Colour me surprised!

I went into this with a lot of skepticism, since I played the OG RE4 for the first time not too long ago (2020) and it holds up so well even among other modern games that when this got announced I felt like there was absolutely no reason for it to get a remake. For 2 and 3 I get it, these games show their age and wouldn’t get ruined by a slick modern upgrade. Resident Evil 4 is very different in this regard. Taking off the edges to make it a more modern product ruins some of the personality that that game had, Resident Evil 4 IS its edges. The stupid one liners and character interactions, the nonsensical plot, level progression and overall unrealistic silly magical realism of the world the game presents makes it more than just an influential (older) masterwork. It’s still elevated, it’s still better than most games like it.

With that being the mindset that I had going into this, after giving it a couple of hours something clicked. Whatever crack capcom managed to put into the original one, it’s also in here. It plays like an absolute dream and like with the original one after finishing I wanted to start over immediately. It is SO addicting for some reason, I couldn’t put it down. I was waiting to be done with work so I could get back to playing this, which is a rare thing with modern titles for me. And let it be clear, this is a modern title. It is different from the original one in so many ways.

Some things I like more in this version:
-Ashley as a character
-Luis as a character(!)
-More incentivized to comb every corner of the map (Loved the exploration here)

However, as expected, there are also some things that I miss from the original.

The remake has WAY less straight up comedy in comparison to the original. Don’t be mistaken, there’s some funny dialogue in here and it’s still super campy but it’s less hokey and clumsy. Salazar especially feels like a downgrade. A big fun part of the original was the villains phoning in and spouting random ♥♥♥♥ at you, which they’ve taken out for some reason or another. A lot of the quotes people still pull up from that game were in these moments. It dials back some of the dumb craziness in favour of being a bit more serious/darker, which is sad.

Merchant is still great, Leon still has some good dialogue and it’s the best resident evil has felt so far gameplay wise. If you’ve never played the original, I’d say do so and then come back to play this. I mean it, I know a lot of people say this about remakes or whatever but both of these games are amazing and you’re missing out either way.
The original has a bit more personality going for it but the RE4make still manages to be one of the best Resident Evil games. It somehow did the impossible by proving its right to exist. (It was good enough that it made me want to give the silent hill 2 remake a chance, on the offhand that it might also be as good of a take on an older game that did not need a remake at all)

Huge recommendation, really excited for RE9 since I trust Capcom enough to make something good. Ever since RE7 (My personal favourite) it’s been mostly great, with some hiccups here and there. Don’t ♥♥♥♥ it up now!

Dishonored 2 has two moments of absolute genius level design that make it a worthwhile sequel to one of my personal favourite games.

The thick atmosphere is not as present as the first one and the story is overall very meh (not that the first one had a great story, but the world it was building up was great). But damn, Clockwork Mansion and Aramis Stilton's Manor are two highlights of the entire series. Very intricately designed with a lot to chew on. The idea of being able to slip in and out of the bounds of a modular moving building is great and Aramis Stilton’s Manor playing with two different timelines at the same time to get through the level is crazy cool (not even mentioning the two EXTRA paths the future can take here depending on what you do with Stilton). It’s really impossible to do these two levels justice verbally. The rest of the missions are quite good too, with maybe The Grand Palace being the only kind of disappointing one to me.
The moment to moment gameplay itself is as satisfying as the original one I’d say, exploring every nook and cranny and trying to figure out how to pass by undetected makes it immediately very immersive. The traversal in these games is unlike anything else.

A thing this game does different from the first one is that the world is a bit more welcoming. In the first one everyone wants to either kill you or report you to the national guard, where here there are moments of downtime with actual NPC’s that don’t mind you being there. Makes the world feel a bit more lived in, which I appreciate. Also thanks to our main character now talking, which is sparse enough as to not be annoying.

Still, it’s a bit less engaging than its predecessor, which mostly lies in the writing. Moment to moment dialogue feels like wordfodder and the whalepunk crowley-esque dark magic mystique feels less exciting somehow, even with the big focus on Delilah as a villain. Who also kinda sucks as a character. The supernatural takes a bit more of a forefront and in turn it becomes a bit less unique because of it. It was one of the cooler parts of the first Dishonored but it worked as well as it did because of it being a subtle lingering tint rather than the main focus. Your enemies were people. Just so happened that there was also black magic.

A bit less grimy, somewhat unfocused and less absorbing than the original one, I still very much recommend playing this one. Celebrate level design as good as this. Too bad we’ll probably never get another one.

Managed to somehow avoid spoilers for this game for a good 18 years (I remember being younger and being scared ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of an ad in a game magazine), it's still really good. Makes you realise how many big singleplayer games have ♥♥♥♥♥♥ writing. That being said the last 5-10% of this game kinda blow. First 90% is so good that it doesn't totally ruin it though. Definitely not flawless but absolutely one of the better written and realised game worlds out there.
