After nearly 400 hours and this being my most played game as well as being fairly involved in the community for a while, I think I have a fair amount of experience for my recommendation.
First thing to note is that there are 2 versions of the game at the moment: the older "Legacy" version that will no longer be updated, and the newer "evrima" version that is currently being updated and worked on. I'll be reviewing them separately since they are pretty different and everyone has very different opinions on them. I'll also talk about the community and the devs.

Legacy
The Isle's gameplay loop is essentially this in legacy - pick a dinosaur, probably a carnivore, and then follow on of 3 paths: find a meal then AFK for a couple hours and repeat till fully grown, find and egg and do that + protection and friends, or die (most likely option). After fully grown, you find a pack or herd, and then fight or raise babies. I've found the latter to be more interesting for a couple reasons but fighting can be fun too. The Isle in both versions is INCREDIBLY hit or miss. The miss is when you spend hours and die before being fully grown or dying right away, both of which are very common, and the hit is when you find a group of people and migrate or raise eggs or have a really sick fight. These bits of gameplay are genuinely fun and make for a lot of good memories, but they hardly stand out among the HOURS of wasted time.
People praise The Isle's graphics for a reason, they are stunning. It is a beautiful game. However, night looks pretty terrible because of the god awful night vision, and the foliage is pretty limited.
Legacy feels incredibly unbalanced but apparently it's far better than past iterations so it gets a 6. There are a handful of dinosaurs that you simply cannot play because they are so bad. Because it's so engaging, combat is something that matters a lot and there are a lot of dinosaurs that just can't fight. Or run. Or hide. The game is mostly dominated by the "apex" class, Triceratops, Giganotosaurus, and Tyrannosaurus. These 3 are in a different league than the rest of the other options by default, but other dinosaurs have their place. Most of combat is actually decided by turn radius though, which is essentially how tight and how fast a dinosaur turns. There's a thing called "tail-riding" or "ass-riding" where one player sits on the other's tail and bites repeatedly, the other person unable to do anything. Oh and, legacy combat is restricted to LMB. There is no collision. Legacy combat is exciting because there are high stakes (hours of your free-time), not because it's actually fun. I'm sure many people will disagree in this aspect, but consider it.

Evrima

I'm glad to say that evrima gameplay is far better than legacy, in my opinion anyways. This is because combat is more interesting with multiple moves per animal and turning no longer allowing mind-boggingly stupid matchups to be possible. All animals are equally viable, so far anyways. Also the new "diet system" makes herbivore diet significantly more interesting, though still not equatable to carnivores. The incredible amount of time necessary to have fun, the necessity over finding a group, and the lack of nesting still draw away from it. The visuals are not as good, but still above most other games. Night vision is much better and the foliage makes the world really feel alive. I would say that evrima will be a product worth buying in a couple months or years. It needs some work before it becomes a game worth money, though even then it's only barely a recommendation.

Development & Staff Team, and Community
People often say to remove the art from the artist, but in this case it doesn't apply because in order to experience the art, you need to fork over your hard earned cash to the artists. And the artists here, they are not worth that. The development and staff team are incredibly disrespectful and rude, because there are people who will support them no matter what. The most appalling case of this happened a couple months ago, and single-handedly forced myself and thousands of others from playing the game. It turns out the head of the staff team, Paradym, was involved in illegal activities with a minor that shall go unnamed but not unaddressed. Despite knowledge of this, he was given near total control over thousands of people, many of which are minors. When people first discovered the allegations and evidence, the dev and staff team intentionally attempted to cover up the information. After press got involved he was kicked off, but mention of it is prohibited to this day. A YouTuber by the name of Pesky had a fun little argument with the developers which wound up showcasing their utter lack of professionalism and grace when they insulted him and his views publicly and restricted him in the game. These are 2 of dozens of cases just like these that have and will inevitably continue to happen. If the game itself sounds appealing enough, I hope this will sway you, even a little.
