A good chunk of gameplay for what turned out to be just over 6 hours. What's here is very solid and tightly made. The part of the game finished currently is very dense with very little wasted space. I played on normal and found it to be quite easy near the end. I would recommend a hard play through as a first time. It also has quite a bit of branching with its skill cards system acting as "levels" of sorts so there is dialogue and paths to miss out on depending on what you've speced in (for example, I was never able to interact with occult totems).

Writing wise, it is fine. I like how no one info dumps at the player with their couple lines per choice being layered and saying as much as possible in few words. I have some gripes with the historicity of the our (ostensibly) normal main character and his partner talk like more like they're from the early 1800s to late 1700s instead of 1920s America. There are plenty of little anachronisms throughout with them, however many of the weirder characters get a pass as they supposed to be "aeons" old, but the modern people feel very much out of place for how they talk.

The narrative of the game has barely been made, but I thought the beginning to be a little stiffing, however it quickly opens up to let you spread your wings and explore the town of Kingsport. So far in the story, it's been meeting and being used by powerful characters, hopefully that unfolds deeper as more is added.

One gripe is the lack of enemy variety and their stupidity. Their being stupid is not the biggest deal, but you quickly see all the enemies in this short time. I do wish to see the ghoul enemy to be expanded on and improved as it is an otherwise very bland design with not much Lovecraftian about it.

Hollowbody is a frustrating game of threatening to do something interesting. With exception of some of its level design, it almost never does so. If you're expecting hand crafted interesting rooms to explore with some weird thing to give you some sense of dread for daring to explore and find it like the og Silent Hills, you'll get only part of that. The rest of the time, you get long, drawn out practically straight line recreations of a modern British town with some scifi nubbins and cars and black biomass dotted around. Otherwise, average British town circa now.

Hollowbody also frustratingly does not much at all with its scifi setting, with the exception of how the main character gets to where they are and one puzzle that tangentially uses the ID system for corpses, it could be changed to modern day setting and nothing in the story would change. The notes, which there are plenty, do almost all the heavy lifting of conveying this takes place somewhere in the future as the story and gameplay certainly doesn't.

The writing itself is boring and says all it says in the first couple lines of a scene and then just keeps saying more. Over the course of the game, there are several phone calls with an entity that, for some reason, the main character keeps indulging until nearly the end of the game. The content of these calls is also to just watch as the main character gets goaded by simple childish mocking almost over and over about "what they did" or a phone call calling her a murderer over and over to pad the time. Additionally, the writer either doesn't know what a direct address comma is or hates the idea of them, as every time someone calls out a name (this happens often), it is never given a comma before or after.

The notes are the highlight and are realistically written with the right kind of fluff that gives a better understanding of the world at the time and conveys that these notes had a purpose for people in the world, not just the player. There are some badly written notes, a newspaper article stands out as if it was written by a middle schooler, and some posters of nothing that's not apparent are used to unnecessarily pad out the notes too.

However, Hollowbody does have some flashes of greatness and understanding of the horror in Silent Hill. An instance of exploring two houses in the British streets is a particularly fun sequence with an extremely well done jump scare. And the sewer level greatly pulls the rug out from under your feet with what it throws at you after collecting the "keys". But again, these highlights are in the middle of long drawn out running around straight line streets that offer zero interesting things to observe or find other than the same 5 classified corpses. There's crashed cars. wow. Biomass. cool. Anything else? nope. So if you do play, just do yourself a favor bee line it to the main objective.

Gameplay is also clunky, but passable as it's fairly easy. You shoot the gun, you swing the stick. Hit the thing, stomp the thing down. Not much to it. There's one boss fight that introduces a new mechanic, and that's over in like a minute. I do wish the puzzles got more difficult, but actually get easier as the game progresses. The one exception is the sewer level where the level is the puzzle. If only the entire game were like that.

Very fun already for being in early access. Literally took Half-Life (you're not Freeman though), SCP, Dark Souls, and blended it with light survival mechanics. I think there's problems with balance of the challenges and some obtuseness to unclear communication of what to do to progress at points; some things were misnamed, such as fiber optics cables being required at a point and how to make silver slag.

Plenty of room too for the NPCs to be fleshed out as well, right now they give you a hint of what to do and then you never see them again with the exception of one or two right now. Otherwise zero reaction to how you're progressing and what you've done.

There's also some annoying things that you can't do even though it makes total sense to do. Like having a bottle full of water, but not being able to pour it into a pot to fill it up, but this may be fixed soon.

Currently, the game has an end point where you cannot progress further. But that didn't come for me until 24 hours in. I'm very excited for more to come and to see how the game gets improved.

Nice and condensed. It is a bit short for full price, but the story is nicely layered with background happenings only being picked up on after playing again. The interactions you get with both characters with the rest of the cast are entirely different from each other, even though they do end up at (mostly) the same places. The setting with the mystery and large quantity of notes are all spectacular and creating one of the best well realized central locations.

The greatest downside is the combat. The enemies are very generic. You are not getting the highly detailed zombies of RE2, but the game knows this and combat encounters are very brief and also easy. And of course the end boss fight, which is very by the numbers.

Gunplay is excellent, at least, and definitely makes VATS a last resort instead of the main crutch to get through combat but begins to wane when that's all that's holding up Fallout 4. Everything else around the FO4 is passable to terrible when compared to previous Fallouts. The focus on voicing the main character really limits a lot of the dialogue engagements and hampers the role playing when having to guess what you're actually saying with the pick 4 one word descriptor choices. The removal of skills also makes filling a role entirely impossible for the new perk only SPECIAL system. Exploring is still fun though, but thanks to quite literally every location being populated with enemies (really about 90%), it makes exploring more of a chore than before.

The game really shines with some of its locations, and its DLCs, Far Harbor and Nuka World, is some of the best when Bethesda has a smaller focus on its projects. However, Fallout 4 is definitely not something I'd want to replay any time soon. The story is very lackluster compared to previous titles, with little depth in the choice of who to side against with very clear and blunt reasons that anyone who isn't a psychopath or a fascist would want to side with certain factions.

Is this game good? Yes, Fallout 4 is a good game. Is Fallout 4 a good Fallout game? 100% no.

If you play this game, play it with mods that remove most of the gripes, like I'm sure you're already planning on doing.

Hands down, one of, if not my single favorite game of all time. This game has it flaws, but everything else is just so perfect everywhere else that it doesn't matter. This game is more than the sum of its parts and then some for me.

Looking at this review from 2 years ago, I feel like I severly understated this game. It's hard to put across how a game can actually change your life, but I feel like I wouldn't be where I am today with how New Vegas got me into modding and game design because of how great it is.

If you like RPGs that you can just dive into, this game will be that for you. If you just want to explore, this game will be that for you. If you like making a game your own through the sheer amount of mods their our, this game is for you. There's not much you can't do in New Vegas, and its always more than worth it when it routinley goes on sale for five dollaridoos.
