Tl;dr: Game is fun, but needs a lot of work. It's still a grindy sandboxy Korean MMO, so stay away if you don't like that. Better gearing and progression systems than other Korean MMOs. Cheap but gated p2w (think Warframe) which seems to have wrecked some servers.

I came into the game actively not trying to like it. I've played a fair bit of most big MMOs, including Korean ones, and I was not expecting much.

First things first, this is a Korean MMO first and foremost, and if you don't like grindy Korean game design, then you won't like this game. That being said, the game is fun:

+ Many of the Korean MMO systems such as gear progression are far, FAR better than in BDO and Lost Ark. This alone makes me like this more than either of them.
+ *After fiddling with settings a lot* combat feels nice (not as good as GW2 which would be the closest example), and the blocking within action combat is a fresh addition.
- The stock combat settings are stupid.
- As an Asian game, the game has pay to win to a certain extent. It's important to note, though, that it's capped. When comparing to Lost Ark, it's cheaper but more capped, so you'll see more p2w guilds on some servers, but they won't be as stompy as in Lost Ark. Warframe would be the closest example in terms of pw2.
- Moving while fighting with a crossbow is clunky as hell and should be fixed.
½ As most MMOs on launch, the game is lacking in content, and part of what's there is weirdly gated. If you're on the edge, come back later to see what's going on.

I'll keep this short. It's an indie early access game.
If you like RTS games, there's not very many good ones to come by.
The game is fun and has some nice innovations. If you want to support indie devs with a passion for RTS games, get the game.

Tl;dr:
+ The global meta-resources/XP system is interesting and adds a some depth to teching builds and reacting to your opponent (such as culture, exploration XP, industry XP etc.)
+ The game has a few features missing from relevant competitors, such as vassalage.
- Non-existent tutorialisation and encyclopedia while having several complex, convoluted systems.
- Several UI flaws that make managing said systems a bigger chore than it should be.
- Technical errors and multiplayer not working.

I will most likely update this review after a patch or two, but here goes. My experience with Millennia started with having to manually edit .json files to get the game even running. If you're having problems, you need to go into the game's launcher folder, then edit launcher-settings.json so that you can change FormatVersion's value to 1. Now that that's out of the way:

The game has several interesting additions to the genre, but at the same time lacks almost all tutorialization while having a plethora of new features. To add to that, the in-game encyclopedia doesn't have a search function (which it desperately needs), making it very tedious to get into the game's complex systems. This alone made the game a tough sell for me.

The game would have probably been better with its resource management system being a bit more streamlined, either mechanically or through proper UI/UX desing. Having to build chains of separate improvements through a series of selections and menus feels clunky, and the barebones tutorial window shown about it shows a different version of UI, making its instructions not even match the game.

All in all I like the game's take on a few things, such as it's vision of technological advance in several different fields, having global resources to be spent on different "abilities", and having vassalage on release which Civ VI still doesn't have. At the same time, there's a clear lack of polish, and this game will definitely need more work to keep traction. It has some potential for sure, and a bit more dynamicness to it when compared to many other historical civlike 4X, but so did Humankind, and we saw how that ended up being a disaster.

This game gripped me like no ARPG has after Diablo II. Gameplay is smooth, character teching is great, and you can clearly see the devs passion. At the same time, it's far smoother to get into than PoE so I'll definitely be playing and waiting for new seasons.

Ignore the MT pilots, the game is awesome and definitely the king of 2023.
It's smooth, engaging and challenging. The tutorial might be hard for beginners, but that's part of what makes me love the game so much. Can't wait for more!
