Mountain Chickens (Leptodactylus fallax) are a critically endangered frog species native to the Caribbean islands. The large frogs are native specifically to the forests on the islands of Montserrat and Dominica where they are prey for hunters due their legs supposedly tasting like chicken, hence the name. Hunting the large amphibians is prohibited since 2003, yet it never fully ceased as the frog's meat is part of a popular national dish. The continuous hunting along with an epidemic of invasive fungal disease now puts the species on the brink of extinction with only a few wild specimens left on the island of Dominica. Extensive breeding programmes aimed at long term recovery of the species have been started at multiple sites around the world, all united under the banner of the Mountain Chicken Recovery Programme.
