Lets make this review simple.

This game is 3D vampire survivors.

For a little extra details, graphics are simple - minecraft like. The maps are randomly generated, this can be annoying. There is also a boss spawn at the end of a run that you must activate by finding the portal on the map. This can be slightly annoying.

It's a lot of fun though, sufficiently different from VS to let me play both, sufficiently close to it to keep the fun parts. Well worth the small cost!

There isn't much to this game but it's cheaper than a pint of beer in most bars.

I'll review as if people reading have no clue what this is: an uninteractive "game" - consider it more of a brief exploration with pretty graphics. You can move around, WASD, and sprint, Shift/RMB. That's it. The rest of this involves you looking at the same room over and over to identify if there is a difference to the state of the room you saw the first time. If there is a difference, you return the way you came, if there is no difference you proceed forward. There are a number of cycles of this and at the end you get credits/a checklist of differences you've encountered. That's it. That's the game.

That said, some of the differences are surprises. Some shocking, some references to other things and some just hilarious/fantastic. The Ethel/Maxwell OIIA is not just great fun but also an awesome showcase of changing the visuals. For that one scene alone this was worth the price of the game.

I have managed one successful run so far and failed probably 15 times. No idea what I failed on, some of the changes are tiny others glare in your face so it's a decent quick memory challenge. The result is I've currently seen 10 of 40 possible changes, looking forward to seeing them all!

I have played a lot of NFS games. My introduction to them was buying NFSU new when I was a kid. This is bad, but it's so close to being good. It has the bones of NFSU2 but it just leaves you wanting NFSU2. It looks good, the cars look and sound okay though other NFS games have much better engine sounds but man. The cars handle like sewage. All the vehicles feel fat and heavy. No matter how I tune them or what settings I put on them, they just feel bloated. Worse, it feels almost like at high speed something occasionally tries to maintain slight steering corrections often into walls. Maybe it's my PC, maybe it's a hidden setting I'm not doing - the drift stability definitely makes it worse. It just kinda feels like there's a broken autoaim style assist turned on that won't go away.

On sale it's okay I guess. You can't skip a lot of the cutscenes which is frustrating. The rep system is weird. Aside from that, the map and roads are decent, there are plenty of events and collectibles aren't obnoxiously hidden - they're nicely accessible. If only the vehicle handling didn't feel awful.

Also, nitrous is unfathomably disappointing. You don't get the sense of speed increase, you barely notice. IDK how they messed this up so bad.

I have played a lot of NFS games. I think I started with NFSU, at least, that was the first I recall playing.

This isn't the worst NFS game I've played but compared to both Rivals (though now Rivals online is shut off, it's a shell of a game) and HEAT, this game really doesn't hold well.

The graphics aren't as shiny as Rivals, despite Rivals being considerably older. Rivals does have the 30fps limit, but it looks far better. Heat is also substantially nicer than this. This game, well, the graphics kinda make all the cars look like plastic toys. It has a huge open world which is probably why, resources went to that instead, but I'm sure they could have polished the cars a little better.

In terms of how it plays, it's an arcade racer. I would say it's on the easy side in terms of challenge. The bad part is the car tuning is incredibly basic, you just kinda select upgrade cards. It's... okay I guess, but if you're a little nerdy about tweaking cars this system is just awful.

They also included a lot of world map collectibles. Unfortunately this is very unrewarding and some of them are quite difficult to get to, which can be frustrating, but not as frustrating as the vehicle class system.

There are multiple race types and you designate a car on getting it to what race type you want. The drift cars are more tail happy, the race cars less so and poor off road, the off road cars slower but handle dirt better etc. Mostly this is... okay, except they occasionally force you to use one of these types for something else. This wouldn't be an issue except for the drag cars. The drag cars are very grippy and turn like a boat in quicksand, forcing players to then race effectively a street circuit in drag cars is just abject misery. It is a HORRIBLE game choice, completely unfun and really frustrating. I can't forgive them for that.

If you buy this on sale it'll keep you entertained for a while. There is a lot more content than in rivals etc but, honestly, it's very similar to nfs heat but heat is the better game in every way.

Update: I have left my original review at the bottom of this. I felt that now I've packed in a lot more playtime, it was worth giving an update. I still cannot recommend this game in good conscience, but I want to say it has the making of a fantastic game. Now to cover my criticism in detail:

The driving itself gets quite boring. There isn't a significant difference in feel between each different car and the "tracks" are extremely uninspiring. In effect, the race track is a series of highway loops set in Tokyo. I cannot speak for the accuracy of these, but it means there's highly limited differences in road types/conditions. The cars all feel very much like reskinned tweaks of everything else. Sure some are faster and grip better, but they lack character and unique points. The races themselves are mostly determined from the get go. AI tends to be bad at corners, so effectively it is down to if your car can keep up with the AI until you meet a corner that the AI can't cope with. If your car is more powerful, you win anyway. It does not feel skill based particularly, and this is down to the limitations of the tracks.

The opponents do have slightly different driving styles, but really, this has little impact to how races play out. It is slightly disappointing that some opponents cannot be raced again while others are permanently available. This could be addressed by vehicle classes limiting what other opponents are on the circuit.

I love the way you challenge opponents - drive up behind and flash your lights, This is a satisfying way to engage without any stress. I also love that some races have more opponents during or immediately after, a little surprise.

I absolutely hate the monetary systems. You have credits to pay for your cars and upgrades, but you are limited in how many credits you can hold in your bank. You then have points which unlock perks. These perks range from making races last longer, making credits easier to earn, enlarging your credit bank, unlocking cars, unlocking mods etc. I just find that earning a type of in game currency to spend on unlocking something to buy with a different in game currency is just extra steps for no good reason. I also find that at present, earning credits is too slow unless you farm certain opponents, which feels very grindy.

I also want to say the car selection is a little small. A choice selection of the famous Japanese manufacturers/models but that is somewhat limiting when weird cars have been forgone. I am a Japanese car enthusiast and would LOVE to have seen Nissan Cedrics and Laurels, but these are markedly absent, as are classic cars - I believe the AE86 is the oldest in game car, no original celicas, surprisingly no MR2s and if memory serves, Honda is absent entirely so no NSX or S2000.

I want to make it clear, despite my issues, I love the game. I love cars, I like the arcadey street race style and open world aspect. There is a glimmer of NFSU2 in this game and I am sorely missing that, nothing since scratched the itch. This could do it, but it needs tweaking and more content. If I were to make one major critique, it would be the actual tracks. There just needs to be more road, some tight circuits, some stuff designed for different driving styles like drifting. I note there is an inaccessible airport - why not make that into a drift circuit minigame for drifting only with small challenges? I would also like to see more solo in game challenges; perhaps at the stopoff zones (Parking Areas) have the option to race to the next Parking Area and get rewards scaling based on speed? One big big big change that needs to be implemented is it needs to be easier to change highway direction. At present this can only be done in SOME parking areas, not all. Really, you need to be able to somehow turn around far more frequently/easily.

All in all, I want to love this game. It's like looking at a glimmer of a pearl in the sea, it's there but it needs to be dug out.

OG review:
This game is difficult for me to review. I want to love it. It's so close to being fantastic. I'll try to give the good points and bad.

I haven't played this game much, around 5 or 6 hours at time of writing. Unfortunately, in that time, I've had the opportunity to unlock (not buy) perhaps 10 cars. I have bought 2 and tuned those to the maximum I could for my level. This I guess is the fundamental issue. This is a very grindey race game. There are two currencies in game, one buys cars and upgrades for those cars, the other buys perks and access to upgrades and cars. This serves as a cap to prevent you becoming overpowered early, but it is extremely frustrating as simultaneously you must defeat bosses to allow the unlocking of the upgrades/cars to then allow the purchase of them. Worse is that your bank has a limit to the credit capacity which has to be unlocked with perks, prior to that if you cap your bank balance out, additional earnings are wasted.

Cars are very very expensive considering the earning. It takes a lot of racing to earn enough. This brings about the second issue. To describe the track, it's a set of effectively highways based in Tokyo. When you start your driving, you pick a highway entry point, but this locks you into one direction. There are no areas you can turn around on the highway. To start races, you follow cars and flash your headlights. You can race any NPC car, but regular NPCs earn little, motor group/gang cars need to be beaten and earn a bit more then bosses earn the most. This can be especially frustrating. You have a sort of limit to the time you spend each highway run, imposed by tyre degradation. I actually like this mechanic. In addition, defeating certain bosses will end your highway run immediately. This can be slightly annoying.

The 2 cars I have in game do not feel particularly different. Think how GTA IV cars all felt more or less the same, just with slightly modified physics and speeds, that feels quite similar to how cars are in this game. A little disappointing.

The races themselves are simple. You both have a kind of HP bar and once one car is too far behind the other, the HP bar drains. Hitting walls or other cars also drains HP. Unfortunately, this can be boring as a result of the highway track. It is mostly straight lines. You can wallrun sometimes. Defeating opponents mostly comes down to is your car faster or can you draft for long enough. The AI is pretty bad at sharper turns so these will usually give you an edge. That said, if you are against a significantly faster opponent and in an area with pure straights, you'll have to race them until the track incorporates turns. Occasionally the AI makes mistakes and hits traffic, but this is rare if you are behind.

There is an extra, incredibly frustrating part of the game as well. While so much of the game is locked behind ingame earning which means grinding the same relatively simple track and same race style over and over, opponents are also locked. This would seem obvious, but when you deliberately travel to a car on the map that has a boss icon only to get behind them and be told that race is locked, it is extremely annoying, especially combined with the inability to turn around and go onto the opposite direction lanes to hunt another opponent. The outcome of this is having to end your highway run and spawn in again, by which time the location of your opponents will have moved.

The game does run extremely smoothly though and looks decent on a not especially powerful GPU. The cars look nice, there is some customisation available, the interface is a little clunky but it is functional. I just really wish there was a little more to it than grinding what feels like the same race over and over.

I got this game a long long time ago and sadly it is discontinued and will be sacrificed to the realm of abandonware.

None the less, I wanted to leave a review here. It's a tongue in cheek entertaining game. The mechanics take some getting used to and feel a little clunky, walking around definitely has issues occasionally catching against invisible walls which then... no longer exist. The lack of scroll wheel use to select power is also irritating. None the less, once you figure out that regular enemies are colour coded to your attack and bosses have a gimmick, for instance, the first boss requires you to fire your LMB attack while stationary through a placed box, it works well, though I would have preferred a mild stealth aspect and not have the effective HP trading system.

There is underlying commentary. Some feels dated today but some is even more relevant than ever. This game is definitely one that some would find... offensive and the fact it was even made seems like a big risk from the dev.

I was given this free, but I wish I had paid for it as I support the effort fully.

I'm adding to the already huge number of reviews here and I doubt I'm adding anything new to what has been said.

This game is addictive. It is very simple. It is fun. It is challenging. That doesn't mean it's for everyone.

There are a number of characters to select all with their own stats and starting weapon. As you play you can level up the weapon and stats each game, but these level ups are non persistent. The objective is not to die for, on most maps, 30 minutes. Weapons, once fully levelled and if you also picked the correct stat boosting item, can be evolved and become more powerful. Some evolutions are more complex to reach than others, some even have multiple weapon or stat boost item requirements.

In addition you earn gold each session. Gold purchases persistent boosts that make the game easier, or harder if you enable certain ones.

Each stage ends with a "reaper" ending your run. This can be defeated to unlock a more powerful reaper that kills you anyway but there is very specific criteria to achieving this.

The game is 2d. You have only movement control, all weapons are automated. Enemies get more powerful and numerous throughout each run. It has a solid soundtrack and the art, while pixel art, is great with many unique enemies.

For the price and how much entertainment is in the game, I cannot recommend it more. I hope they bring an online coop in future!

I can't describe this game very well other than saying it's a fun but incredibly frustrating challenge. It feels like the worse you are doing, the harder the game gets and it is determined to throw more obstacles that ruin a run in your way as you do worse.

That said, it's brilliant. There are tons of unique little things thrown in for entertainment and so many weird challenges that you have to explore to find. It is also really surprising to see how different perks and even weapons can enable little things to go better.

I'm no expert but I do like the game a lot, I haven't explored a lot of the modes yet either.

Also it works great on steamdeck.

In over 30 years of life I've achieved education, jobs and cars.

In under 30 hours of stardew valley, I have a profitable, productive farm, a wife, friends, kids on the way and have learned to fish, mine, craft, cook and slay monsters.

I'm living the life I always wanted in pixels now. 100% recommended.

tl;dr I love this game. If you like puzzles/exploration (think portal, some parts of HL/HL2) or if you want a game with a meow button, this is the one for you.

Calling it cat simulator is accurate but doesn't do the game justice. I would put this in a similar vein as portal as the game is about solving puzzles, but also includes exploration and a lot of interaction.

As much as I love this game, it is not perfect and I will cover the issues first.
I encountered a glitch when receiving an item that needed activating - the item would not activate whether I used the control pad or mouse. The fix was to reload the chapter, however, this reset my inventory to nothing and also removed my progress on collecting music notes. Memories for the drone were retained.
There are some bugs with enemies getting trapped in walls or in weird areas where they do not seem to be able to chase you from.
There are some small lighting glitches and graphical bugs, mostly these aren't noticeable but particularly evident for me has been lava lamps glitching and lighting around the cats ears.
Tiny complaint: I would also prefer more opportunities to knock things over with a button rather than walking into them. It is VERY satisfying to cause chaos.

Aside from this, so far my experience has been fantastic. I rarely manage to pay attention to games and keep playing them, the meow button alone has me wanting to continue. I don't know where the story is going but it has me hooked as well.
