Age of Empires, Civilization or any other strategy games are getting too simplistic? Want something to truly test your abilities? Europa Universalis IV is the real deal - it is a really complex and in-depth grand-strategy. It is a trial-and-error game with an absurdly high learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, it is extremely fun and enjoyable to play. The multiplayer is absolutely fantastic too. Paradox went a little too far with the expansions and DLCs (most of which are not even necessary), at first I suggest buying the base game and the "Art of War" expansion.
Europa Universalis III was great, but Europa Universalis IV is amazing. A must-have for anyone who calls himself a strategy fan.

Really interesting, a lot of mod support, relatively cheap. Definitely worth a shot.
