I don't think I've ever hosted in this game, but aren't you describing is a very reasonable way of surviving againt an unexpedted enemy?
I invade from time to time too and I wouldn't expect the hosts to come at me naked and just take the L2 in the face.
If you want to duel, go duel, there's a place for that.
