There is no need for saving in this game. Its a rogue-like; a single run is all you have.

Each mission is about 10-15 minutes to complete, even solo. Larger ones take about 20-30. With 8 missions, that puts you around 2 hours, which is a moderate gaming session amongst people who don't have a lot of time in their day to do so but still want to enjoy themselves.

The core gameplay consists of you (and your team, if you have one) entering a map, gathering resources and complete the objective before going to extract. In between missions, you craft resources and upgrade your character to adequately prepare for the upcoming onslaught. Right now, there isn't any meta-gameplay mechanic currently implemented that demands a saving mechanic, which is what games like Hades and Astral Ascent include. Outbreak is more survival-oriented, making you think more about the actions you want to take and the risk associated in doing so, similar to survival games in the genre, where you risk dropping all your loot before venturing forth.

One point I will acquiese, is for multiplayer. I do think it would be somewhat unfair if a friend were to leave, then join the same lobby, they are completely reset, leaving them at a disadvantage for the rest of session. My proposal is just to have the session unique to the lobby, so people who want to continue playing that same lobby still have the same stats. Other than that, even if you needed to leave, you could just put your computer to sleep and the lobby will continue to exist, alongside other people who haven't clicked out of the game.
