where you vibe with the fantasy it presents for an extended period of time rather than "play" as such. But it's nice at being that. I'll give it a "recommend" but it's purely because the option I actually want isn't available.
