~~~Update 2, 7/12/20~~~
A couple months later, and fifty more hours in. The game continues to be a worthwhile experience. I admit, I took a break for a week or so, but ended up coming back to the game soon enough. Purchased the artbook- definitely recommended; the concept art alone is worth it- and have, perhaps, finally become moderately good at the game! ...maybe.
That aside, there isn't too much to add. I like the rather natural ways the cast is connected, including people you wouldn't expect. The characters continues to be fun and likable, and Sion is still the best. The developers continue to add new quests, side quests, mastery sets, and more. Even achievements, making my mission to collect them all more difficult, which is great in its own way.
I've recommended this game to multiple friends of mine, and I'd gladly do the same toward any fan of XCOM and turn-based strategy games. Speaking of, I tried getting into XCOM proper, but it just increased my desire to play Troubleshooter instead. This game is quite addicting.
Even after a hundred hours, I'm not finished with the (currently released) story. I admit, it's a slow burn in some ways, but you can practically feel various threads building and linking together. There are quite a few mysteries I really look forward to learning more about. What happened ten years ago, what certain characters are really planning, who will really end up being friend and foe, and more.
I'll declare it officially. This is the best game I've played this year, and my favorite. It will likely become one of those games I go back and play again and again throughout my life.
~~~Update 1, 5/20/20~~~
I could tell from just a few hours in that this game was worth my time and interest. Fifty hours later, I can add that its probably going to be among my favorite, and most played, games this year. I haven't remotely lost interest, and I find myself with the urge to challenge myself and get all the achievements, with time. Even though, normally, I ignore that sort of thing.

I also still want to see more of basically every character; so far everyone is interesting and likable. Even the random gang members have conversations amongst themselves that make me feel a little bad about beating them all up. A little. Not to mention characters like Na'am and Jason, or a certain spider-y thingy I've encountered in a few side quests, come across as recognizable and likable, despite just being mooks at the end of the day.

Also, can I mention how great the music and art are? At no point has the game let up on either, constantly supplying more amazing scenes that tend to be quite fun to examine, and see how many characters I can spot hidden in the backgrounds and such.

I like how even the characters that could come across as one-note or comic relief show their depth on regular occasion.

Irene isn't just a Hero of Justice; she has her own fears and anxieties, wondering if she's even doing the right thing or if she's merely making things worse.

Sion isn't merely a slacker who likes to complain a lot; he works as hard as anyone, without demanding praise or even notice, and most of his advice comes from wanting to help his boss and friends when they're not taking enough care of themselves.

Anne isn't just supportive and chipper; she's carrying a lot of weight, alongside a feeling that she isn't good enough, all the while showcasing the horror of war and violence through a child's eyes.

Even Albus, who one might assume to be a self-insert standin for the player, very much has his own drive and ambitions, throwing himself into danger with reckless abandon to the point where he'd probably get along with Shirou Emiya.

Looking forward to updating my review again, after another fifty hours. Developers, keep up the good work, and make sure you're taking care of yourselves! I may not be the most active member of the community here, as I'm trying my best to avoid any spoilers, but I can tell you've got something special here. In retrospect, given the sheer amount of content available already, the price I paid for this wasn't nearly high enough.

Finally, I'll add that Sion is the best ever, and I find myself agreeing with him on stuff more often than not. Always remember those famous words: "We really need to get off this street."

~~~Original Review~~~
So far, it's a fun game. I can see the depth to the various systems, even if I don't have the hang of everything quite yet. The cast seems charming, and I look forward to seeing more of everyone. I could see myself playing this for quite a while; and this is all coming from someone who never could get into XCOM.
I first discovered Sunrider through a gaming news site, during the middle of the Kickstarter. I followed it for a while, eventually downloading the demo. Though nowhere near as refined as it currently is, the combat and the story drew me in, and made me want more. It wasn't a hard decision to back it, in the end, and I haven't regretted it since.
Each of the characters have tropes and cliches making up their general personalities, However, that's not all there is to them. They each have life and depth, which, in my opinion, makes it worth fighting through even the toughest battle, just to see what happens with each of them next.
And believe me, the battles will be tough. Love in Space designed Sunrider to be a very difficult game, in which you always feel as if you're just about to be overwhelmed. I think they have succeeded at this, as I certainly never feel completely at ease during battle.
Still, there are different difficulty levels, if it's too much for you. I don't mind admiting that I switch to Easy on occasion, myself. However, if you're one of those people that finds "nearly being overwhelmed constantly" too easy, there's always the Hard difficulty, which is sure to blow you out of the proverbial water. There's also Visual Novel difficulty, which is good for testing out strategies, or just speeding through the game, if you simply can't wait to get back to the story.
The plot itself is interesting, though if you're a big fan of the genre, you've likely seen the basic idea before. Still, having seen Love in Space's past works, and some of the bigger twists in Sunrider, I can safely say that, by the end, you'll be shocked at where this story goes.
If you're not sure about Visual Novels, Strategy RPGs, or both, I'd like to remind you that the game is free, and not going anywhere. You can try it out at any time, for no cost, so just think it over for a while. If you ever get bored and have nothing better to do, Sunrider might be the right thing to pass the time. And who knows; you might just end up liking it.
