Rivals or Aether, or RoA, is an indie platform fighter, meaning it has the samwe basic mechanics as Super Smash Bros. It takes mechanics from melee and more recent smash games, along with making up a lot of its own and put it together under the guise of a pixel retro art style.

The game is specifically designed for competitive play and in my opinion that it the way it is most enjoyable. Having friends to play with, especially local ones is where the game shines. It has a small single player story mode and the new abyss mode which are fun by themselves and definitely add more depth and value to the $15 game, but in the end are just distractions from the main event.

Mechanics
If you're not familiar with competitive smash the next few things I'll be saying probably make no sense but what can you do. RoA takes the combo and movement heavy style of melee with features such as
-dash dancing
-wave dashing
-strong edgeguard focus
-lots of hitstun
however it also adds the good 'comfort' features of the newer games like
-buffering
-not freefalling out of an airdodge
-more forgiving/intuitive controls.
and it gets rid of shields (making offensive play more rewarding) and the ledge, so no edgehogs or planking.
Believe me when I say it all comes together and isn't just a huge mess of different games. it works and makes for some hugely satisfying combos and edgeguards, without it ever feeling to unfair or unbeatable.

Characters
You'll notice that at the moment RoA only has 8 playable characters which seems like a very small number, and in terms of modern fighters it definitely is! however this isn't as big of a drawback as you may imagine. if you compare it to smash 4 with over 50 characters, every RoA character feels completely unique and I play and enjoy all of them. they all have unique tech and mechanics for them which you would need to learn in order to master the character. Also the small number of characters means balance is a lot easier to the devs, and every character is kept viable and strong enough to compete.

One important thing to note is that I highly reccomend you make sure you have some kind of game pad or controller before you buy this game. While keyboard controls exist it really doesn't allow the freedom and enjoyment for me and almost all other players. You can use a gamecube controller if you have a usb adaptor.

Overall I highly reccomend this game if you have a friend or two to play with and you want ti get into the competitive scene. as a standalone single player game I can't see you getting a huge amount of value, unless you have good internet to play with people either through steam or through its matchmaking system.

This is like minecrafts younger, dimension lacking brother, but he's a really cool brother. Minecraft is your friend who lives on your street, you play with him because he's there and you don't really like him that much. Then you notice his brother. at a first glance he seems inferior on every level, then minecraft goes to the toilet and you say hi to Terraria. you then realise that Terraria was the far superior sibling all along and you wish that you could hang out with him instead of minecraft.
Well luckily for you this is steam and not the street from your childhood, so ditch minecraft and go play terraria, it's really fun.
