Wehrmacht is marching into the Soviet Union. It's 1941 and one of the largest military campaigns in the history of warfare is about to begin. Company of Heroes 2, makes no qualms about how desperate and costly the conflict on the Eastern Front was for both sides.

Fourteen large missions make up the Company of Heroes 2's campaign mode. They follow Lieutenant Lev Abramovich Isakovich, a Soviet Officer who now resides in a Siberian gulag. Presented as flashbacks, this tried and true method of storytelling follows Isakovich and his superior, as they discuss the war and the Lieutenant's disgust at the atrocities committed by his comrades.

The campaign is pretty massive and it begins with Operation Barbarossa in 1941 and ends in the conquest of Berlin. Missions are varied presenting new challenges along the way & each mission also has two or three phases, which are added as older ones are completed. This really adds to the gameplay and makes the game that much better.

Big boys toys are vast and varied throughout the game too. You will find both mechanical and human to enjoy. There are, what almost feels like, limitless tanks, artillery, jeeps and soldiers to play with. Many of which can be upgraded with new abilities or, in the case of the soldiers, scavenge new weapons left scattered on the battlefield.

The games physics and graphics give the game a more realistic feel too. Smoke from explosions will block a sniper's field of view, walls are smashed down by indomitable tanks, artillery bombardments dent the ground with craters which can be used by infantry for cover and buildings are consumed by raging fires; as flamethrower-wielding engineers attempt to barbeque hiding foes.

One thing I really like in Company of Heroes 2 is, the weather component. It gives the players one more thing to manage during missions, but yet never seems to be overbearing on the mission at hand. Thanks to the changing weather, it does make for some fun additional challenge and does not seem to get tiresome.

You should also be careful not to leave troops out of cover, or they might find themselves freezing to death. Body temperature represented by a small, blue meter & when it turns into a tiny skull, they will stop and eventually collapse, never to fight again. Units can also walk or drive over frozen rivers, but be wary, the ice can also be their end. Ice can crack from heavy vehicles (Ever seen Ice Road Truckers) sending soldiers to a very cold and very wet grave. It is also a tactic that can and should be exploited by you but remember, AI forces will use this tactic too.

Playing through the campaign wasn't as challenging as expected either. It was a compelling and story-driven campaign, but still not as challenging as I had anticipated in my mind. Some possible reasons for this could be that despite the contrary, troops are almost a "throwaway" item, enemies make poor use of the environment and ambushes are fairly rare also. Perhaps a patch down the road will bring better campaign AI, for now though, the enemy AI seems a little "dense" at times.

That said, other gameplay options are available:

The "Theatre of War" mode is a series of one-off missions that are noticeably harder than the campaign. Some are single player, some are co-op, some are AI skirmishes.

"Victory Point" and "Annihilation" Multiplayer Modes. Here is where the fun happens. Both MP modes have thirteen maps available to them and both are very different from each other. Victory Point is effectively a "Domination" style mode where players gun to to hold key points and the side with the least amount of points slowly loses points until their total reaches zero. At which point the other team wins.

"Annihilation" mode is a deathmatch scenario. Unfortunately, it does somewhat, lack imagination however I still found it to be fun. Playing Multiplayer requires tact and planning. Human enemies certainly offer a much harder game (in most cases anyway) which means using all of your skills is now more paramount than ever.

coh2 02Company of Heroes 2 kind of gives off the feeling that perhaps it is just one massive expansion pack for the original, in saying that, it is probably not a bad thing. The foundation from the original game can still be felt in this sequel, but a reinvention it is not. In the world of RTS, I must say that this is certainly one of the strongest games I have played in a while, even with it's few shortcomings. New players will find the ease of the campaign an excellent introduction to the franchise and the returning veterans should find plenty to like about the addition of hostile weather and the expanded multiplayer component.

If you liked the original Company of Heroes, you will surely like Company of Heros 2. RTS fans in general will enjoy this game. Like I said, apart from a few shortfalls, this is still one of the best RTS games I have gotten my hands on for a long time.
