Lots of fun. Still a bustling game, never too late to get into it!

This game is a lot of fun. Most of its appeal comes from how addictive it is to play over and over again to try to get a little farther than before. I don't have a VR setup, but if I did, I would imagine it would be a blast to play there. I'm not the type of person to play these sorts of games for hours on end, but I can certainly recognize that this game is one of the best in its genre. If you think it looks fun, I'd say pick it up!

If you enjoy Sonic the Hedgehog, get this game.
If you enjoy platformers, get this game.
If you enjoy both, REALLY get this game.
If you don't enjoy either, still consider getting this game.
For the record, I enjoy both.

I have a ton of fun playing Freedom Planet. In fact, I was going to speedrun it until real life got in the way. The game has perfect controls and mechanics in general, at least in my opinion. There are lots and lots of movement options. In fact, each of the moves that the game gives you can be used in several different ways that the average player probably would not have considered in order to gain more speed, gain more height, or do more damage. There are currently three characters to choose from, and they do not all share the same pool of stages, meaning that the game has a great amount of replayability. On top of that, you can go and try to improve your times for each individual stage, if you're into that sort of thing.

If I HAD to find a negative, it's probably that the game can drop your input on extremely rare situations. However, I have experienced this with practically every other platformer that I've played (Super Meat Boy, classic Mario games, etc.), so at this point I basically consider it a standard flaw of the platformer genre in general. It's really not a big deal at all, though, and it hardly ever happens. Heck, I didn't even notice it once on my initial playthrough of the game.

So yeah, I would definitely consider Freedom Planet as one of the hidden gems of indie games, and I would highly recommend it to anyone, even if you're not necessarily big into the genre. Hyped for Freedom Planet 2 also.

It's probably one of the best games of its genre. I must add, though, that your experience will be much better if you play with friends. It does get kinda repetitive at times but that's kind of inevitable with a game like this. I haven't looked into the level editor or community-made levels at all, but I would imagine that it adds a whole new layer of variety to the game.

I would highly recommend Hammerwatch IF you're a fan of the genre and/or if you have friends to play it with.

This game has replayability just gushing out of its ears. Which is good for a game of this genre, I suppose. But honestly, I would consider this game a must-have for roguelike fans. If you've played Spelunky and enjoyed it, then I can't see you not enjoying Vagante. And maybe the best part is that it's still early access, and the developers are still regularly updating it!

But yeah, there's always a reason to keep playing Vagante, and if you enjoy the genre then you'll surely get your money's worth out of this game.

A very enjoyable platformer. It's got just enough content to remain interesting over longer playing sessions, and the achievements and unlockables create a sense of "just one more run." The level editor is also a very nice addition to the game. Definitely recommended, especially if you're a sucker for a good platformer!

It's surprisingly not at all boring for an ASCII game. I played it quite a bit before it came out on Steam, and I couldn't resist grabbing it once it came here. Fun, hilarious, keeps you wondering what's gonna happen next. Lots of replayability too. Get it you potato

It's been over 12 years since I originally reviewed this game, and I've played this game a lot more since then. Still, to this day, this game is a serious contender for my all-time favorite, so I figured I owe it to the game to write a more thoughtful review of it.

Here is a write-up of my feelings about the game (using the same tier-based system that the game uses for boss fights, because why not). At the end of this review, I’ve included a link to a Pastebin that includes my responses to some points I have seen people make in other reviews I’ve read.

- Replayability: S Tier. I started my review with this because, if I had to pick 1 thing the game does the best, I think I would pick this. The game has 4 VASTLY different/unique characters to play as. On top of that, each character has probably a dozen distinct, yet totally valid ways you can play them. I could write an entire book about all the different ways you can play each character due to the variety of stats, skills, weapons, armor, accessories, magic abilities, and so on. Plus, the game has an Arena Mode in addition to the normal story mode. So, yeah, you would probably need to play through the game like 50 times before you really experienced all the different possible playstyles. On top of all that, there are optional bosses, optional areas to explore, and even certain hidden “side quests” that change the trajectory of the storyline later depending on whether you do them.
- Platforming Gameplay: S Tier. I have seen some people complain about the controls, and I have to just roll my eyes every time I read that, because I really just don’t understand it. I got comfortable with the movement/platforming controls after several hours of playing, and I find them delightful.
- Combat Gameplay: S Tier. This is absolutely one of the areas where the game shines the most. You do need to get extremely good at optimizing your combat mechanics if you want to S Tier bosses on high difficulties, but for the sake of simply completing the game on Normal difficulty, you really don’t need to be very good at it. There is just so much variety in this aspect of the game. I love it.
- Exploration Gameplay: S Tier. Again, I feel the game really shines with how it encourages you to explore. There will be many times where you need to re-explore previous areas of the game. I feel the game handles these situations perfectly. When you re-explore old areas, you find all kinds of new items, enemies, bosses, areas, and other surprises that you couldn’t access before. I find it very fulfilling. The ONLY caveat I’ll say here is that it can be unclear at times what you need to do to progress the main storyline. Based on other reviews, this seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it kind of thing. I personally love it, because I’d rather have the fulfillment of discovering how to progress after exploring and figuring things out on my own. But this is just something to be aware of.
- Boss/Enemy Design: S Tier. This game features a wide variety of unique enemies, and 20-something unique bosses. For me, there is only 1 boss in the entire game that I’m not a huge fan of (Treu). Otherwise, I find them all captivating, and I find it very fulfilling to start out asking “Can I even beat this boss?”, and a while later, finally achieving the S Rank on them. I also appreciate that the 3 most difficult bosses are optional ones. If you end up being overpowered for the required bosses (which can happen if you are an experienced player), then you can take a stab at those more difficult, optional bosses.
- Storyline: S Tier. This game features a really deep, captivating fantasy storyline, if you’re into that kind of thing. I would really encourage you to try to follow along with the story at least once. That said, it is quick and easy to skip if you want to.
- Game Design & Progression: S Tier. I really feel like the game’s difficulty increases appropriately throughout the game. Depending on how you play the game and how you develop your character, it is possible to be extremely overpowered or extremely underpowered by the end of the game. The game does not hold your hand with this. Again, this seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it design choice. I personally love it. The more times you play through the game, the more you learn about how to optimally play and develop your character. The game does not tell you what’s optimal – you need to learn it. Along these lines, there are also certain actions you need to do at certain points throughout the game, or else you will face negative consequences later on. You could think of these things as little side quests. Do you NEED to do them to beat the game? No. Will you lose opportunities later on if you don’t do them? Yes. Again, the game doesn’t really tell you about these things, so you might love it or hate it. I love it, as I feel it improves the replayability of the game.
- Graphics/Visuals: S Tier. This game has a distinct art style. It is not trying to be the most amazingly stunning or realistic game you’ve ever seen. It is sort of a mix of hand-drawn and pixelated art styles. I personally think it works really well. I find it immersive.
- Music: S TIER!!! Zack Parrish does an immaculate job of mixing in the game’s trademark melody into a very wide variety of different emotional presentations. The sound track is honestly one of my favorite elements of the game overall. It is so immersive. Over the years, I have found myself listening to it outside the game from time to time. Bravo, Zack Parrish.
- Performance: C Tier. I would be remiss not to mention the performance issues I have experienced with this game over the years and on multiple machines. Because I love the game so much, I am able to look past these. I want to emphasize that these issues have absolutely NOT been frequent. But they have happened on a number of occasions over the years. On both my old machine and my current machine, the game sometimes stutters very briefly in a select few areas of the game. One of these areas is Hrukk and the Lower Central Skyway. I think it may have to do with a bunch of water/waterfalls being on-screen at once, though I’m not totally sure. On my old machine (with sub-par hardware), the game would lag if lots of projectiles or lasers were on-screen at once. This has not been an issue on my current machine. However, on my current machine, the game has crashed a handful of times. The crashes are not frequent, and they have not happened during any important events in the game, but they have happened nonetheless. These performance issues are by far my biggest complaint with Valdis Story. They have been a little annoying at times, but I want to emphasize that they have NOT detracted from my overall experience or opinion of the game.

Okay, over the years I have also read a lot of other peoples’ reviews of this game. Some of these reviews have been negative. Lots of these negative reviews include critiques that I personally thoroughly disagree with. Here is a Pastebin that includes my thoughts, since I’ve run out of room in this Steam review: https://pastebin.com/afgn3EQd

Thanks!

Not really my type of game, but if you like FPS's and zombies, then I would highly recommend this game for you.
It's a really well put together game, and seems like it could be very enjoyable to others, it's just not my thing.
