It's only been a week since launch and the queue problem is largely solved. One of the biggest servers got through today without a single queue popping.

I caved to the great reviews (and boredom) and figured I could do worse for $25.

Having played through all the content, I can safely say this game is over-hyped and suffers from some serious issues that will spoil the experience for many people:

1) Multiplayer is busted. You cannot just 'jump' into games, you'll be stuck as an observer - and when the next level does start you'll be way under-geared. So the solution is to join games that haven't started yet, right? Too bad! The game allows you to filter out games in progress, but that filter is broken so it just shows all the games available regardless of progress. You can try to work around it by looking at the level preview images but those are quickly outdated and unreliable. Even if you do find a game, lag is a serious concern and you cannot see the host's ping so... good luck. Beyond those glaring issues, you need to decide what difficulty and artifacts you want to play with - this splits up the playerbase significantly and its only going to get worse over time, even during prime-time there might not be any games available that fit your preferences.

2) Multiplayer is poorly designed. Your greatest enemy in this PvE coop shooter isn't the enemy AI, its your teammates. Whether your playing with chests or the artifact of sacrifice (enemies drop loot instead of chests), your first goal when playing with others is to split up and avoid each other, anyone who sticks together will end up competing for loot while other players who just race around the map will get significantly more loot and leave you undergeared. The only time the game encourages you to group up is for the boss of each stage which is a brief window of ability spam that represents the 5% of the game where you actually play like a team compared to the 95% where you're just trying to race each other around the map for chests/drops. Nothing leaves a bad taste in your mouth like hunkering down to fight an elite spawn just to realize that while you did so (often alone) every other chest on the map was looted, often with the gold you earned from taking down the elites.

3) Character progression and balance are atrocious, even by the lenient standards of the roguelike genre. Currently most games resort to using the "Artifact of Command" which takes most of the RNG out of the loot system. It basically amounts to developer-endorsed cheat codes that turn even the hardest difficulty into a joke, and yet the loot system is so weak that it feels necessary if you ever want to have a good run on harder difficulties. Without the artifact, the game gives you scant choice on how your character will progress and most items are borderline useless compared to the best stuff for a given tier of item. With the artifact, you have fun for a few games as you pick the best items for each tier, but even then these items, while "OP" aren't that well designed beyond the initial "WEW I HIT LIKE A TRUCK NOW" effect. The best legendaries render your character, loadout, and play style almost meaningless - basically wiping the entire level with proc effects from the moment you start even on the highest difficulty.

Worse yet, some of the best items are locked behind a persistent currency system that every message board for this game will just tell you to cheat by editing your save file because nobody wants to grind lunar coins for their preferred build. Yet if you try to play "straight" without the Command Artifact or Infinite Lunar Coins, you're basically playing a slow-motion slot machine where you'll spend half an hour praying for the right items to drop (spoiler: there's a <5% chance they will) before the enemy scaling overwhelms you regardless of your skill.

If I could do it all over again, I would have waited for a sale (or further updates to fix some of these issues) before playing. At a bare minimum, multiplayer should feel like a co-op experience and not getting stressed because Space-Genji is looting the entire map while you're pinned down in a tunnel trying to survive with a quarter of his items.

The gold standard for co-op PvE combat. The loot system gives you a reason to play for hundreds of hours and the combat/quest system let's you play that long without it feeling like a slog.
