Note: This was written fairly recently after the release of the game. Some of the issues I had may have been addressed in newer updates to the game.

The game takes inspiration from a lot of other games, combining their genres into this interesting experience. It takes the Survival Crafting aspects of Ark Survival, adds the Open-World Exploration aspects of Breath of the Wild, and incorporates the Creature Catching of Pokemon all into one, each of which complimenting the other. The designs of the Pals are quite nice, haven't really seen one that seems out of place of the setting. It's a fun gameplay loop, as is a chaotic experience that I was hoping for. However, that doesn't mean it isn't without flaws.

The game slows down quite considerably as you progress throughout the game. The amount of items that require technology points to unlock quickly outpaces the amount of technology points you gain, leaving you needing to grind out levels just to unlock all the components you need for the next base upgrade. Character strength seems to get outpaced by difficult areas quickly, as it seems no matter what your level is, wild Pals can easily take you out if you're not careful. There's also a number of quality of life things that seem to be missing, requiring you to do repetitive or tedious tasks to complete. For example, to upgrade your structure's from wood to stone, you have to deconstruct all the wood structures and replace them with stone. That's practically rebuilding your base, which takes a lot of time to accomplish. There's also a number of stability & save data bugs, but the game is still in Early Access so that's to be expected.

In all, Palworld is a enjoyable blend of various different genres that build off each other and provides a fun feedback loop that continuously rewards the player in interacting with its systems. It has some balancing and quality of life flaws, but is an impressive Early Access game that's relatively affordable for the amount of content you have access to. Definitely a game that I'll come back to at some point. If you're a fan of Survival Crafting games, this might be a nice twist on the genre that you'd find enjoyable.

It's very much a gameplay-focused kind of game, where it's perfectly acceptable to pick up and play a couple rounds every so often. The gameplay loop is very fun of dropping in, kill bugs, spread democracy, and get out. It is a live-service game, but how Arrowhead is handling it is a welcoming change from other live-service games out there. There's not a rush to complete the "battlepass" or anything, just the method in which you unlock new weapons and gear is through a battlepass system. Each of the passes are sticking around, and the premium currency needed to unlock them can be obtained from just playing the game.

To me, it's been really fun to play with friends that I don't have many games in common with, and the chaos that can ensure from a mission can lead to some memorable moments. It wouldn't be a game I would play on my own, though I hear the public matchmaking is fairly good. Though nothing is better than dropping a cluster bomb payload at a hoard of bugs and watch your buddy run in head first shouting "For Democracy!".

This game is best experienced without knowing much about it, so if you've liked games like Undertale or OneShot, it's almost certain you'll like this one too.

It really REALLY delivers on the story and worldbuilding. Each character feels fully fleshed out, making me laugh and feel connected to them as the game went on. I'd say it's more akin to an interactive visual novel, where there's gameplay elements to keep you engaged, but the emergent stories that come out of it are due to your own exploring, not where the author decides to take you. This game is littered with small details in every nook and cranny, all of which connects the world and party to one another, and it's beautiful. I can't recommend this game enough. I understand it may not be for everyone, but if this is a genre of games that you've enjoyed, then this one will make a lasting impression on you as it has for me.

Garden Story is a really cozy game that is a nice palette cleanser from more dense games of the genre. There's not too much difficulty to the game, and there's nothing forcing you to process the story at any point. You can probably rush to the end of the game in a single sitting, but it's enjoyable to take things slower, growing the villages and collecting resources to aid in your adventure. The game doesn't innovate on much of what the genre has to offer, but it succeeds in what it strives to be and it's fun, what's more to ask? I could see it as a good entry-point game for newer players to the RPG genre. For myself, it was bite-sized enough to not be a major time-commitment, yet fun enough for me to see the game through to the end.

Animal Well is a unique game that combines aspects of various different genres to create something special. This game takes the metroidvania style but uses it as a base for the main focus of secret-hunting, similar to FEZ. The game just throws you into it, as the player awakens from their pod and is set to venture into the different biomes of the well. As they explore, they find various different tools to use, different animals living within the well, and many, many secrets to find.

I enjoyed my playthrough of the game thoroughly, as I loved the organic nature of learning the mechanics of the game. I'd get a new tool, mess with it a bit to understand it on the surface, and then use it in a new way accidentally hours later. While that may not be nice for some people, it fits the vision of this game perfectly. As a puzzle game, I also really appreciated the different "layers" of the well. It makes the game more accessible to people who aren't as keen on the puzzle-solving aspect, allowing them to choose how deep into the well they want to go. The spritework done for the game is very pleasing to look at, really giving off the proper vibes that each area of the well is trying to present, especially when working in tandem with the lighting engine. Overall, Animal Well is a great game, and if you enjoy solving puzzles with some light platforming, you'll probably enjoy it as well!
