To be fair, you have to be a very dedicated enthusiast to appreciate the Mazda Miata. The acceleration is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of weight reduction physics most of the fun will go over a typical driver's head. which is deftly woven into its characterisation- its driving mechanics draw heavily from British sports cars of the 1960s, for instance. The enthusiasts understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of its driving feel, to realise that it's not just fun - it says something deep about AUTOMOTIVE HISTORY. As a consequence people who dislike the Miata truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Mr. Regular's existential catchphrase “Headlights go up, headlights go down”, which itself is a cryptic reference to the aerodynamic philosophy of the 1990s car industry.
