There's some kind of freemium-esque system where if you die in a dungeon you lose all the loot, exp, skill points, etc. you earned up to that point, and re-playing the dungeon doesn't guarantee the same loot will drop. You could go through a dungeon for 30 minutes, earn a flaming longsword and 3 levels, and then trip over a beetle and lose all of it instantly. There's no way to improve if you can't flawless complete each dungeon with no error whatsoever. Basically, to get good you have to be good already.
