Came for the Metroidvania/Sekiro description.

Stayed for the beautiful art style, jaw-droppingly good animation, and incredibly well-written story.

Died to literally every boss a thousand times why can hE TELEPORT LIKE THAT-

11/10 would mistime my healing pipe again.

Look, I have 8,272 hours in this game as of this review. This means one of two things:

1) This game is incredibly fun and you should play it.
2) This game is addictive and will devour your soul.

//EXTREMELY MINOR SPOILERS BELOW, LEARNED IN THE FIRST FIVE MINUTES//

I have never played a game like this before.

When you play a good game, you often feel as if your screen is a window to another world, where the events of the game actually take place. In OneShot, this happens LITERALLY. The character you play is from another world, yes, but neither your world OR the game world. You guide him through the world as an observer from beyond, a guardian spirit helping him to save the world.

Because elements from that world communicate with you in YOUR world. Files on YOUR computer give you the knowledge you need to guide this child. The immersion that this creates, along with several other mechanics, is absolutely staggering.

OneShot is both a game and an experience because of this. One of the most poignant memories I have is running through the first area of the game and suddenly releasing the "run" key because I was worried the character would get exhausted. THAT is how immersed I was in this game. THAT is how much you begin to care for the protagonist.

And the ending... the last twist of the game is one that you WILL see coming a mile away, but it is still one that you will sit at for a long, long while. I have never in my life wanted more to just reach into a game and hug the main character.

I don't care that this is an RPG-Maker game. I don't care that there is no combat or epic fight scenes or any of that. I don't even care that this game is a remake. As far as I'm concerned, this game is a modern-day Alice in Wonderland.

OneShot is an experience that will linger with me for a long time. And I'm happy that it will.

TL;DR
Buy this game and hop on the feels train, we're going for a wonderful ride.

I want to hug the cat child so bad.

EDIT AS OF 3/27/2017

This morning as of midnight, the dev released a long-awaited "content patch" based on the "Solstice" theme the game has been hinting at.

Ho mah jeebus christ.

Buy this game.

BUY THIS GAME.

BUY IT NOW.

THE FEELS TRAIN HAS NO BRAKES.

AND IT IS GLORIOUS.

This is the only game I have ever played where I will intentionally buy all the DLC.

I...

I have no words. There are no words to describe the masterpiece that is this game. Whether you're going down the surprisingly dark path that is the genocide run or embracing the pacifistic path, this is a game that will grab you by the heart and soul. Never once before have I actually cared about the NPC's in a game. Never once before have I gone down the evil road in a morally split game and actually, legitimately given up - not because of difficulty, but because I just felt so bad.

And never, EVER before have I thought "I am willing to petition to ADD DLC to a game just to save one more character." To those who have seen the true ending to this game... you know who I'm talking about.

In an industry that is becoming more and more obsessed with war and violence, where murder is justified and revenge glorified, Undertale is a sharp, emotional, and unbelievably immersive contrast. For the first time in years, I have gone through a game and come out of it having learned something - not in an academic sense, but in a personal sense. So many games have tried to do this, to help the player develop as a person alongside the character, but this is the first time I have ever seen such a goal fully realized.

Undertale isn't just a story about a land of monsters, it's about humans as well - showing that human nature and violence are not one in the same and that, given enough hope, effort, and determination, it is indeed possible to achieve peace. It is not an easy road, and often not even a road that some agree with, but it is still possible.

If you are looking for a fun and engaging game, buy Undertale. If you are looking for an incredibly emotional experience, buy Undertale. If you are looking for a story that will be not only memorable but inspirational, buy Undertale. If you have never, ever once played a video game and want to start off with the best possible experience to ever grace your screen, buy Undertale.

You may end up regretting HOW you play the game, but you will NEVER regret playing it.

So. I first bought The Long Dark during the 2014 Christmas Sale way back when because I saw a video from a YouTuber saying it was good and had far, far too much money to waste. (which was all wasted in that very same sale. DAMN YOU GABEN.)

On March 8th, 2015, I finally decided to make my first attempt at playing this game. I had been binging on a number of other games recently and finally decided "Eh, I'll see what this whole thingamabobber is about."

Now, I was essentially going into this thinking "indie survival simulator" and getting terrible flashbacks of all the BAD attempts at the same genre that the indie community (and even the professional community) have made in recent years. Yes, the screenshots looked pretty and stylized, but I wasn't about to judge a game by graphics alone; if I did, then most entries of Call of Duty would suddenly jump above everything else from the very bottom of my list.

I was going into this expecting to laugh my ass off at a poor attempt at gameplay and quality and tension in general.

I was so, so, SO wrong.

This game. This. F***ing game. This game is AMAZING.

My first sandbox playthrough lasted about a day and a half, at which point I had run out of resources, was stuck in the middle of a blizzard with no firewood or starters, and was freezing my ass off. I decided to go quietly, laid down my bedroll, went to sleep, and never woke up.

In that moment, I felt a part of my soul die with my character.

This is not a game to be laughed at. This is not a game where you play it and look for all the bugs and errors to make fun of. This is a game that, within the first half-hour, will have you so incredibly and undeniably hooked that you care about your character in such a way that the game over screen reads like a gravestone of a close friend.

Three pieces of advice for new players:

First, expect a challenge. Even on the lowest difficulty where the wolves DON'T attack you, this game is punishing for your mistakes. As stated above, my first playthrough lasted about a single in-game day because I failed to account for resources properly. My second playthrough has lasted about five days, but I still don't see myself living past fifteen. This is not a game to mess around with: make EVERY MINUTE COUNT. Otherwise, you won't last very long at all.

Second, expect to be surpised and stunned by the visuals. This is not a game that has ULTRA-REALISTIC 3D where EVERY SNOWFLAKE IS RENDERED AND DRAWN DOWN TO THE ATOMIC LEVEL. No, this is a low-poly, low-res-texture game, even on ultra graphics settings. And yet, despite ALL of that, the style alone makes up for it. During my first playthrough, one of the very first things I did was climb the tallest mountain I could reach. I made it up there at sunset and... well, I just stood there. I broke my very own rule of making the time count, because I was so shocked at how GORGEOUS this game can be. In my second playthrough, with even more time to explore, I have had my mind blown over and over and over again as this game delivers stunning view after stunning view. Despite not having AAA ultra-complex graphics, I can easily say that TLD is more beautiful than any AAA game on the market.

Third, expect to become attached to your character. Seriously, you WILL come to care about your character. And THIS is why I truly love this game so much. In my ENTIRE GAMING CAREER, there are less than five games to EVER make me shed a tear. But when my first playthrough ended and my character passed away in his sleep, I did indeed shed a tear. I shed MANY. This game forges such a strong emotional bond between player and protagonist that I simply can't praise it enough. You have to play it and EXPERIENCE it to understand.

So play it. For the love of every god I can think of and/or name, fictional or otherwise, PLAY THIS GAME. In an industry filled with parody games and vanilla, generic copies of old classics, The Long Dark delivers such an original, strong, and emotional presence that it simply cannot be ignored. So, to Hinterland Studio Inc., I applaud you for creating an experience unlike anything else I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy.

You will not be wasting your time playing a poorly-concieved indie game here; you, as a living being, DESERVE this game. Do not deny yourself this experience. Enjoy The Long Dark in all its frozen glory.

Now, with that said, I'm going to go back inside my fishing hut and eat some more delicious rainbow trout.
